“The wild woman who was found on the island of San Nicolas about 70 miles from the coast, west of Santa Barbara, is now at the latter place and is looked upon as a curiosity. It is stated she has been some 18 to 20 years alone on the island. She existed on shell fish and the fat of the seal, and dressed in the skins and feathers of wild ducks, which she sewed together with sinews of the seal. She cannot speak any known language, is good-looking and about middle age. She seems to be contented in her new home among the good people of Santa Barbara. “

Each Camp student has a variety of resources at their disposal to learn about this legendary woman. Have them combine resources – film, book, online historical accounts – to write their own 100-or-more-word news article that would have been a description of her ordeal and rescue. Publication date would be October 12th, 1853 and they can ‘scoop’ the above Sacramento writer. To read the historical account, go to the bottom of this page and begin following the trail of her story .... button

Human Footprint Leads To Life On Deserted Island July 1853 Santa Barbara After the terrible storm, the explorers discovered the print of a slender naked foot. The crew reported that "the footprint led us to clues." The next day, Nidiver, the explorer found a basket that contained a robe made up of seagull's feather. With further questioning as he crept closer and watched a woman in a low woven-brush roofless enclosure. Upon questioning, we found out why she was on the island alone, and where her family lived. It is determined that she had been looking for her baby on the boats, but he/she was not found. The crew reported that she had never found her baby before her eighteen years alone. With further questioning, we found that she lived on fish, seal's blubber, roots and shellfish; and the birds, whose skins were used for clothing. These birds were sea birds. Upon questioning, we relized that the bush enclosures were what the Lone Woman had used as screens for protection. She made frequent trips to a large cave on the north end of San Nicholas. The real mystery has still not been revieled. Some scientific questions have still not been answered. By: Natasha and Da Young

Please look over your copy tho as many sentences are not complete thoughts ... Natasha and Da - this setnence is not a full thought : With further questioning as he crept closer and watched a woman in a low woven-brush roofless enclosure. ............. Second sotry has no student name but here is a contradiction that needs to be resolved : He was her baby,so she went to save him. After the wild dogs that had killed her brother, the Indian woman was all alone. ... in the REAL event - who was left behind - her babay or her brother ?

You go into details of what was found and that makes it more interesting - plus you mention the beckoning woman - very intriguing - just polish up the sentences so they are full thoughts and resubmit.

Hector - you have a good foundation to build on .. maybe some more details ? And were there 'houses' on the hills ? That doesn't sound right if it was a deserted island. Also, I think the figure on the cliff and the basket of goods were found on two diferent trips out ? check your facts ... resubmit soon ...

Human Footprint Leads To Life on Deserted Island Of San Nicholas. A Crew of people lead by Nidiver in July of of 1853 they discovered there is a woman that lives on the island. When they were seaching for the woman they found clothing and food. Nidiver also found a basket of rushes in a tree.It contained lots of items such as bone needle, thread made of sinews, shellfish hooks, ornamants, & a partly completed robe of bird feathers. A group of sea otter hunters reported that they saw a figure of a woman beckoning and shouting when they visited the island. When they returned with the woman to Santa Barbara she explained she had survived on seal blubber, abolone, and dried meat. We hope this remarkable survivor has a good life, here in Santa Barbara. These reporters will keep you informed.

Phantom of San Nicholas Revealed! An Indian woman was stranded on an island because her baby was not on the rescue boat so she jumped over board but never found her baby. She lived on the deserted island for 18 years. She lived in a cave, also in a bush, and made many supplies for her survival. The food she made was dried meat hanging from a tree. Today in the year of 1853 Captain Nidiver and his crew found a clue that a person was living on the islands. The first clue they found was a footprint in the sand. They climed on a mountain and they found a figure in the hills. They met the indian woman and couldn't believe she was living. No one knows what the indian woman's culture was and what happened to her baby.

Woman Survives Eighteen years Alone After eighteen years, Lone Woman finally was discovered. Sea otter hunters reported that they saw a woman with long black hair telling them to come to her. Nidiver has now found the clue of the woman's slender naked foot. Nidiver also found a basket of rushes hanging in a tree. Nidiver proposed replacing the things, but Brown scattered them around, saying that, if they were picked up, it would be proof that the owner has visited the spot. Lone Woman has lived on fish, seals blubber, roots, and shellfish: and the birds, whose skins she used for clothing, were seabirds. And for protection she made bush enclosures to keep the dogs frm getting her. Nidiver has taken her to Santa Cruz Island for a month long hunting trip. None can speak her language.
