Welcome to the Fall Class Project Showcase ....... during the first two weeks of November we will be asking our alumni teachers to post examples of projects they have implemented with their classrooms here in the TEACHERS' CHATROOM for our new teachers to enjoy, and for their fellow alumni to learn from as well......... This is an opportunity to see how a special section of Camp Internet became a classroom focus - either using Camp materials provided or by creating a related project on a Camp theme from their track.... They will welcome your questions a comments .. so check back in during the gallery dates of November 4-13th. Enjoy this peer-to-peer sharing !!!

Janet Gallatin and Lynda Bloomquist teach 4th grade at Madison School in Indio. Last year was our first year to participate in Camp Internet. The study of the Native Americans tied in perfectly with fourth grade social science/history curriculum. We introduced the unit by reading Native American legends: When the Animals Were People and Stories California Indians Told. The Rainbow Bridge provided by Camp Internet was enjoyed by all. The whole class read Island of the Blue Dolphins and compared O'Dell's story with the Lone Woman of Ghalas-at, using Camp Internet's documentation. Our unit of study focused on the geographic regions of California and that the Native Americans were the "keepers of the earth." We used the Native American documentation on Camp Internet to add to our textbook. Camp Internet arranged to have a National Park Ranger from Joshua Tree National Park visit our classrooms to talk about the Cahuilla. She brought artifacts: bows and arrows, spears, sampling of plants, and even pine nuts for the students to eat.

Gallatin/Bloomquist Madison School: . . . . Wed, Nov 8, 7:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The students made replicas of the houses of the Chumush, using cane and rafia. They made tomols using paper patterns. The classes had the opportunity to participate in the chat room activity on cave paintings. The pictures posted were excellent, and the students made their interpretations of cave paintings. This year we will have pictures of the cave paintings we saw on our summer training's field trip.

Gallatin/Bloomquist Madison School: . . . . Wed, Nov 8, 8:00AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Ending our unit of study, we had a "celebration." Each class was a community. We set up our houses and tomols on the playground. The children traded their beads for different items. The children played games that we learned from our training at the S.B. Botanical Gardens.

Hi Campers; Last August I began working with CTAP/SCORE to produce an online problem based lesson for English Language Learners. Of course my first thought was to use Camp Internet as my web based resource. I choose Explorers as my topic and went from there. I did search for some for additional sources for explorers research info on the web, but what I found was text that was much to difficult for my ELL students to deal with. My project is nearing completion and will be loaded on the CTAP/SCORE site for all to use sometime after January. The senario is that the students have been choosen to set us Museum of Exploration (in the classroom) and through research on Camp Internet will gather information, guided through the lesson and come up with an end product for the Museum. Presentations will be made and given to parents and other classrooms will be invited to come into the Museum on it's grand opening. In other words the classroom will be set up like a museum somewhat like a science fair. I plan to video the presentations and share them here. The lesson plans are based strickly upon Blooms Taxonomy and Camp Internet is the center of the research. Just what it is intended to be - supplemental material to match up with my 4/5th grade curriculum and to be used as a library on line. I'll let you know more when it gets fully developed as a website ELL lesson (of course all can use it).

Laurey of Arrowhead: . . . . Thu, Nov 9, 4:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Camp Internet Teachers....Here are a couple of project ideas that my 4th graders loved and worked well as a supplement to the Channel Islands studies. For Red Ribbon Week, we incorporated the legend of the Rainbow Bridge into a drug awareness poster. Untitled "A Rainbow of Reasons to be Drug Free", students wrote poetry and slogans on rainbow and dolphin cutouts to add to the poster. It was beautiful and won school wide recognition. Currently, to add to our Paleontology studies of the pygmy mammoth, students sculpted elephants from clay to represent various extinct relatives of the modern day elephant. It was a great activity for helping students to understand the geologic timeline, an important aspect of our science curriculum and learning about the incredible swimming elephants. Our next project to reinforce crafts and trading of the Chumash is to weave pine needle baskets from the Coulter pines of our area. Pictures of these projects will be posted on my upcoming website and digitals are on their way to camp headquarters so keep your eyes open for them.

