First ............ post a message introducing yourself when you have arrived, let us know your name, school site, grade level, and any other profile information you would like to share. ( You may or may not be the only teacher in the chat room as this is a drop-in class and the registered teachers will be arriving at different times.) Let us know if you use computers in your classroom, in a library, or in a lab with your students. Do they use the Internet over an Ethernet connection to your district ? Or does the computer dial out over a phone line ? Also, do you have a home computer to join us in the evenings ? And lastly, are your school computers have video capable ? The answers to these technical infrastructure questions will help us work with you to create a Dig that is exciting for your students, and that makes the best use of the technology you have for your classroom.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 12:09AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Second ............ if your classroom took a weather sampling today, please post their findings by going to button and log in as teacher1, password teacher2 (leave ‘server’ blank). Address your message to camp99-teachers-l@rain.org. List your school name and the title Weather Report in the subject line (ie Orange School's Weather Report). In the body of the message, type in your report. (You will find your posting on the list the next time you log in to your email account ). Then come back into the chat room here and let us know a message was sent to the list if you have a weather sampling.

Now ………… we will take you on a brand new California Artists Internet Dig as a demonstration porject. This Dig will introduce comparative reading, analysis, and reporting skills, and represents a step above the previous Internet Digs offered to students during this school year. After you have found the correct answers, and posted them back to the Dig forum ( in full sentences with the number of the question at the lead of the response ), you will be asked to select an artist or writer who will become the foundation of the Dig you create. Camp Counselors will be checking in during the posted class hours to say hello and see how you are doing - and answer questions of course ... Let’s get started !
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 12:14AM PST (-0800 GMT)

Who was the first man to haul heavy photographic equipment deep into the Yosemite? And when ? (read carefully) And what is the name of the man who FIRST became a legendary photography artist whose large collection of Backcountry work was sought around the world ? In what year did he first visit the Yosemite ? The answers are in one of these web sites … which one ?

Dig Discovery #4 – Around the Turn of the Century, California saw artists from around the world come to her cities and towns to set up art studios. These painters – men and women – became the foundation of the California Impressionist movement. Their work often captured the rugged, or rolling, California landscape, and celebrated the untouched natural environment they found in the new State. Look for the landscape by Granville Redmond. What plants are shown in this artist’s paintings ? (name at least three) What physical handicap did he overcome to become a well respected painter ?

Dig Discovery #6 – Following the early years of the Gold Rush and up to the beginning of the 1900s, writers from across the United States were also attracted to California and found in the young state a variety of human characters that they built their writing careers around. Gold Miners were common characters in their stories. Take a little time to read through these passages and tell us : who was the Luck of Roaring Camp and what writer penned this story ? What happened to the Miner’s Cat and who told the story ?

Dig Discovery #8 – After the Turn of the Century in the early 1900s, the film industry began to develop in California. First in Santa Barbara at the Flying A Studios, and then in Los Angeles in the Hollywood area. One writer in particular, who was famous for western novels about life in the wild west, became the inspiration for the western film industry. He worked on producing his own films, and his first company became the basis for a film industry giant in future years. Who was this writer ? What Channel Island did he build a home on ?

Dig Discovery #10 – Of all the art and writing you have seen today, which piece would you choose to own? When you decide, copy the URL where it is located and then when you come back to post your answer, insert the URL into your answer (make sure to include the full ‘button in front of the web site address). It will turn into the word ‘button’ once it posts, and gives us all a chance to visit your favorite work from right inside your posted answer. This is the beginning of learning to build your own Dig by embedding links inside your posted text.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 12:34AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Dig Discovery #11 – Over the next week, do a little research on the artist (painter or writer) you chose in #10. Pick an image from their painting or written work to also emphasize in your custom Internet Dig. Select a plant, a flower, a rock formation, a bird, a waterfall – what ever you think you can find good online resources about to compliment your Dig materials. Once you have selected that image to launch from, go to the search engine at www.search.com (write that down if you don’t already use it ) and start bookmarking sites that have resources about your artist and the image you selected. You will be building a library of possible Dig links. To bookmark a link, use your browser arrow key to open your Favorites drop down box, select Add to Favorites, and create a folder called Internet Dig. Then click on Yes or Save to store the link of your discovered site in your private book marks. You have several weeks to sort through these links, so provide yourself with a good handful of options about your selected artist and painted object. As you select them, read through them for possible Dig Discovery clues that will become the basis of the questions you ask your students to answer in your finished Dig.

