Welcome to Camp Internet’s Rock Art Dig for young explorers. We will be looking at Rock Art from several areas of California, asking you to discover answers to questions about the rock art, and we invite you to post your answers back here in the Dig Expedition Log.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:14PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Read each question, then see the image, or click on the word BUTTON and you will be off on an exploration of web sites that hold the answers to some of California rock Art’s secrets. As a Camp Explorer, it is up to you to read the text carefully everywhere you go, study the images closely, and come back and report your best answers ( try to include the Log Entry# at the beginning of your answer, and write complete sentences). Please start each answer with the Log number of the question. Example : Log#1 answer : the Chumash usually made ‘xyabnyuipvbndh’ rock art.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:14PM PST (-0800 GMT)
You will be seeing two basic rock art types : Pictographs – paintings on the rock, and Petroglyphs – images carved into the rock.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:15PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #1 : The Chumash in the mountains behind Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura – and out on the Channel Islands – are world famous for their rock art. What kind did they usually do ? Petroglyph or pictograph ?
This is a well known example called Painted Cave that is now a carefully protected State Monument.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:16PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #2 : This next site to see is on a private ranch, and the Camp Directors visited it regularly a few years ago when their office was on the ranch.
What do you think the images meant ?
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:16PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #3 : First stop on the Camp’s Rock Art Dig is the Coso Mountains in Eastern California, near Ridgecrest. Can you find that area on a map ? This rock art you will discover by clicking here is not painted on the rock. How was it made ? Click on this
button to find the answer and come back and tell us what you have found.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:17PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #4 : When the early Californians created the rock art in the Coso Mountains – what was the landscape like 10,000 years ago ? It is now a dry, rocky desert, but what was it like then ? Click here to find out
button
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:17PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #5 : Now that you know what the landscape was like then, imagine the animals seen in these petroglyphs running free all over the land. What animals do you see in the rock art that lived there when the rock art was made ? button
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:17PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #6 : What do you think the human figures in these images are doing ?
button
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #7 : Now we are going to explore rock art pictures taken by a different photographer in the same area. What is the name of this rock art site ? Who does the photographer who took these pictures think these human images were ?
button
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #8 : What type of rock art images are these – petroglyphs or pictograph ? button
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #9 : Common images in American rock art are suns, snakes, hunters, stars, frogs and lizards. What sites have you seen so far today that have any of these images ? Use the buttons in the questions above to go back and see which of these images we have seen so far. Are there similar images in all backcountry rock art sites, whether near the coast or behind the Sierras ?
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #10 : So far we have visited different sites where the image of the sun has been seen. Here is another image of the sun to study. Where is this image found ? button Notice the different ways these suns are shown as compared to the other Coso and Chumash suns you have seen. Can you try to draw these suns yourself ? but then again, they might actually be stars at night – what do you think they are ?
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #11 : This photographer has visited many rock art sites. Let’s look at his work, and his suggestions for what they might have meant. The comb shape shows up in many different rock art sites – it is thought to be a rain cloud. There are also pictures of humans and animals. But there is a type of rock art here we have not seen before. It is rectilinear lines in different box, grid and maze shapes. What does the photographer think these geometric images came from ? button
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #12 : Now, let’s visit our own Camp web site. These are Chumash rock art … what colors are they ? button
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:21PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Expedition Log Entry #13 : Use this button to tell us when the rock art of the Chumash was probably made, what the paint was made of, and what type of celestial observance do scientists think the rock art might show.

Rock art was created 10,000 19,000 years ago
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Truman Middle school students - her is an important Dig hint : remember to include the Log # you are answering - and write a complete sentence .... when you just write " this was chipped into the rock." the reader does not know what you are referring to. In other words - include the question in your answer.
TMS-Linda: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:34PM PST (-0800 GMT)
10,000 years ago the area around the Coso mountians were lakes.
TMS-Jeremie and Marlene: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:34PM PST (-0800 GMT)
10,000 years ago there were lakes in this area.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:35PM PST (-0800 GMT)
To : Tms/Robert - what question are your answering when you say 10,000 years ago ?
TMS Joey: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:35PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We think it was green and grassy becuause there were grazing animals.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:36PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Linda, Jeremie, and Marlene - when there were lakes there, what else was able to live there that does not live there now since it became a desert ( hint - it is what the rock art pictures show )
TMS- Nathan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:36PM PST (-0800 GMT)
10,000 years ago in the ice age.
TMS-Linda: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:37PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Entry #6: I think they are hunting.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:39PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Joey - we see you are discovering how to read ancient natural history in the rock art. Here is a challenge - if there was rock art on the Channel Islands from 10,000 years ago, it might show what animal that we have looked at in the Camp that is now extinct ( hint - they swam across to the islands / you have been sent a wooden kit of one in your Cmap expedition kit )
TMS-Jeremie and Marlene: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:39PM PST (-0800 GMT)
it was log #4 that there were lakes in the area.
TMS- Nathan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:40PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I think it's a eagle with a claw.
tms-jim: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:40PM PST (-0800 GMT)
log 14 .. the red animal is an eagle i think because it has wings....
TMS Joey: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:40PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We think the animals are a bird a frog and a human.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:41PM PST (-0800 GMT)
To : TMS-Linda: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:37PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Entry #6: I think they are hunting.
.................. Question - what makes you think they were hunting ?
TMS-nathan& george & Olivia: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:41PM PST (-0800 GMT)
It it`s an eagle with long hair.
tms-logan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
log 1-- they made mainly art that was craved in the rocks...petroglyps..
TMS-nathan& george & Olivia: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
It it`s an eagle with long hair.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
HINT : If you need to get back up to the top of the dig, type a large number in the Scroll Back box, click on chat, and you will return to an earlier part of the dig to work on those questions.
