Good Evening Carl - the wireless technology is very exciting. I have seen students, once they are working on a wireless portable computer able to move around school, attend to lessons and really grow in their literacy and technology skills. Can you tell us a bit about the setup where you are?

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Here is the Nemophila!! button and you cn learn more at UC Berkeley's plant database button

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Nemophila .. does it look the same? This was taken in Sonoma CA

Carl, Camp Trainer: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:47PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Regarding the wireless setup here at NAISEF, I'd like to introduce Robert Baldree of Tamsco.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:48PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Good evening Robert. Please tell us a bit about what Tamsco provides for schools and communities

Robert, from TAMSCO: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi there, We have put together a wireless network here at the Convention Center in Albuquerque to support the AESIS Science Fair. We have a small satellite dish up on the roof, connected to a wireless bridge (which is beaming the signal about 200 yards and through several walls and windows), which is then connected to a Wireless Access Point providing access to 22 computers and associated equipments...

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
.... Here is an important ancient city in Mexico that our students study in the Ancient Southwest track - PAQUIME - it was the LARGEST city in the Southwest and a major trade hub. Parrots from the southern tropical jungles were brought up and raised there, copper bells and turquoise from Arizona and New Mexico were brought there for trade, and sea shells were stored there out in the middle of the desert, far from the sea. All trade items linking North and Central America - learn more at button

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:52PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Robert - how did the bookmobile set up go in Las Cruces ? We are also experimenting with mobile training units. Hello to Fletcher too!

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:54PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Robert - do schools need to get specific types of cards or access points to work with your system ? Is it very difficult to get the wireless cards to install in computers. Recently we were installing Sony cards in Vaio computers and had a lot of problems with the cards not being recognized by the computers.

Robert, from TAMSCO: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:55PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The installation went well, have some interesting stories about it... Had to create a new type mount to transport the dish between sites, was accused of trying out for Junkyard Wars... They were able to set up at several sites, getting good signal everywere!

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:56PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Robert - do you have any schools or communities setting up wireless networks for access to local BBS systems designed specifically for local use as opposed to accessing the Internet.

Mrs. Rivera/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:56PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We cant find Goldfields in the Bekley database. Can you find a picture somewhere else?

Robert, from TAMSCO: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:58PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We work with a variety of cards and devices. Lots of fun playing with the combinations... We are using Lucent PCMCIA cards, several different varieties. Have also worked with Cisco stuff. Recognition between devices can be difficult, but it is improving...

Robert, from TAMSCO: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 6:59PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Actually yes, we are working with some Alaska schools to help them distribute their satellite service wirelessly to community systems, this is possible because of a recent rule reversal by the FCC (which controls erate spending uses)

: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:02PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We were planting the radishes and they were growing and growing.Yesterday we went outside and pulled out weeds . We are hoping to plant peanuts and to plant flowers too.

Mrs. Burke/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:03PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Does anyone have an official definition of "heirloom seeds." My first grade class has harvested their pumpkin seeds and is ready to place them in their hand painted (pen and watercolor) seed packets. I have access to California seed law for labeling, but am wondering if we can package them as "Heirloom."

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:03PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Mrs. Rivera - do any of the parents from Mexico recognize this plant ? ... .... I am trying to grow a field of it as its appears to be gopher resistent, drought resistent - and blooms in the middle of winter here !

Mrs. Rivera/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:06PM PST (-0800 GMT)
José's dad used to work at a nursery but he doesn't remember the names of the plants. He apreciates plants a lot though, and is excited recognizing plants online.

Robert, from TAMSCO: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:07PM PST (-0800 GMT)
As far as local BBS's are concerned, the term more in vogue is WAN or perhaps VPN connectivity. These configurations allow users to share data and information within the network that is not necessarily available outside that network. This can be accomplished with wired/wireless/satellite based (or even mixed) networks...

Mrs. Rivera/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:07PM PST (-0800 GMT)
MY parents are recognizing the plant, but don't remember the name. They are searching their memory bank :)

Mrs. Burke/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:07PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Is it possible to make the same dye indicator as Bromothymal blue by boiling red cabbage (I assume it would be at a lower concentration if it works)?

Mrs. Rivera/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:08PM PST (-0800 GMT)
THey say that that plant grows by lakes and around marshy areas. Bees like them a lot. José's dad would trap the bees in the flower.

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)
... Here is what I found on Goldfields at Berkeley - button - it is a great database!

Mrs. Rivera/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Jose's mom says that she believes that they have a lot of nectar. She thinks they come in other colors. Do they? Purple? Yellow? What is the plant? It looks like Jimson weed or moonflower.

Mrs. Burke/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:10PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Would Jose's dad trap the bees for bee keeping? ?Agaran los abejas para la cajitas para miel?

