Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 8:57AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Welcome to the Remote Access AStronomy Chat - we are going to learn about the use of a remote telescope that can take pictures of bright stars and send them to our desk top computers. Cool Science! Our guest today is Erin O'Connor, an instructor with Alan Hancock College who has worked with the RAAP telescope.

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 9:03AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Camp ASTRONOMY resources are located at button with a feature on the RAAP Project at button . Mr. O'Connor has provided a detailed instruction lesson at button When you hve found a star's coordinates - you can send in an image request WITH YOUR TEACHER'S HELP at button Brightest stars this time of year are Sirius, Canopus, Capella, Rigel, Betelgeuse, Aldebaran, Pollux, Adhara, and Castor because they are most visible in January and February. .. And you can find their coordinates at button ........ Be sure to email the page you get back with your image file's name to camp@campinternet.net so we can help get the image to you in February. Have fun !

Hello Albin & Andrew, There is no air in space becauses air is an artifact of our planet Earth. Volcanic processes and other biological and chemical interactions produce air. Some planets, like Mercury, don't have any air. Other planets, like Venus and Mars, have air, but we wouldn't be able to breath it. There is no oxygen. Only the Earth has oxygen.

Hello Gladys, You ask if Astronomy is hard? Actually, it's not any harder than anything else you might be learning. What happens is that at your age, you start learning about space and stars and planets, and as time goes on, you learn so much that you know more about these things than most other people. It seems hard to others, but in fact, since you learned it over a long time, it's easy. I hope you continue to learn about astronomy.

Hi Maria, This is an exciting time in astronomy because the technology has just advanced to the point where they can discover planets around other stars. Stars are like our sun, just very far away. Some have have planets around them, but only now are our telescopes and other scientific instruments good enough to find them. They have now discovered dozens of extra solar planets, as they are called.

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 9:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Fenny, The sun is a star, and other stars are suns. It may seem strange, but it's true. Stars are simply suns that are very very far away, and so look like tiny twinkles, but if you were to go on a rocket to a star, it would be a sun bigger than our own. Some stars are suns so big that if the Earth were in orbit around them, they would actually inside of them.

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 9:45AM PST (-0800 GMT)
HI Nam, Black holes are stars too. They are stars that are so big, that their gravity is so strong, that the light can't escape. It falls back to the star. We then can't see the light and it looks like a "black hole".

Hi Alejandra-Clarissa-Richard-George, Stars are suns like our sun, and are very hot (over 6000 degrees celsius at the surface). Plants are large rocks in space so big that people like us can live on them. Some planets can be very different though. Jupiter, for example, is a giant ball of gas with no surface. You could never land on the surface because there isn't one.

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 9:49AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yes Daniel, David, Lisa, Frances, our sun will run out of energy some day, and then will no longer produce light. This is not for a very long time, so I wouln't worry to much about it for now. Our sun has enough fuel to burn for another five billion years. That's as long as the sun and Earth have existed to date.

hi David and Kevin, The sun is hot because it undergoes nuclear fusion, the same thing that happens in a nuclear hydrogen bomb. Every second 600 million tons of Hydrogen undergoes nuclear fusion. That's allot of nuclear bomb going off at once. That makes the sun very hot and gives off light.

Hi AMBER/STEPHANIE/HOOVER1/MRS.SCHOENFELD, You asked home many stars I have counted. Not nearly as many as there are up in the sky. You see, the haze of the Milky Way, which you can see from really dark areas (not from in the city), is cased by millions and millions of stars, so many of them, you can't even see that they are indevidual stars. In fact, if you could count the stars just in our very own galaxy, it would take you over 6000 years counting a star every second. That's just for our own galaxy. Our neighboring galaxy, the Andromeda galaxy, has so many stars it would take 9000 years to count them all. Of course, there are billions and billions of galaxies out there, each having so many stars it would take thousands of years to count them.

We know that NASA has sent probes to Jupiter to learn about its compositional makeup. You mentioned that Jupiter's surface is mainly gas and with no solid surface. How is this information verifed when no one has actually been there? Didn't scientists once believe that since the moon is millions of years old that the amount of dust accumulated be several feet high, yet, when astronauts landed on the moon, they found out that the dust was only a few inches deep?