TMS-Bryan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:43PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The Chumash usually painted pictographs.
The pictures were Petroglyphs.
TMS-Linda: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:43PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Entry # 14: I think one is a bird, one is a lizard, and one is a sea otter.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Logan - for #1 - a petroglyph is a carved image, and a pictograph is a painted image ... try again to answer that one and pay attention to the picture itself to determine if it is painted or carved .....
TMS-Jeremie and Marlene: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
log #14 i we think it is a person.
tms-logan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
log 14, the drawing with the four limbs may be a bear because of the claws...
TMS-Bryan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The Chumash usually painted pictographs. The pictures were Petroglyphs. The deserts were once lakes.
TMS-nathan& george & Olivia: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I think it`s a human.
TMS Joey: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Are you referring to the Wooly Mammoth?
TMS-Bryan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:46PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Frog, bear, and a human
TMS-Linda: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:47PM PST (-0800 GMT)
To: Camp Internet Expedition Team: # 16: I think they are hunting because the people have lines around them that look like weapons.
TMS- Nathan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:48PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I think its a crocodile with its tail chopped of.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Joey - the mammoths on the islands 10,000 years ago were indeed wooly - and - they were rare pygmies too ! If we had lived then, I think we might have painted rock art of those local animals ... just like the Coso area people painted the shhep they saw ...
TMS-Jeremie and Marlene: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
log #14- we think the piture is a hawk, frog, and person.
TMS-Mary: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
They usually painted pictographs
TMS-Linda: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Entry # 12: They are red, white, brown, black and blue.
TMS-Mary: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:51PM PST (-0800 GMT)
These were carvings called Petroglyphs
TMS- Nathan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:51PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I think the little black figure is a frog with a tail to defend themselves
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:51PM PST (-0800 GMT)
To those of you working on # 14 - look at the lines on the face of the large black figure - do you see the rainbow shapes ? does that change who you think it is a picture of ?
TMS-Mary: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:51PM PST (-0800 GMT)
These desert areas were once covered with lakes.
TMS-nathan& george & Olivia: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:52PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I think it`s a human.
TMS-Mary: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:54PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I think that the animals are a frog, a human, and a bird.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:54PM PST (-0800 GMT)
TYPE the number 50 in the scroll back box now and click the chat button to get back towards the top to catch those early questions ..... PLEASE try to number your answers so we know what question you are answering - check out how Linda is posting - it helps the reader follow your discoveries ! And complete sentences too ! thanks
TMS-Mary: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 5:58PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I think that the human is going in search of food. He looks like he is sneaking up on the bird.
TMS-Jeremie and Marlene: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:00PM PST (-0800 GMT)
log #14 now i think it is a otter but marlene still thinks it is a person or bear.
TMS Joey: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:01PM PST (-0800 GMT)
#6 We think that the people are hunting. We READ that the shamans did huting magic through their paintings.
TMS Joey: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:02PM PST (-0800 GMT)
#6 We think that the people are hunting. We READ that the shamans did huting magic through their paintings.
TMS-Bryan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:03PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The pictures were taken in Petroglyph Canyon of the Shamen
TMS-Linda: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:04PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Entry # 13: The pictures are probably less than 1,000 years old. Paints were mostly made from minerals. They were binded with water, animal fat, or plant juices. The celesterial body was a solar eclipse.
tms-logan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:10PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The drawing is pictrograph!
TMS-Linda: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:11PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Entry #8: These are petroglyphs. I know this because if it were a pictograph the painting would have already worn away due to the surronding enviroment.
TMS-Mary: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:15PM PST (-0800 GMT)
# 10 These were found in San Deigo Ca. I think that they are probably stars because we only have one sun. Or maybe they are counting days?
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:17PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Linda is right about #8 - a pictograph that is painted would soon be ruined by the sun, wind and rain if painted out in the open air - that is why it is almost always petroglyphs - CARVED - images that we find under the open sky. They are able to last the longest ..... some of these might be at least several thousand years old ...
tms-jim: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
sorry we have to go to practice! Thanks for the treats and see you tomorrow Mr.DECroo.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
When early California Indian children became teenagers, they often underwent an initiation rite to enter into their teen years and to prepare to become adults. Some of the petroglyphs were for young women at this time in their life ... others are thought to have been for young men. Tell us this : if you went out camping as an initation rite - what images do you think you might paint or carve on the rock ? And lets NOT consider grafitti rock art please ;)
TMS-Mary: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:21PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The photographer thought that the geometric shapes were what they saw while in a trance state. They were called Phosphenes.
TMS Joey: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:21PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The site is Little petroglyph canyon CA. most of the human figures are shamans or medicine men.
TMS- jeremie and marlene: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)
log #14- after we read the story "Rainbow bridge" we think the black thing is a person turning into a dolphin.
TMS-Mary: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)
#12 The colors that were used are reds, blues, and some greens.
TMS-Mary: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:27PM PST (-0800 GMT)
#13 The paints were made from minerals. These are thought to be less then 1000 years old. They are thought to be of a solar eclipse.
tMs-logan: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:30PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The animal on the rock from a 1000 yrs ago could be a wooly mammoth./ My mom says I have to go. by
TMS-Linda: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:30PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Entry #10: This image can be found from a "Shaman's Cave" located on Bureau of Land Management land just outside of Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Yes I can draw the pictures. They look like stars to me.
TMS Joey: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We think it migh be stars because there are three of them. Or it could be an ancient record of astronimical observation.
Camp Internet Expedition Team: . . . . Thu, Nov 18, 6:41PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Good work Campers ! stay as long as you like this evening - and then check back later in the chat archive to see your work. Hello to your parents - and thanks to everyone for turning out tonight !
