Here is a brief bio on Naomi: I currently serve as the Sanctuary Operations Coordinator for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Program. I work out of the Sanctuary's Oahu Office, located in the Hawaii Kai. I have been with the Sanctuary Program since March 1994. My responsibilities include providing information about the Hawaii Sanctuary to the public to help raise awareness on the importance of protecting humpback whales and their habitat in waters around Hawaii. I work closely with educators, scientists, and other government agencies to develop programs that enhance protection for Hawaii's marine resources. These programs address education, research and conservation issues.

Humpback Whales that migrate from Anarctica to Mexico are part of the South Pacific Population. Researchers do not believe that these two populations intermingle with each other.

Aloha Justin, In the U.S. humpback whales are protected and it is illegal to hunt them within 200 nautical miles of the U.S. Worldwide, it is also illegal to hunt humpback whales because they are an endangered species. Although, illegal pirate whaling may still take place on the high seas where it is difficult to enforce international treaties.

Aloha Amanda, Malieri, Justin, All of you have asked why humpback whales and gray whales migrate such long distances. All baleen whales, whales that have baleen instead of teeth migrate long distances between their feeding areas and breeding areas. Humpbacks migrate distances of 3000 miles between Alaska (where they feed) and Hawaii (where they breed). One of the reasons for this, is that in areas where these animals feed there are lots of marine organisms in these waters for them to eat. In areas like Hawaii, there isn't enough food for the whales to eat because our waters our nutrient poor.

How do whales sleep. Good question. As far as we know humpback whales do not sleep like we do. All cetaceans (whales and dolphins) are voluntary breathers, meaning that they must tell themselves to take a breath of air when they need to. If whales and dolphins slept like we did then they could not tell themselves to take a breath of air. Researchers believe that whales and dolphins take short periods of rest throughout the day and sleep a half a brain at a time.

Heather, Matt, Wesley, Humpback whales have been known to migrate from Hawaii to Alaska in as little as 4 weeks. A baby whale is born at approximatley 13 feet and by the time they are weaned (10 months) can be as much as 24 feet in length. Grey whales are approximately, 40 feet in length. Humpback whales average 45 feet in length. Humpback whales visit Hawaii to breed in the winter months. It is believed that one of the reasons they come to Hawaii is take advantage of the warm water.

Most of my experience with dolphins has been very positive, they are very loving animals. There were days that I would have a dolphin that would seem to be in a bad mood and would behave badly during training. I saw some aggression between the individuals in the tank, normally this aggression was due to establishing dominance. Female dolphins are very good caregivers and I have not heard of a mother dolphin injuring her young.
