1.Who is bouchard?
2. How long did Bouchard live?
3.Did Bouchard always hide his treasure?

We did not know pirates attacked California. Tell us about what happened.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Silvia: yes definitely. Many time they weren't really mean pirates but captain sailing with letters of marque which meant that a country was giving them permission to attack another country.
Ashley, IMS-1: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Mr.O'Doud, Here are some questions we would like to ask you.
1.Who was the first pirate?
2.Do pirates live on ships?
3.Do all pirates drink rum?
Jennifer, IMS/1: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Here are some questions our group would like to know:
1.How did Bouchard die?
2.Are all pirates mean?
3. What makes a pirate apirate
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:17AM PST (-0800 GMT)
On a rainy day in December 1818 two ships with lots of cannon (about 74) showed up in Santa Barbara Harbor. It was the pirate bouchard. He also had about 250 pirates. Santa Barbara had one cannon and about 50 soldiers to protect it.
jellyfish: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:17AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yes we do want to know which pirate attacked California.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:18AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Rum drinking is big time on all pirates ships (and regular ships too) They got a ration of grog.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:19AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bouchard died in Peru. He retired there and was killed by his servants.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:20AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bouchard joined the French Navy when he was 18. When he was your age he lived near Toulan and saw ships everyday and really wanted to be a sailor.
Starfish: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:21AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Did he die rich?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:21AM PST (-0800 GMT)
When he joined his first assignment was in the fleet with Napoleon in charge. They were off to Egypt!
Krystal & Crystal, IMS-1: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:22AM PST (-0800 GMT)
1. When did you become an expert on Bouchard?
2. Why did you want to be an expert on Bouchard?
3. How did you become an expert on Bouchard?
4. Do pirates like to kill each other?
5. Do pirates have wives?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:22AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Starfish. He did not die rich and he was mad about that!!
dolphin group Madison: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
About how many pirates are on a ship?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bouchard had a wife. I got interested in Bouchard because he is famous in Santa Barbara. And I wanted to find out all I could about him by study his history. I learned a story about California, France, and Argentina. He is a big hero in Argentina. They call him their John Paul Jones.
Lillian, IMS-1: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
1. How long have pirates been around?
2. Why do pirates look for gold?
3. How did they become pirates?
4. Can anyone be a pirate?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:25AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bouchard has two ships with him. One had 375 men on board. The smaller one had about 150.
jellyfish: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:26AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Who was the first pirate to steal near the Channel Island?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Lord Nelson of England attacked Napoleon in Egypt in a huge battle in Abukir Bay. All the French ships but four sunk. Bouchard escaped to Crete. There he sunk two english ships.
Nicole, IMS-1: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Mr. O'Doud, we have a few questions for you.
They are:
1.Would pirates kill each other if they had to?
2.What did pirates do when they weren't sailing or stealing?
3.Do pirates really care about other people?
4.Do you study privateers?
5.Do pirates have their own language?
6.Do pirates live at sea?
That is all we have, thank you!
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)
When he is sailing for France, he is not a pirate. He is a French sailor.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:28AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bouchard is the first pirate in the channel islands as far as I know.
Brown Pelicans: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Which pirate collected the most treasure?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Well...from Bouchard's point of view in California he wasn't a pirate...he would say he is a privateer. Argentina told him to go out there and attack Spain(California) and Spanish shipping.
Starfish: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:31AM PST (-0800 GMT)
What happened to all his gold? Is this a treasure hunt?
jellyfish: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:31AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Which is the richest pirate that past the Channel Island?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:31AM PST (-0800 GMT)
A privateer is somebody who has a letter from a government that says its OK to go out and attack another country's ships and towns.
Starfish: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:32AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Mr. O'Dowd, then Drake was a privateer like Bouchard?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:33AM PST (-0800 GMT)
From California's point of view he was a pirate. So you see sometimes who is a good guy and who is a bad guy depends on who is talking.
Pygmy Mommoth: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:33AM PST (-0800 GMT)
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:34AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Starfish: Yes...Bouchard was a privateer like Drake. But to Spain they were both pirates. Get it?
dolphin group Madison: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:34AM PST (-0800 GMT)
How old was the oldest pirate, and yongest?
Lillian, IMS-1: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:35AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Good morning Mr. O'Doud, Timothy, & Marcy -- My 6th graders have just completed Part Two of Treasure Island. We complete a related project each week. This week they had to try to identify all 32 parts of the schooner, Hispaniola, in order to earn their rank as quartermaster, boatswain, gunner, or seaman. We ended up with quite a few of each plus some landlubbers. Next week they will be creating personal Jolly Rogers while we read Part Three. Can you tell us anything about these flags? I have read many different explanations of their meaning and purpose.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:35AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bouchard sunk 26 ships and had three land battles. He sailed eastward all the way around the world. Nobody ever did that before. Most everyone else went westward. How about that?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:37AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bouchard learned about privateering and being a pirate in Baltimore in the good ole USA. Lots of that was happening then in Baltimore.
Mrs. Perez, IMS - 6th Grade Language Arts & Literature: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:37AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Greetings once again. I'm great at instructing my students but forgot to follow my own directions about adding the handle.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bouchard never flew the Jolly Roger. That was something that happened in the Carribbean about 75 years before his time. We love flags at the Trust here where I work.

