dig#3 One theory of how mammoths went to the channel islands is that they floated on debris from a riverbank. Another theory is that they smelled food from the islands and they swam the channel. I think they floated to the islands.

Dig #1=Duringthe ice age where polar ice caps hold more of the earth's waters frozen, and the sea levels are lower than any human being has since ever seen. With the lower sea level, more of the earth's surfaace is exposed to the air and sun, and the shape of the islands and coastline along the California Channel is much different than today. Dig #2=Fossils are the remains of very ancient life that has been buried for thousands of years and preserved in a very ancient layer of earth. Some fossils have been found suspended in fossilized tree sap, like amber. Paleontologies study the geology-the earth, rocks and minerals. paleontology is the study of the fossil record. Dig #3=The mammoths migrate and swim. The mammoths migrates westwards crossing to the rugged, moutainous Santa Cruz Island, then to Santa Rosa Island, and on to San Miguel Island. The mammoths swim to Anacapa Island. I think migrating is the most likely one, because when babies are born, they run out of breath when they swim. Dig #4=They settle among the ferticle green rolling hills lush with native vegetarion, and multiply, forming many family bands roaming the island. Dig #5=They were full- sized mammoths. They were about 14 feet tall as adults. They are called Imperial Mammoths. This was their type and size. Dig #6=They changed by reaching heights of 4-8 feet, significantly smaller than their predecessors. Their tusks were up to five or more feet long, and were five to six inches in diameter. Dig #7=They've been found in Malta and Sicily, Southwest of Italy, the Island of Ceyoln, near India, Wrangle Island, north of Siberia, Santa Rosa and San Miguel Island. Dig #8=The elephants of today are surprisingly strong swimmers, a characteristic they seem to have inherited directly from their ancesters, the mammoths. They even known to use their truncks like a snorkle to keep a fresh supply of air even when somewhat submerged. Dig #9=On San Miguel the northern, aranch manager, Herbert Lester was exploring the island. Herbert and his wife Elizabeth Sherman Lester found the tusks of an extinct species Elphus Imperator-the great elephant. From 1948-1960's the curator of geology and archeology from the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, Phil C. Orr, collected more than 200 parts of approximatly 50 mammoths. No mammoth bones were being found on Santa Cruz Island.

Torey and Michael-Mary Buren: . . . . Fri, Oct 27, 11:28AM PST (-0800 GMT)
#3 The two theories were they either swam or some scientists say they followed the scent of vegetation then swam across to mainland from Anacapa island. We think they most likely swam then followed the vegetation.

Channel Island Quiz Answers #1Channel Island has a different landscape. The shoreline is onehundred fifty feet to three hundred feet lower than we see it today. #2 Fossils are the remainings of very ancient life that has been burried for thousands of years. Paleontalogy is the study of fossils. #3 The mammoths cross the rigged mountains to get across. I think that they swam across.I think swimming would have been faster. #4 The climate would be sunny and cool. I think the vegetation was chewy and sweet. #5 The imperial mammoth arrived at the channel island at 14 ft tall as an adult. #6 There scales and tusks changed. #7 The pygmy mammoths have been located in Malty and Sicily, southwest of Italy. The island of Ceylon, near India. Wrangle Island North of Siberia, Santa Rosa and San Miguel Island. 8# The animals that helped us understand have either died or have been captured. 9# The mammoths in Santa Rosa are Columbi and Elphis Imperator.