Oaks Middle School--My students enjoyed the treasure hunt that was posted during
the end of january. The buttons were linked to the page with the information. It just
about has to be for my students or they give up.
I have done a few passport expeditions and the students have to work to find
the answers. They tend to give up if they cant find the answer on the first page.
Hopefully, this info helps you to organize other treasure hunts or similar activities.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 8:17PM PST (-0800 GMT)
This teacher training is a pilot test of a style of online training we would like to incorporate oct/nov and feb/mar each year to help teachers keep in touch and gain new skills. When you get through, please let me know if you think it has potential.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 8:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Kathy - There is also another style of hunt up year round in the Treasure Island section under Channel reading - they have to search for an island, then estimate the location of a buried treasure based on historical references. We are finding these guided learning acitivites have the best student results.
Kathy Markos : . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 8:31PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Answer to #6: The Luck of the Roaring Camp was an infant baby, Tommy
Bret Harte wrote the story.
The miners cat was blown up, but walked away. Mark Twain wrote the story.

Oaks Middle School--The brochure for the Science Night is complete. I
will send you a copy. Also, I will teach my students how
to participate in a chat before that evening. I usually control
the chat in class by only having one computer logged on and
asking the class the question and have one student at a time
type in the questions. I will train the students how to do the
chat with their parents and all computers will be on live
for the science night evening chat.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 8:38PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Kathy - I have the Oaks Science Night down as Apr 4, 6-8pm. Let me know if that is correct so we can set calendars.

Oaks Middle School--This picture of Yosemite is my favorite.
I was fortunate enough to visit Yosemite when I was 17 yrs old
and took a lot of pictures. At that time, I was really into
photography and though of being a professional photographer at the time.
Kathy Markos : . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 8:43PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy--yes I think that date and time is correct.
Kathy Markos : . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 8:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)

Kathy Markos : . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 8:52PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy,
So my class is supposed to do some research and bookmark some sites to create our
own internet dig? Since I am Channel Island, should I stick to the channel island topics?
Kathy Markos : . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 8:56PM PST (-0800 GMT)
This evening I learned how to make a link to a web site to post in a chat room. I think
this is very exciting because I can ask my students to think of some questions to post. They
will still have to read and learn the information, but posting questions adds a new
way for them to learn. And, they will enjoy creating the challenge.
Kathy Markos : . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 8:58PM PST (-0800 GMT)

Kathy Markos : . . . . Tue, Mar 7, 8:59PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thanks Marcy for the information. Good-bye
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Wed, Mar 8, 3:08PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Kathy - over the next few weeks we will help teachers locate and format resources to create their own guided Internet Dig. Then you will reserve a time to use the chat room, we will clear it, and you will host your own Internet Dig. the students will be impressed with waht their teachers have been abel to create ! If you want, you can have students suggest urls to include in your dig, but the teacher is reponsible for the final project and to reserve the chat room time for the Dig. Teachers who enjoy their results can also invite other classrooms to join their students in the Dig and get school-to-school Digs going.