Were there any pirets that were girls?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bouchard was really a French revolutionary who hated Kings. He went to work for Argentina because he wanted to help them in their rebellion against Spain.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yeah...there are some famous ladies that sailed the main...nothing more dangerous than a women pirate!!!

O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
You ask alot about gold. What they got was whatever was on the ships that they captured or stuff they could gather up in land battles. In Monterrey they stole alot and burned the town down.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:43AM PST (-0800 GMT)
He got no money at Ortega Ranch. Everyone had fled inland to Santa Ynez
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Three of the pirates crew got captured at Ortega Ranch
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
He got nothing in Santa Barbara because Don Jose De La Guerra faked him out on the beach.
jellyfish: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:45AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Do pirates get paid and if they do how much?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
In San Juan Capistrano the pirates only got a big wine supply which they proceeded to drink and got themselves very drunk.
Pygmy Mommoth: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
jellyfish: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)

Who did Don Jose De La Guerra faked out?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Then Bouchard sailed away...and off Peru he got captured by a bigger, tougher privateer ...the famous Lord Cochrane from England.
Brown Pelicans: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
How much gold did they get?
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:49AM PST (-0800 GMT)
De la Guerra was the defender of California. He was the commandante at the Presidio. He marched his soldiers which were few around a little hill on the beach. Bouchard couldn't count exactly how many soldiers he had. De la Guerra made him think he had a big army.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:50AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The Presidio is the Spanish fort here in Santa Barbara. We are rebuilding it. It is made out of mud bricks called adobe.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:51AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Brown Pelicans...as I said earlier...not many people in California then had any gold. Bouchard was disappointed with what booty he got.
O'Dowd/Curator at Trust: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 9:53AM PST (-0800 GMT)
So some of you are learning about ships and how they work. That sounds great. Are you reading Patrick O'Brian? His books are great.

Mr. O'Dowd - did Bouchard head to Hawaii or the Phillipenes ?
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:16AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bouchard was first in the Phillipines then sailed to Hawaii. He was sailing ever eastward
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:18AM PST (-0800 GMT)
He spent time in Hawaii tracking down some Argentine mutineers and when he captured them he flogged them and hung a few. He could get very angry. French-latin temperment
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:20AM PST (-0800 GMT)
When he was in the far east, he heard that Napoleon had been captured and sent to an island. In the China Sea he wanted to turn around and go back and liberate Napoleion. That would have been something!

