We have a list of questions we would like you each to answer, and then you are also welcome to post questions to one another. Please introduce yourselves as a group when you arrive in the debate room, and then respond to the questions posted below. Once you have posted your answers, it will be time to question your opponent's answers. Think about their viewpoint, about what they have posted, and form challenging questions for them. It is fine to say "we do not agree with that" but you must then state why, and what your own viewpoint is. Good Luck !!

is anyone there
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
#2. If they are willing to spend millions of $ to pipe water
from Yosemite to San Francisco they can build Desalination
Plants to get rid of the salt in the water.
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:26AM PST (-0800 GMT)
3- It should be built around water so they wouldn't have to take water from places like Yosemite.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:26AM PST (-0800 GMT)
2.Yes,San Fransisco does have other options for water. The ocean and the San Fransisco Bay are great places to take water from. They can destill the salt water to make water drinkable. Also, the salt water helps put out fires.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)
#4 Yes, water is a safety issue but salt water is just as good
as normal water to put out fires.
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
3- It should be built around water so they wouldn't have to take water from places like Yosemite.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
#6 No,If the animals and plants were here first we have no
right to take their water.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
10.Our water at homecomes from the lake.Called Lake Arrowhead. We also get our water from water tanks that are hidden around the area.
wolf pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
San Fransico does have other options like they could
take water from the ocean or use desalination
Wolf Pack 2: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:32AM PST (-0800 GMT)
#5 No,it isn't present to man at it's own distroction because it'll already distroyed.
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:32AM PST (-0800 GMT)
7- No.Yes they could desalinate the the ocean water.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:34AM PST (-0800 GMT)
#8 To protect the national parks San Francisco must build
Desalination Plants to not get rid of the plants and animals
who all ready live there.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello other class are you here yet????????????????????????????
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
6. No, people have no right to destroy the natual resources of Yosemite Valley. It is a beautiful place that should not be destroyed.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Lakearrowhead. I notice you are waiting for Ridgeview. I just tried calling their school and there was no answer. Please check back in an hour and we'll see if we can get them online ... thanks !
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
10. the water that comes out of our sink comes from the lake arrowhead lake
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thanks marcy
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We are the champions we are the champions no time for
losers cause we are the champions of the world.
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:43AM PST (-0800 GMT)
9- water conservation and desalinazation are good for the envirment.
wolf pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
San Fransico does have other options like they could
take water from the ocean or use desalination
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
we've called down the school administator to play the part of the san francisco buisnessman
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:48AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi San Francisco buisnessman we are ready for the debate.
Are you?
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:48AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Businessman!
Are ya there?
SF H20 INC CEO: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:49AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello. We are ready to discuss this issue.
SF H20 INC CEO: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:50AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Let me ask you this. What is more important, people or animals?
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:50AM PST (-0800 GMT)
both
Wolf pack 3: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:51AM PST (-0800 GMT)
it depends in certain questions.
SF H20 INC CEO: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:51AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Can you immagine a city of 3 million people without enough water to drink?
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:52AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Animals were here first so lets respect them.
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:52AM PST (-0800 GMT)
yea who cares about san fransiscans
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:53AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Build desalination plant to rid of salt for the people to drink.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:53AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The animals are much more important because they were there first and they should stay there for many generations to come.
wolf pack 5: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:53AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Animalsarem more inportant because if there weren't any animals there woudn't be any meat for people to eat
SF H20 INC CEO: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We do respect them. Did you know the Sierra Club was headquartered here, in the Bay Area? San Francisco has always been sensitive to wildlife and the environment.
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
why don't you just take the water out of the san fransisco
bay area.
Wolf pack 3: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
No, but it is just not fair that you do that to the animals.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:56AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Then why do you want to dam up a river for more water
for yourselfs if you respect it so.
SF H20 INC CEO: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:56AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We have done extensive research into applying the desalinization process to our city. The results indicated that desalinization would cost too much and would take money away from other city programs like day care, housing for homeless people and public transportation.
Wolf pack 3: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:56AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:57AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Well your not to sensitive to them because if you respected them so much you wouldn't take away their water source that might even kill them.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:57AM PST (-0800 GMT)
why do you want to get the water out of Yosemite if its going to hurt the animals
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
That is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo untrue!!!
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
well if you want to pipe water from yosmite it will cost more than building desalination plants.
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 9:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
If you want to use water to put out fires, why not take it out of San francisco bay because you can put out fires easier that way.