Is there life in Mars?

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Ingrid,Mrs.Ziazie's class, You asked what shooting stars are made of. Shooting stars are not really stars. They look like a star falling from the sky, but thats only an illusion. In fact, they are just a grain of sand that has fallen to Earth from outer space. The grain of sand is traveling so fast, that it causes a streak of light accross the sky. Sometimes, the particles are bigger than a grain of sand they if they are the size of a baseball or larger, they can hit the Earth. Only about two a day ever make it to the Earth. If you are really luck some day, perhaps you will see one land nearby.

Who discoverd the constellations in the sky and what year?

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:17AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Stephanie, Is there life on Mars? A few decades ago, there was alot of speculation that there were martions on Mars. Now that we have landed spacecraft on Mars, we don't think there are Martians anymore, however, there is the posability that life did once exist on the Martian surface, long ago, when Mars had an atmosphere and more water. Someday, we will walk on the surface and look for ancient fossils. Until then, we just don't know for sure.

Who discoverd all of the black holes in the sky ?

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:18AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Ingrid, Constelations are groupings of stars that many ancient cultures in the past have created. Each culture has their own names for the different shapes of star paterns you can imagine. Therefore, constelations go way back many thousands of years.

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:19AM PST (-0800 GMT)

#1 Why did you want to become a astronomer? #2 Do you like being a astronomer? #3 Is it fun being an astronomer? #4 How do you become a famous astronomer? #5 Do you have to work all the time if you're an astronomer?

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:21AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Ingrid, Black holes can never be seen, so their discovery was just theoretical at first. Now though, there seems to be evidence for actual Black Holes. What astronomers look for, is not the black hole itself, but the x-ray radiation from nearby stars and debree that is being sucked into the Black hole. They now think that many if not most galaxies have supermassive black holes at their centers - including our own galaxy.

Hi Aleida, Being an astronomer is fun. I am not actually an astronomer, but rather, an astronomy educator. Actual astronomers spend most their time reaseaching at big telescpoes and working for large universities on big important projects. Yes it's alot of fun, and yes it's alot of hard work, but work doesn't seem like work if you are having fun.

Was Galileo the one that invented astronomy?

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Stephanie, There is no single person who discovered shooting stars becaue they are easily seen and ancient peoples have seen them for thousands of years. Now, understanding what shooting stars were, that came much later, only in the last century or so. Many people have contributed to the understanding of meteors. It's not just one person.

StephanieD,Mrs.Ziazie's class,Marvin Ave.: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:28AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Why do we have astonomy? Is it important?

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Laura, The north star is so important because, as the Earth rotates (spins on its axes), it is the only star that doesn't move or change it's position. That means that sailors in the old days before fancy electronic equipment, could use the north star to navigate, to find their way in the oceans. Unfortionately, you have to have good weather to navigate by the north star, and when you need to know where you are the most, is when it's cloudy and foggy. Now they have satalite tracking systems called GPS units that can pinpoint your location very accurately.

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Laura, Astronomy is important because it helps us understand the universe we live in. Someday, we will travel and live on other planets. Astronomy is helping us learn how to do this.

#1-Keppler's laws indicate that the Earth's orbit around the sun is ellipsoid. Our question is about the shape od this ellipse. Is it almost like a circle or is it more flat? What is the distance, in km, between the foci of the eclipse?

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Mrs.Ziazie's class, A good question. Although it is technically an elipse, it is so closely circular, that you wouldn't be able to tell if looking at the orbit from a distance.

Mrs.Ziazie's class,Marvin Ave.: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
#1-There are many didderent types of masses floating around the sun. What are the criteria that such a mass is considered a planet? Is Pluto still considered a planet? #2-What is the definition of an asteroid?

Mr. O'Connor: . . . . Tue, Jan 29, 10:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
There was a big argument a few years back as to if Pluto should be considered a Planet. Pluto won the argument, and is now officially a planet. The criteria seems to be that it's an object in a nearly circular orbit that orbits the sun.