Pat...Thank you for the Blue Dolphin Webquest. It is something that I would love to make available to my students. Fellow teachers...I began my school year with my 4th graders using the Honor Simulation which is an Interact language arts project that works very well to supplement the Native American studies with Camp Internet. If anyone is interested, let me know and I will fax a copy to you.

Marcy: . . . . Sat, Nov 11, 1:24PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Laurey et all - How to create the hot link 'button' ? type in the full URL of the site you want to refer to in the body of your message - must have the http://www in front and not be touching anyother letter or punctuation - keep spaces before and after. Then the chat software reads it as a live link and creates the 'button' for you to that web page ..... be careful on linking to images that end in .gif, .jpg, or .tif - these must be scaled to max of 4x4" to work or else they tie up the bandwidth for viewers and the chat won't open for them.

Laurey of Arrowhead: . . . . Sat, Nov 11, 1:32PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I figured out how to add a link...it is sooo easy. Teachers...never forget the magic of copy/paste. Keep sharing those links that support our Camp Internet studies.

Trade Game ........ This is a game made by Mr. Bartlett’s 4th grade class. It is based on Native American trade methods. Feel free to modify the directions to suit your needs....... Object: To be the first team to have 5 of each trade item. ..... Players: Teams of 2-5 people, known as "tribes". ..... Materials: Several groups of 20 trade items and event cards. You can cut the event cards out and glue them to 3x5 cards, then laminate if you like. ...... How to play: Each tribe makes 20 of the same trade items from one of California’s four regions. (ie. shells form coast, hides from the mountain, fruit or roots from central valley, and feathers or arrowheads from the desert.) They can be made from different colored construction paper. It makes it easier if all 20 of each item are the same color though. When this is done, you can begin trading. ........ Teacher shuffles and flips an "event card", which will tell the tribe what to do. Each tribe takes a turn until one tribe has 5 of each trade item. It may take a while, so this is a good game to do the last 15 minutes of the day, or when you may have a few extra minutes. ...... Event cards. Cut them out and glue them on 3x5 cards and laminate.

We held our Community Night October 25 from 6:30-8:00 PM. In addition to our 24 station computer lab we used the District's RRV (Rolling Researchers Vehicle). The RRV is one of two that were provided through a technology grant. The RRVs visit schools on a regular basis and allow 4th and 5th graders to access the Internet. ....................................... During the evenings they will be used for community outreach. Each has 14 student and one teacher workstations. They are also equipped with a large TV for the teacher to use to instruct. Needless to say the students look forward to the RRV's visit every five weeks.

Hi Everyone, This year we are trying something a little different. The science teacher and I have teamed up and are working with the fourth grade classes on the Channel Islands track. She takes half the class for a science experiment related to our Camp Internet studies while I have the other half of the class in the computer lab where we are online with the Camp Internet materials and completing the passport questions, participating in chats, etc. Recently, we visited the dinosaur dig chat archive while the other group was making "fossils" in the science room. We then trade so everyone gets to participate with all the activities. This week we are having fun using the computer to make greeting cards to exchange with our partner class.

Math Teachers....A great geography activity to implement for older elementary students is scale drawings of the islands showing latitude and longitude. Students looked at the aerial view of the islands poster and drew their own smaller scale map. It reinforced measuring and scale drawing for math skills as well as helping students to identify the specific islands. Diana Teeter at our school had some fabulous results this year with her sixth graders. Give it a try!

Hi I am August Kraemer, I teach a Sixth Grade GATE Cluster class at Victoria Elementary School in Riverside, CA. This is my second year with Camp Internet. My website button I also have a Marine Science Website at button Last year my students were able to go to Yosemite. If you are in the California Backcountry this year this is a great field trip for you to try for. I would like to show you the some of the projects my students have completed but my school district does not allow me to post student pictures or work on the internet. My students are working on websites for Ancient Civilizations. They have already completed a powerpoint presentation. We are about to culminate our study on the Stone Age and Early Man with an Archaeological Dig. The Big Dig will take place on November 16th, beginning at 8:45 a.m. and continuing until around 11:00 a.m. with groups sharing after lunch. Students are inventing their own cultures as anthropologists and will excavate a groups' project using knowledge learned from a culture study unit. For those of you in the Ancient Southwest group. I found a sight for the Anasazi. button
