Expedition Log Entry #1 : The Chumash in the mountains behind Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura – and out on the Channel Islands – are world famous for their rock art. What kind did they usually do ? Petroglyph or pictograph ? This is a well known example called Painted Cave that is now a carefully protected State Monument.

Where is this image found ? button Notice the different ways these suns are shown as compared to the other Coso and Chumash suns you have seen. Hello Truman Middle school students - her is an important Dig hint : remember to include the Log # you are answering - and write a complete sentence .... when you just write " this was chipped into the rock." the reader does not know what you are referring to. Joey - we see you are discovering how to read ancient natural history in the rock art. Here is a challenge - if there was rock art on the Channel Islands from 10,000 years ago, it might show what animal that we have looked at in the Camp that is now extinct ( hint - they swam across to the islands / you have been sent a wooden kit of one in your Cmap expedition kit )

Joey - the mammoths on the islands 10,000 years ago were indeed wooly - and - they were rare pygmies too ! If we had lived then, I think we might have painted rock art of those local animals ... just like the Coso area people painted the shhep they saw ...

Entry # 13: The pictures are probably less than 1,000 years old. Paints were mostly made from minerals. They were binded with water, animal fat, or plant juices. The celesterial body was a solar eclipse.

Linda is right about #8 - a pictograph that is painted would soon be ruined by the sun, wind and rain if painted out in the open air - that is why it is almost always petroglyphs - CARVED - images that we find under the open sky. They are able to last the longest ..... some of these might be at least several thousand years old ...

When early California Indian children became teenagers, they often underwent an initiation rite to enter into their teen years and to prepare to become adults. Some of the petroglyphs were for young women at this time in their life ... others are thought to have been for young men. Tell us this : if you went out camping as an initation rite - what images do you think you might paint or carve on the rock ? And lets NOT consider grafitti rock art please ;)
