Both groups were similar because both lived on the Channel Island during the same period of time. Both groups had some contact in trading. They are different in their origin and language base. The Chumash lived on the Islands of Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel, whereas, the Gabrielinos lived on Santa Catalina.

6. In 1542, the first European to reach the channel islands was Juan Rodrigues Cabrillo. Cabrillo reached the islands while searching for an alternative route to China. Cabrillo was also the first Spainard to have contact with both the Pimugan and Chumash tribes.
