WELCOME to ****** Reporters Wanted : Lone Woman of San Nicolas Story ******* ............................... It has been 150 years ago this year since the first rescue party went out to search for the Lone Woman of San Nicolas to rescue her from her 18 year isolation on the most remote Channel Island. But all they saw as a ghostly apparition beckoning to them. It was in 1853 that she was finally found and rescued.

Here is a description of her discovery that was published by an anonymous writer in a Sacramento newspaper on October 13, 1853 – the same year she was found. After reading it, write us your own 100 word short newspaper feature ( non-fiction ) on the historical events surrounding her recovery in 1853, pretend you are a writer who has learned about this amazing event and is giving your town news of what has happened.................................................. “The wild woman who was found on the island of San Nicolas about 70 miles from the coast, west of Santa Barbara, is now at the latter place and is looked upon as a curiosity. It is stated she has been some 18 to 20 years alone on the island. She existed on shell fish and the fat of the seal, and dressed in the skins and feathers of wild ducks, which she sewed together with sinews of the seal. She cannot speak any known language, is good-looking and about middle age. She seems to be contented in her new home among the good people of Santa Barbara. “

Each Camp student has a variety of resources at their disposal to learn about this legendary woman. Have them combine resources – film, book, online historical accounts – to write their own 100-or-more-word news article that would have been a description of her ordeal and rescue. Publication date would be October 12th, 1853 and they can ‘scoop’ the above Sacramento writer. Here is a link to the Camp's resources about her ......button

FOUND AFTER 18 YEARS ALONE!!! In the year of 1835 some sailors of San Nicolas came to take the people of Galas-at to California. When every body was on the ship except a young woman's baby. The mother pleaded with the captain to go back but if he went back the ship would not make it to California. The young mother jumped out of the boat and into the stormy sea. The young mother was between 20 and 30 years old. She was mid height and in fine condition. She was rescued by Captain Niveder in 1853. She was taken to the island San Nicolas. They could not find any of her people. She did not speak the same language as the Spanish. That is how the lone woman of Ghalas-at got saved.

Far out of the coast of California looms a rock name The island of San Nicolas, dolphins flash around in the sea and make and lots of noise was a girl who was on that island and was stranded until she was thirty six. Juana Maria got saved by catholic padre and two other people and took her to the place where the people were. Karana got saved at the age of thirty six , and so that means she jumped off the boat when she was sixteen years old. Juana Maria got stranded on Gala-at because her brother was on the island to go to get something from the house it was a ......... fishing pole. So Juana Maria went to save him but when she got there the ship was barley seen.

Madison 1:12 posting - Thanks for posting your SCOOP - but to really scoop the other writer you need to get a few facts straightened out .........two comments for you to consider to attain historical accuracy ... first ... California was not a state yet in 1835, but was in 1853 ... it was called Alta California when she was left behind, and California when she was found ... also ...... you write "She was taken to san Nicolas Island" .. when that is where she was rescued FROM ... where was she then taken to ??? hint - two different places and one WAS an island .. the largest in the chain .... Can you make these corrections and re-post ?