DIG DEVELOPMENT Stage Two …… By now you will have selected the artist or writer and a plant and/or animal who will be the subject of your Dig. We are going to introduce you to two additional resources that you can use as reliable sites to send the students to in order to learn more about the topics you are going to focus on. You can also use resources that you are familiar with already.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 6:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
First …… take a look at this digital library of plants. From the first page you can type in the name of a native plant. Select California as the State, and you will find a library of photographs. When you open each photograph, you will then get the botanical information about that plant. button As you use this resource, decide how you want to present it to the students. You can take them to the same search page and have them locate different resources that they then answer questions about. Or, for younger students, take them right to a specific web page that immediately shows the answers to the questions your formulate.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 6:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Second …….. now we will use the same digital library, but we will go in under their animal resources. Even if you are not planning to use an animal at this time in the Dig, go ahead and select one to test out this database. The animal image library is not as large as the plant repository. button
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 6:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Third … start practicing .. invent a few simple questions, include a linked button to where the answer is, and we will all test out your sample Dig discoveries. Remember, you must include the ENTIRE URL starting with the http:// to make the buttons work.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 6:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Fourth …. move on now from simple Dig questions to comparative Dig questions where several buttons are included in your text and the reader must review both, analyze the content, and then make a decision as to which location holds the correct answer.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 7:00AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Fifth … now comes the art of the storyteller. In a successful dig, a story is being told that is revealed through the questions and answers. Put together four Dig Discovery questions that tell a story about the artist work you have selected. You can include a question from their biography that the Camp has online, a question related to the work itself, a question about an image in the work, and then a link out to a remote database, for example. These are trial efforts, don’t worry about presenting a finished dig scenario just yet.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 7:00AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sixth …… you will now be ready to post your four questions individually. Be sure to number them, preceded by teacher’s name. Example : Mr. Smith Dig Discovery #1 …. Mr. Smith Dig Discovery #2 ….. then we will all be able to test out the flow between the questions.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 7:01AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Seventh … test your results … make any changes you would like to test out and repost as needed. Be sure to come back in to the acitivity area to test the other teacher’s Digs too and offer any suggestions that would be helpful. Even after this activity is no longer a live session, you will be able to refer to it in the Chat Archives.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 7:09AM PST (-0800 GMT)
In closing for Stage Two … you will now have tried out different question presentation styles – from simple direct questions to the comparative analysis questions. You have also had a chance to begin practicing the creation of a continuous story that weaves the questions and answers for the Dig into a unified theme. Over the next week, prepare a word document that starts to weave your Internet Dig together. If you use Microsoft Word or another software that allows you to see live links inside the text document, you will be able to test-out the flow of the Dig you are building from inside the word document, with out using the Chat room, but you will need to be online as you do this testing. Next time we meet, be prepared to come into the activity area with a formulated word-version of your Dig handy on your computer. You will then practice copying and pasting that document, complete with its URL links, into the chat room and will test the results.

#1 Watkins hauled a big camera into Yosemite in 1861.
Charles Weed took photos of Yosemite in 1859.
Watkins' work caught the attention of collectors.
Janet Gallatin: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 7:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
#2 Albert Bierstadt painted Yosemite in 1863. Largest panorama he painted with 15 feet by 9 1/2 feet high! Wow! How did he get it out?
Janet Gallatin: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 7:48PM PST (-0800 GMT)
#3 Thomas Hill moved to Wawona in 1886, and was the first artist to live in Yosemite year round.
Janet Gallatin: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 7:53PM PST (-0800 GMT)
#5 Whistler painted two flocks of seagulls in v formation and was fired because his employers were not pleased with his deviating from the contract.
Whisler was an engraver for the Coast and Geodectic Survey project. He was paid $1.50/day for engraving the east end of Anacapa Island.
Janet Gallatin: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 7:57PM PST (-0800 GMT)
#4 Elmer Wachtel (1864-1929) overcame deafness (however, I am not sure if that is a handicap to be a great painter). I am not really an expert at identifying plants, so I am guessing that he painted oaks, Calif. poppys and blue lupine which I know are native Calif. plants.
Janet Gallatin: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 8:04PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I keep having difficulties with my service provider. I continue to get an error message "Access Violation" when I click on certain buttons, and get shut down. I will keep plodding along.

I really didn't understand the button instructions until I tried it. I didn't understand that the button features must be built in your program, because with other prgrams, you need to link the url to the object you select. Really nice feature, and very easy.
Janet Gallatin: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 8:17PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I have enjoyed working through this lesson. I have found that the Internet digs are a wonderful learning tool for my students. It really teaches them to read for meaning, how to search for information, and how to scan reading.
I would like to be able to create my own digs.
Thank you very much.
Good night.
Marcy, Camp Counsleor: . . . . Thu, Mar 9, 8:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thank you Janet for your progress tonight and comments. We look forwards to seeing the Teacher's Digs become another spark encouraging student understanding of the Internet as a multi-level learning tool. These Digs put the Internet to work in a new way and encourage problem solving skill development in any subject.
