Welcome to the Teacher / Librarian Camp Internet Chat on suggested reading materials for students and teachers who are camp participants. During November, December, and January, we will host three of these sessions to encourage our school's librarians to become more familiar with the Camp Program, to gather lists of suggested reading materials that can compliment the Camp activities, and to coordinate participants for a grant application to the California State Library to bring more Camp resources and teacher/librarian training and materials to your campus next year. The Camp Internet Directors were working in the Santa Barbara Public Library when they began their online resource development and feel a strong loyalty to libraries as critically important learning resources for schools and communities.

You are currently reading this in a password protected environment in the Teacher’s Chat room that is teachers-only. In order to access all areas of the Camp you will be taken to today, if you are prompted to log in, please use the Log-in and Password of …. campdemo …. and …. islbcsw ….. to access the main pages. You are welcome to come back and use the resources again later using the same ID and Password. This log in provides you with teacher-level access; students do not have this same level of access as it includes class management and answer resources. Please do NOT allow any student to use this code, it is for your private use only. Thanks.

First, lets show you some samples of the Camp program, starting with the Channel Islands Expedition. Click on this button to visit the main Islands page ……… and then click on this button to visit the reading section for Islands …….. Here is an example of a literature / historical source material project we do that combines book, film, and online original source materials from the 1800s to tell the story of the Lone Woman of San Nicholas …... be sure to use the links at the bottom of the page to go through the original source materials that Island of the Blue Dolphins is based on.

Now, lets look at the excerpts we have from Two Years Before the Mast … button … this is an example of putting copyright free materials online. The biographical introduction then has selected relevant chapters at the bottom. The benefit to this reading resource is that it identifies exactly the passages pertaining to our subject matter, it does have the shortcoming of no illustrations and lengthy online reading, but it can be printed out. Our goal is to get as much copyright free material online AND to encourage our partner libraries to also make it available in print.

The Camp’s Treasure Island section button is presented during the history section on Channel Island Pirates and compliments the true histories of Channel Pirates with Stevenson’s famous work. If you have not had a chance to learn about the year Stevenson spent in California, please take a look at this button as it is a wonderful romance that spanned the continents and seas.

Camp Internet also sends out selected books in its Expedition Supply Crates each year, and offers related online learning activities and hands-on class/school yard activities to bring the stories to life. One good example id the Rainbow Bridge Chumash Story and game we sent teachers back with from summer training this year … and you can read about it here button

This year we will be adding original 1920s Zorro excerpts from an exciting copyright free collection that is in an out-of-publication source, and providing chapters of Ramona for online reading. Providing out-of-print source materials is a unique capability of Internet learning centers, and we search for and purchase original sources all year long. Collecting these source materials is a great project, one we enjoy sharing with our teachers, students and librarians who benefit from seeing these materials go online. Encouraging English Literacy is a HUGE part of what Camp Internet is all about.

Over in California Backcountry we have a lot of original source materials that are no longer available in print that make excellent reading for Native American button , Alta California and Gold Rush History button , as well as popular writers like Mark Twain button and John Muir, as well as important works by the earliest California writers such as Joaquin Miller button and Bret Harte who laid the ground work for all western writers to come. ……... But there are many books you may already have in your library that would compliment these resources and offer even more academic enrichment for the students…. California Indian stories, Gold Rush history and more.

Now, lets move on to our suggested reading lists. Find out from your teachers in Camp Internet what subject they are focused on – Channel Islands, Backcountry or Ancient Southwest. Then study the list pertaining to their subject below. You can cut and paste this list from the chat room into a word document today and then go back to your catalog to find what of these you may already have available. If you find enough to create a library display, please let the teachers know so they can send their students in to take advantage of your collection. If you will be ordering books, consider these as suggested titles for future purchases.

To wrap up our first chat session, I would like to suggest your consideration in joining Camp Internet is preparing a collaborative grant application to the California State Library. We plan to send in our Letter of Intent in January, and if your school library would like to be a partner in a grant, we should arrange a time to discuss this by phone in more detail. Our goal with the grant is to get 3-6 schools and their libraries participating in a program that brings Camp Internet to at least 3 classes per school, involves the library and librarian in making materials available, gives each library a new online computer and Camp display materials to encourage campus-wide and family awareness of the program, and provides a book budget to bring related new titles into your permanent collection for display and circulation. The teachers and librarians will all be funded to attend the summer training, and we will develop special online librarian training features year round. If you would like to learn more about this opportunity, please let us know at camp@rain.org, or post a response here in the chatroom.

Welcome to all of you today. Its good to have you taking part in this special learning environment. I have a special note for Librarians and for Teachers who work with their students to develop Library Skills. The Internet has become a vast new global library of Information. Effective use of the Internet comes through skills similar to those needed to use a library. How to Search effectively. How to ask questions that lead to useful answers when in special chat sessions (much like knowing how to ask a reference librarian a question). In the Chat session today we are learning how to find and use part of the Library of resources within Camp Internet. Skills we learn working within Camp will become the skills used for daily Internet activity. As you explore the literature within Camp today think on how you can guide your students to explore within Camp Internet's safe harbor to find literature, art and science materials. And remember the Search link which is on every Camp Internet web. That search tool will take you where you need to go within Camp.

Hello - we'll be checking back in all afternoon 2-5pm to answer any questions you may have ... several schools have RSVP'd for today at different times, so feel free to get started as soon as you arrive and post any questions you may have as you take the virtual literature tour we have prepared for you above.

Judy at NV: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 2:34PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi, Judy and June from North Verdemont here. There's some helpful info posted here already. Are you going to send a packet of info to the librarians about Camp Internet? It would be handy if they could have a little more background info than just what we teachers consider important for them to know. Perhaps they could have their own login for the website?

Judy and June at NV: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 2:38PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Another question: What can we do to help with the grant project for libraries? That sounds like a wonderful plan.

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 2:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Judy and Janet - I am researching how the grant funding is structured to determine how best to apply - I am thinking your school might be asked to be the lead on it since we can jointly stengthen it as the Smithsonian Award recipients - do you think that might be well received ?

Judy and June at NV: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 2:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Marcy, The Smithsonian background certainly couldn't hurt, I wouldn't think. Keep us posted on the developments.

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 2:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Also - getting a packet together for librarians is on a front burner and we aim to do that before fall is out ... if a librarian is interested in really supporting the teacher, we would indeed issue them their own log in. We would need an email sent to camp@rain.org listing their name, school, email etc and then we can issue them the log in / pswd via email to them privately.

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 2:47PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What of our supply kit would be appropriate to write into the grant as a display for the library ? Might not need all of the materials, but certainly some would make a nice display to encourage wider school awareness of the porgram ...

Judy and June at NV: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 3:00PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Marcy, I'm the Librarian asst.at N.V. My E-Mail is June.Diez@sbcusd.k12.ca.us.

Judy and June at NV: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 3:13PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy, I would love to put up a display up in our library Judy suggested, the California Channel Island poster, baskets The Coloring Book of the California Indians and some Brochures for handing out information to teachers and parents.

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 3:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi again - I sent your material and passwd request to our office and they will work on getting the materials out. They are getting ready for CUE next week and we are trying out a never-been-done-before booth that is a 10x20 with a Camp Internet tent and real artifacts - Indiana Jones meets the Internet - Judy, will you be going ?

Judy and June at NV: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 3:23PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy, Judy said, Yes!

Judy and June at NV: . . . . Thu, Nov 2, 3:29PM PST (-0800 GMT)