SF H20 INC CEO: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:00AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We want to take water from the Yosemite Valley because it is the most cost effective way for us to solve our municipal water shortage. We feel that this can be done without impacting the local environment of the Yosemite Valley adversely.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:01AM PST (-0800 GMT)
and damming up the river would make John Muir's work done in vain.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:01AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Well it will very much effect the environment.
Tsunami, PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
HI - we are a small school that participates with Camp Internet - we'd like to take the environmentalists role today ...
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
You might be putting some animals on the endangered species list.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:03AM PST (-0800 GMT)
If a aqueduct burst it would flood certain areas and cause bad erosion.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:03AM PST (-0800 GMT)
well taking water from yosemite will take away water from the animals.
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:03AM PST (-0800 GMT)
well , thinkkk about the pipe maintance and waste
of money
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:04AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi other school!!You are not the environmentalists. We are.
SF H20 INC CEO: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:04AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Consider this. If a well thought out plan, like the one we are presently developing, had been in place at the time of the great flood in the Yosemite Valley of 1997 the damage and devastation to the valley and its wildlife inhabitants would have probably not occurred.
Ayami, PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:04AM PST (-0800 GMT)
1. Population has grown in San Franicsco so more water is required.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:05AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi other school!!You are not the environmentalists. We are!
Wolf Pack : . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:05AM PST (-0800 GMT)
yosemite is general veiw of the public is to leave it
as it is today
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:05AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Im sorry Tsunami,PHS we have done extensive research for the
debate and we would like to do it
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:07AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Tsunami, PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:07AM PST (-0800 GMT)
2. One of San Francisco's other options for water is to damn rivers lower in the foothills, in more open lands that would not damage as much wildlife, nor destroy the priceless wonders of the Sierra Nevada.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:08AM PST (-0800 GMT)
well it recovered without help from us.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:08AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Nope! Do you recall the ruin that happened to the Hetch Hethy vally a long time age! That will happen to the beautiful Yosemite Valley. And no other people will be allowed to visit and tour Yosemite.
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:09AM PST (-0800 GMT)
If people wanted to see oneof the most beutifull national parks that lived near Yosemite they wouldn't go see it they'd have to travel to Yellowstone because Yosemite would be ugly.
SF developers /PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:09AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Ok, we see you are the environmentalists - ok - we will take the other role ... not as easy, but we'll sure try !
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:10AM PST (-0800 GMT)
thank you!!!!!!!
SF H20 INC CEO: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:11AM PST (-0800 GMT)
A properly designed and constructed system of aquaducts, dams, hydroelectric plants would enhance the quality of life for all: the citizens of San Francisco and the inhabitants of the beautiful Yosemite Valley.
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:11AM PST (-0800 GMT)
w
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:11AM PST (-0800 GMT)
If you would take just a week to visit Yosemite you will release the beauty and memory. It's unforrgettable. And without all the waterfalls, rivers, streams, and springsYosemite wouldn't be Yosemite.and it would be lifeless.
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:12AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thank you very much.
SF developers /PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:13AM PST (-0800 GMT)
1. San Francisco has used up the loan money it borrowed to recover from the 1906 earthquake. This terrible quake devastated the City, and the fires that broke out were as bad or worse as the quake damage. We need help now to get a water source that will help the city grow and prosper.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:13AM PST (-0800 GMT)
take away the water take away the life that lives there.
SF developers /PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:14AM PST (-0800 GMT)
2. The Hetch Hetchy appears to be the least expensive way to get water to our City. It saves the San Francisco people money if the project costs less.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
take the water from the ocean and you dont have to desalt it.
Wolf Pack3: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
use sea water it works better to fight fires.
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
You should use Desilination Plants.
SF developers /PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
3. Cities tend to out grow their water sources through out history. If cities were built up where the water sources are, we would not be able to ship our goods as easily as setting our citires and ports on the ocean. It would cost more to move our goods from the mtns to the ocean.
wolfpack1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
well you you took water and it was runied.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:16AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We are debating in the year 2000 and we are talking nothing about a long time ago.(This is a mock debate)Meaning fake.
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:17AM PST (-0800 GMT)
If you did that all of John Muir's work would be done in vain.
SF deveeloper/PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:18AM PST (-0800 GMT)
4. San Francisco has been burned near to the ground several times since the Gold Rush. Keeping people safe is our #1 responsibility. The press may say we are only out to line our own pockets, but we are a group of civic minded people who have the best interests of San Farncsco society in mind.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:18AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Highschool class are you here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:19AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Don't go back to the past.It has nothing to do with now.
Camp Debate Team: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:20AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Wolf Pack - are you saying you would like this debate to be more historic feeling ? or that you want to talk about now and today ?