I read online once - and can't find the source again - that there was a pirate who stole a Spanish treasure ship near Acapulco, then headed up towards Baja, and the last that was seen of him he disappeared around the tip of Baja and was never seen again. Have you ever heard about this ? There was some ship offering re-enactments fro tourists as I remember it ...
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:26AM PST (-0800 GMT)
He left Hawaii with a full crew. Some that he had impressed into service. Some Hawaiians joined up. He had his booty from the Eastern Asia prizes. He thought he was going to get lots of stuff in Califonnia. California and Hawaii had close trading connections
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:28AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Don't know the story of the baja pirate you are speaking of. How are you doing loading the images of all this? Why is there that strange picture at the beginning of today's chat. The fellow with the horse in the background?
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
What about George Compton - he is described as the scourge of the channel for his - probably not fit for children - barberous deeds. He was a pirate vs a privateer ?
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We want to put up the show on the Trust's Net site. Can we do that?
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
These fellows in the record are not privateers but out in out pirates. Just old-fashioned criminals
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:32AM PST (-0800 GMT)
What's important about Bouchard's arrival is that it was a fire bell in the night that sounded the end of Spanish rule in Califonria. Afterwards, everyone knew that Califonria was up for grabs.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:32AM PST (-0800 GMT)
This first picture in the chat is of the Camp Director who makes the morning introduction. The files you provided are being formatted, but apparently weren't ready to go online as yet .. hade hoped to see them to. They WILL be included in the pirate section for reading anytime though. Do you ever participate in the Bouchard re enactment that takes places in San Juan Capistrano ? you can view info on it at this button
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:33AM PST (-0800 GMT)
What is also interesting is that Bouchard arrived in Santa Barbara and said "rise up and throw off your chains" He was met by a company of Chumash vaqueros who defended Spain. The Chumash fought for De la Guerra.
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:35AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I organized a reenactment with the "Califonnia" and our soldiers at Refugio (site of Ortega Ranch) a few years ago
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:35AM PST (-0800 GMT)
In looking at the short intro we have on Brouchard, it doesn't list theexact date. What was the date of the visit to Santa Barbara ? And how did it sound a bell ? this is interesting .... how one man's ships arrival could cahnge Alta California ... our info is at button and we will modify it to follow the research you are doing ...
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:36AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Currently I am working with San Diego Maritime Museum who is mounting a Bouchard show on the "Star of India" soon.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:36AM PST (-0800 GMT)
the re enactment at Refugio - this would make a fun live rboadcast. Any plans to do it again ? Or for the march on the beach where he was outwitted ? Who was the commandante that thought that up ?
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:37AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Bell is metaphor. He arrived in harbor on December 6, 1818
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I believe there is a social dynamic that happens after Bouchard that sets up an insecurity that leads to Chumash revolt of 1824
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
the comandante is De La Guerra. We have a video of the reenactment. It includes a burning Ortega ranch. One of the images you have is a huge mural, that hangs in the Courthouse which is Bouchard burning Ortega ranch.
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
You will also find the letter of marque which prove he was a privateer and not a pirate per se. However, he had expired by the time he got to Santa Barbara.
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
When we opened our show on the pirate, we had the real judges of Santa Barbara, judge Adams come down and issue a real pardon to Bouchard. So he is now officially pardoned. This pleased the Argentine community
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:43AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I have seen the mural in the courthouse and it was the first inkling I had to the event. With Mexico in turmoil getting ready to revolt from Spain, I can see why his arrival in 1818 could have triggered awareness of there being an alternative to rule by the Spanish crown. We know that it was a papal decree that gave Spain rights to the New World - and hence the privateers came to challenge that. How did the vatican respond to these privateers ?
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
So when he was in Channel waters he was essentially a mercenary pirate ? Did his papers ever get re activated asa privateer ? Or did he sial off to retire ?
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:45AM PST (-0800 GMT)
As a proper French revolutionary, Bouchard had it in not only for Kings but also priests. He was a godless revolutionary. It's the French revolution right here in California. As you know, in the 1790's they whacked off the heads of priests and statues of saints. I doubt the Vatican was very excited about such things, if that's your question
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We would like to have the Refugio video online and will work towards that .. it looks like we can wrap up for today - thanks for the lively chat, and we will be posting it in the online archive. How would a pirate say good bye ?
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:48AM PST (-0800 GMT)
After Lord Cochrane captured him, he tried to get Argentina to liberate him. He was put in prison because he letter's date of validity had run out. He was angry no one helped him and he never returned to Argentina. Eventhough he was a citizen, had a wife, and two children
: . . . . Fri, Jan 28, 10:49AM PST (-0800 GMT)
