There were many such families. Joseph Chapman from the Eastern U.S. married Guadalupe Ortega at Mission Santa Ines around 1820. Others who had U.S./Californiano marriages were Daniel Hill, William G. Dana, Alfred Robinson, Alpheus B. Thompson, Thomas Robbins, and Lewis Burton. The Den brothers came from Ireland. Nicholas married one of Hill's daughters. Jose Covarrubias came from France and married a Carrlllo. Augustin Jansenns came from Belgium and married a Pico. Several have descendants living in California.

Is it possible they are migrating away ? Or is it thoguht to be a disease problem ?

Steve S: . . . . Thu, Mar 16, 11:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Marcy,
The short answer is: We don't know. 38 percent of the otters found dead have died of disease... that's a huge number. Also otters are shot by vandals (5%). And, we know that otters are accidentally killed in fishing gear. At San Nic, there have been over 50 births, but the population never grows. Disease, fishing gear (lobster traps) and swimming away from the Island are all possibilities.

Dear Brown Pelicans: When the Spanish came to S Barbara 200 years ago, they built forts, for protections, created Missions, to convert the Indians to Christianity, and also built towns called pueblos and also a few ranchos were granted to grow crops and for livestock to feed the soldiers, their families, and the Indians. Brown Pelicans, Madison School : . . . . Thu, Mar 16, 11:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Steve S: . . . . Thu, Mar 16, 11:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Otters don't really make great pets... they are related to weasels ... they are too energetic! And sea otters eat about 25% of their bodyweight per day... so a 60 pound otter needs about 15 pounds of food per day.
: . . . . Thu, Mar 16, 11:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Well, there was one famous pirate who attacked Presidios. He was a Frenchman named Bouchard, a revolutionary who sailed under the flag of Argentina. With his two ships and 300 plus men he attacked the Presidio of Monterey to the north--and burned it to the ground. He was going to attack the S Barbara Presidio but was outfoxed by Capt. De la Guerra. If you want to know more let me know. Jerry Jackman

Steve - in the natural food chain, other than humans, who might prey on sea otters ?
Steve S: . . . . Thu, Mar 16, 11:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Starfish! I wish there were! There was a deal made in the early 80s to allow sea otters to be moved to San Nicolas, but no other otters would be allowed south of Pt. Conception. Otters don't know that the "line" exists and they are starting to return to the Channel. It is very controversial.

Marcy: Eagles are known to take pups in Alaska. Also, white sharks and Orcas (killer whales) will eat otters. In Alaska right now there are many otters being eaten by Orcas because the seal and sea lion populations (the Orcas normal food) have collapsed.

Zorro--now there is the subject for you. Last year, Zorro visited the Presidio and took on my soldiers. That day Iwas Governor Goicoechea. Zorro won, and then declared peace. and we had a party.
This year on April 21 Don Quixote the famous knight from Spain is coming to El Presidi. He will be arriving at 5 pm with his sidekick, Sancho Panza. Rumor has it he is going to have an encounter with Zorro. Don't miss it, please bring your parents.
By the way, there was a real Zorro in California. Rumor has it that he actually lived in SB and his real name was Salomon Pico. He sought revenge, supposedly, against Americans who killed his wife.
With regard to the split between the North and South during the Mexicna period. SB sided with both sides, depending on who was governor, or claimed to be governor, at the time. More if you want to hear it. Now I am Governor Goicoechea of the Presidio of SB.

Marcy -- Sea otters have a huge effect. Diversity and productivity increase when sea otters return. Sea otters eat the grazers (urchins and abalone), the kelp returns, then all the fish that use kelp return, and all the other snails and crabs that use kelp return. A kelp forest is the most productive ecosystem on earth. So if you have more kelp forests, the environment benefits

Mammoths -- They can, but there is a law that says they aren't supposed to... kind of a silly law (but I am biased). The otters expanded their range to return to the Santa Barbara Channel in 1998. Some urchin fishermen are very upset.

Richard Henry Dana visited Casa de la Guerra in 1836 for Robinson's wedding to Anita de la Guerra. Joseph Chapman, who left Bouchard's ship and decided to stay in California, was talented as an engineer and construction designer. He designed and built the fulling mill at Mission Santa Ines, but not the mission itself. The fulling mill is next to the grist mill, downhill and across the creek from the mission. The fulling mill was used to process and soften woolen cloth for use in clothing, etc. Chapman and his wife would have lived near the mission while he was living there. Some of their children were baptized there. When they moved to Santa Barbara they built an adobe house in the 400 block of Anacapa Street. The site is now protected. An old photograph shows part of it.
Yes, presidios were damaged by earthquakes. The Santa Barbara Presidio was badly damaged in the 1812 earthquake, just like Mission Santa Barbara was. They were rebuilt. The Fort Tejon quake damaged the presidio again, although it was not really in use then.

A presidio is a fortress, a type of fort used for protection from attacks. They were built in most of the Spanish colonies. Military soldiers and their families lived in and around them. They were usually built in an open square shape, with a marching ground in the center.
The strongest presidio, according to Santa Barbara Presidio's archaeologist, is Morro Fort in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is still there, overlooking the sea. I have been there. It is built mostly of stone. Our Santa Barbara Presidio has the most standing buildings left of the four that existed in upper California.

The missions were named after saints by the Priests. Since the California was frounded by Franciscan Priests... most of the missions were named after Francisican Saints. And of course the founder of the Franciscans was none other than St. Francis himself. I have to sign off: this has been fun.