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:20AM PST (-0800 GMT)
6 words salt water to put out fires
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:20AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Now and Today!
: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:20AM PST (-0800 GMT)
now and today
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:20AM PST (-0800 GMT)
If you had a fire you could take salt water from the ocean
which works alot better and there is a lot more of it.
Wolf Pack3: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:21AM PST (-0800 GMT)
now and to day
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:21AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I repeat.Now and Today.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:21AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Wolf Pack - if we do not remember the mistakes that have been made by the people who came before us, it is much harder to make the right decisions today. It helps you have the strength to do better work today if you understand how people have won and lost other issues in the past.
wolf pack 1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:22AM PST (-0800 GMT)
well we learn from our mistakes.
Wolf Pack : . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:23AM PST (-0800 GMT)
pull water from the ocean
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:23AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Why don't they just take water from the Ocean(there is plenty)
Instead of pulling water from the beautiful Yosemite.
wolf pack 1: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
wolf pack #1 leading the herd
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Alright, now, today. Here is the issue. There are people, right now today, who wants to bring down the dam at Hetch Hetchy and relocate it to another place. But there are tremendous financial costs to do this. This is a hard decision. And dams all over the West are been studied to see if they do more damage than good. But to make these decisions, people want to know what worked and what didin't work before. That is why history tells us a story that helps us be smarter today. What do you think people should do about the Hetch Hetchy today ?
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
PULL FROM THE OCEAN NOT YOSEMITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wolf Pack3: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
wolf pack three bye
Wolf Pack : . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:25AM PST (-0800 GMT)
wolf pack 3 signing off
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:25AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Wolf Pack signing off!!!!!!!!!!:(
wolf pack: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:26AM PST (-0800 GMT)
is it over?
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:26AM PST (-0800 GMT)
yea! It's over
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Here is a link that dicusses reasons to un-dam the Hetch Hetchy. Do you think this is a good argument ? Or is there a problem with it ? Is the return we will get worth the cost ? button
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:28AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy! It was a great chat.We enjoyed studing and preparing for this chat.Thankyou!
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Did we Win!I hope so.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy!Are you there?
SF developers, PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
5. A City supports human life, the highest life form on earth, and deserves to use any resource it needs, with in reason, to grow and become a safe, beautiful city to support cutural, economic, and intellectual acheivments.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:31AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The chats over
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:31AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Wolf Pack - I am hopig to reschedule with Mr. Bartlett's class - they missed out on your well prepared and enthusiastic postings. Thanks for coming !
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:32AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Did we win
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:34AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy-Will the chat be about the same subject?
SF developers, PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:34AM PST (-0800 GMT)
7. What you environemntalists need to understand is that people will be angry if we spend anymore than the absolutely cheapest way to get them water. The tax payers will pay for this. If THEY cared about the environment themselves, then they would be willing to pay a few dollars more each to put the dam somewhere other than the Hetch Hetchy. We have to act in the interests of the people.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:35AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The Chat is over!
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:36AM PST (-0800 GMT)
From what we have seen today it may be more rewarding for the students if they all take the environmentalists voice, so we could pre-post the developers comments and that will give them something hisoroically colorful to respond to. Do you think that would be a good improvement or not ?
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:37AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Could you say that in simpler words? Please!
Wolf Pack3: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thats a great change!\
SF developers, PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
8. The advantage to using public lands is that there is no land pruchase cost. If we have to buy land, we could never afford to build this project - it would take too much money, more than we could raise. This way the government shares in the burden.
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy-would you please tell us when the next chat will be.
I realllllly liked it.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
simpler words is a good idea - what if the Camp posts the developer's comments ahead at the top of the chat room and then the students all get to argue for the environmentalist's position ...
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Great idea!
Wolf Pack 00: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy!That's great
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:43AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I will propose May 5th or 9th as the time to join in the debate again. Let me check with Ridgeview and get them online too. I will let Mrs. Ross know what date they can agree to ( I think today they may have forgotten they were out for Easter ). Happy John Muir's Birthday - think how he would have loved to hear the student's fight for Hetch Hetchy today !! Its does him honor. Thanks !
PHS: . . . . Fri, Apr 21, 10:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Happy E Day ;)

We are VERY proud of you all for putting such good heart into your view points. And the urgency to talk about today is very good. History is important, but our action today is even more so. You are fortunate in your communtiy to have a natural, local water supply. Our office also does. But many people do not even know where there water comes from ! Helping people think about water issues is in itself important. Tell people what you have learned here !! That is what Earth day is all about - helping people live more in tune with nature every day.
