Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Feb 28, 5:08PM PST (-0800 GMT)
…..I would like to start of the Family History Storytelling by sharing the story of an Amazing Woman from my Family’s History, Lorinda Bewley. When the West was first explored by white Americans, their treatment of the Indians was often not very kind or understanding. One of the pioneering missionaries – who came West to convert the Indians to Christianity – were the Whitmans. Narcissa Whitman was the first white woman to cross the Rocky Mountains in 1836. They set up a mission in what is now Walla Walla, Washington and were not successful in converting Indians as they were not able to be understanding of native ways. Marcus Whitman returned to the East when his church told him he would have to close the mission, and he brought back with him the first large contingent of white people into West – 1,000 people in wagon trains. ………………………………………………………….. But these white people brought more than wagon trains ….. they brought diseases that the local native people had no resistance to. The tribe living where Whitman set up his mission were the Cayuse. When a measles epidemic struck both white and Indian children in 1847, many of the white children survived, but nearly none of the Indian children did. This made the Cayuse parents very angry and they suspected Whitman was poisoning them. Filled with rage over the loss of their children – and angry about the number of white people Whitman had brought into the area to settle – a small group of the Cayuse attacked the Whitman Mission and there were only a few survivors of what is now referred to as ‘The Whitman Massacre’, one of the most tragic events in Westward Expansion………………….……………….. My great-great-great-great-great Grandmother Lorinda was at the Mission during the massacre, and she was rescued and protected by one of the Cayuse Indian leaders who had seen her once before and was interested in having her become one of his wives supposedly because he admired her unusual blonde hair. She refused to marry Chief Five Crows, but he kept her for several months in the hopes she would change her mind, treating her kindly and respectfully. Eventually she was rescued by a soldier from a nearby Fort, and later she married that soldier who became by great-great-great-great-great Grandfather………………………… The Cayuse were not to survive the Whitman incident as a tribe – five turned themselves in as a self-sacrifice, knowing they would be executed, and doing so in the name of Jesus who “died to save his people” they said. They hoped that by sacrificing themselves, the whites would not destroy their entire tribe. But the tribe never recovered, and those that still lived, went to live in other tribes in the region. ………. Today the Whitman Mission is a National Historic site with a web site that showcases Missionary and Indian life from the period of first contact. button

Just taking the time to do this and putting in all the effort and energy that she does, makes her an amazing woman at any age, but at her age even more. There are many things that my mother is interested in that she could be doing instead, but my mom choses to come help me(I'm her baby)and gives her time, knowledge and love to all of my students. I think this is very special. I am very lucky and my students are very lucky. Thanks mom :) My mother

I would like to share a story about my grandma. My grandma, Sophie, was born in Odessa, Russia. When she was just 13 years old, her mother had to sneak her onto a ship that set sail for England, and then on to Egypt. She lived in Egypt for about five years before she finally was able to come to America for freedom. In Russia, my grandma was not safe, but in America she could live with the freedoms that were given to all of us by our Constitution. God bless America. We have so many wonderful people from all over the world.

Joe Cook, Parent at Madison: . . . . Thu, Feb 28, 7:55PM PST (-0800 GMT)
ADELINE SOTO COOK …………………… Adeline Soto was my grandmother. She was born in the Wild West town of Wilcox Arizona. Her mother’s name was Bell Haggi and her father’s name was Mariano Soto. Adeline was born about 1888 and had two sisters.

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Feb 28, 7:58PM PST (-0800 GMT)

And thanks to Joan Ward, Janet Gallatin, Lynda Bloomquist, Jessica Rivera, and Gabrielle Jackson - our brave Camp teachers pioneering the Internet !

Joe Cook, Parent at Madison: . . . . Thu, Feb 28, 7:58PM PST (-0800 GMT)
ADELINE SOTO COOK (continued) Mariano and his brother Pablo owned a short distance from the Southern Pacific Railroad tracks along the main street. The area was an important stop in the desert southwest because of the abundant grass that grew in the Wilcox playa (dry lake) and the fact that there was an abundant amount of water not far below the surface. Cattle was the mainstay of this southwest town. The area was known for the excellent grass that grew as high as a horse’s belly. About a days ride to the southeast of Wilcox was the gun-toting town of Tombstone. Arizona was still a wild place even after the turn of the century.

Joe Cook, Parent at Madison: . . . . Thu, Feb 28, 7:59PM PST (-0800 GMT)
ADELINE SOTO COOK (continued) For many years the front of the store read “Soto Brothers” in big black letters above the entrance. They mostly sold dry and canned goods. Adeline would help in the store. One of the things that Adeline would do was to measure out sugar or beans into bag enough to equal a nickel in value. This was important for the Indians since the concept of using money was very new to them. The Soto family would help them by providing goods in a bag that would be equivalent to a single coin. The store traded in some goods from China and some Navajo rugs.

Joe Cook, Parent at Madison: . . . . Thu, Feb 28, 8:00PM PST (-0800 GMT)
ADELINE SOTO COOK (continued) My grandpa Paul Cook arrived in Wilcox around 1900. He met Adeline and the two were soon married. His new father-in-law Mariano took him to trade with him to trade with the local Apache Indians. The Indians respected Mariano. The two men headed off to the mountains where the Indians lived. They were riding their horses up a wash when Paul noticed a man hanging from a tree a quarter mile away. Paul said “Mariano! Mariano! There is a white man hanging in that tree!”

Joe Cook, Parent at Madison: . . . . Thu, Feb 28, 8:00PM PST (-0800 GMT)
ADELINE SOTO COOK (continued) Mariano responded in a calm manner, “I see him. They hung him for a reason. Don’t pay any attention to him and let’s go on about our business.”

Joe Cook, Parent at Madison: . . . . Thu, Feb 28, 8:01PM PST (-0800 GMT)
ADELINE SOTO COOK (continued) And so the two men went on their way, traded with the Indians and went home without any other incidents. On another time Paul saw a real western shoot-out on the main street of Wilcox. One of the men was killed deader than a doornail.

Eduwigis Razo and Jasihel Razol - sorry to hear about your parent's injuries, but glad they are better. Things like this make us realize how important our own family really is ... our parents are like the walls and roof of the homes we live in - they protect us as we grow up ..... and keep us safe ....

Joe Cook, Parent at Madison: . . . . Thu, Feb 28, 8:01PM PST (-0800 GMT)
ADELINE SOTO COOK (continued) Soon Paul and Adeline had their first son Paul. The second son John Cook (my father) was born in 1916. The Cook family moved from Wilcox in about 1910 and started a store in Calexico California. This store was also a dry goods store like the one in Wilcox

#12...Even though I do not have any women in family who have been remembered for some reason like,an amazing painting or agreat deed that helpd society, the most amazing woman in my family would have to be my mom.My mom is an amazing woman because, she has put up surprising well with the many hardships that my family has been thourgh like,my dad being in medical school while my 18 month old sister is growing up,not finishing collage in time to get a "professenmal" job,not even being able to live in more than a 1 bedroom apartment and I'm not even going to mention the trobles that she is going though with her family. So as you can probably see why I think my mom is an amazing woman.