NATHANAEL, from the Internet Cafe: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:11PM PST (-0800 GMT)
what can i learn from science

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:11PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The flower I posted is Datura - also known as Jimson Weed. It has toxic properties so isn't for children's gardens, but grows wild by the road side - and - was part of many Shamanistic rituals including possibly rock art drawings.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:11PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Heirloom Seeds are seeds which have a record of use. Many of the seeds in the Camp garden are traced by to gardens on the east coast in the late 1700's. Because gardeners have kept seeds for generations it was possible, once we all began to recognize the need to ensure options to genetically treated seeds, to find sources of seeds which people had actual records of use of. Heirlooms are always open-pollinated varieties. This means that if the seeds produced from the plant are properly saved, they will produce the same variety year after year. This cannot be done with hybrids, which are a cross between two separate varieties, as the seed produced from those plants will either be sterile, or start to revert back to the parent plants. The next part of the definition starts to get a little fuzzy. Most gardeners agree that heirloom varieties should be at least 50 years old

Mrs. Rivera/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:12PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Our principal, Mr. Torres was in here for a while. He was looking up some scientific names for us. He was also looking for the names in Spanish/English.

NATHANAEL, from the Internet Cafe: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:13PM PST (-0800 GMT)
what can science teach us about our future?

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:15PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Nathanael - one of the most interesting things you can learn from science is that there really are few HARD facts in science - it is a world of questioning, inquiring, considering, and drawing conclusions. For example - how do scientists know what color dinosaurs were? They develop a hypothesis, but in reality, there is no way to know for sure...... Yet the ideas of science spill over into art, film, literature and our view of the world. An excellent film about the power of scientific thinking is called MIND WALK - we recommend it if you want to consider the impact of studying science.

Mrs. Burke/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:15PM PST (-0800 GMT)
FYI, Mrs. Rivera has an outstanding display of her classrooms garden and science projects on our district's web site. smbsd.k12.ca.us Check it out! I stole her ideas for the kids making seed packets and packaging seeds harvested from our garden. I'll be borrowing the plant trading cards lesson next!

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Nathanael - science can offer us models for what the future can hold. Science does not control the future, nor do people alone... but it is people who stand to harm the ecosystem and it is we ourselves who may not bring the best future we could have. Science helps us envision, test, and sample what the future could be - both positive and negative. Then we can choose which future we want to realize and work towards that. Who do you think the scientsits were are in aboriginal or prehistoric societies?

: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
How long have you been working with flowers.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:21PM PST (-0800 GMT)
RE: how long have you been working with flowers?: The Camp Internet Garden is two years old. We have many flowers we've been growing for the past 15 years which are now a regular part of the garden.

Jose, su mamá y su papá/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Si pues nosotros jugabamos com las abejas adentro de las frores, Pero aya las flores son de colores

Elizabeth daughter of teacher at taylor elementary school in santa maria california: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We were thrilled with the seed packets which our school has designed, packaged and have for sale in our school office.

borja/taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:23PM PST (-0800 GMT)
My class has planted Barrel Cactus seeds. They are now sprouting. The students are very excited to see how these cacti start out as tiny 2 leaf sprouts.

Mrs. Rivera/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:24PM PST (-0800 GMT)
José's dad says he trapped the bees as a child, because the trumpet shape of the flower let them trap it easily

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:25PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Mrs Rivera and Mrs Burke - I just visited the district web site and toured Mrs. Rivera's gardening pages - great presentation. We would like to mirror it over on Camp Internet as an adjunct to our gardening resources - we will email about that soon!

Nathanael, from Gallup, New Mexico: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:25PM PST (-0800 GMT)
what would be the most important thing that we can learn from ourselves through science?

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:26PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Borja - send us some photos of the cactus sprouts. I've had questions from a number of students on how to get cactus going. We'd like to post a bit about how you have started and tended the seeds.

borja/taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:26PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Last year my class planted a California Redwood in a barrel. We are planning to plant it at the new Taylor School site in the fall. I am a fourth grade teacher so the choice of the redwood was certainly an appropriate choice of tree.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:28PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Borja - tree planting is a wonderful thing to do. We began a fruit tree orchard for the Camp garden which let us plant 15 new trees.

Nathanael, from Gallup, New Mexico: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:28PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Can anyone answer my question? if you can't then rephrase that to what did science teach you about yourself?

Nathanael, from Gallup, New Mexico: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:29PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Or what can science teach you about yourself?

Hannah daughter of teacher from taylor school in santa maria california: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:31PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hannah is a kindergartener and was so excited about the wonderful barrels representing each letter of the alphabet that the teachers at taylor elementary have designed. She thought that it was so great that all of the plants in each barrel had names that began with that letter of the alphabet. But, she is wondering if you could show her a picture of a "beautiful flower" that begins like her name Hannah. Is there a flower that starts with an H that she could add to our H planter? Could you send us a picture? Thank you Hannah and her mom.

Mrs. Rivera/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:31PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Mrs. Borja had to leave, but she I know a little bit about how she sprouted the barrel cactus seeds. She sprinkled the seeds into some soil in a baggie. Moistened the soil, loosely closed the bag and put the bag on the windosill. I don't think she did anything else, but I will ask her tomorrow.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:32PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Nathanael - science allows you to learn about yourself on so many levels. In one very important sense, science allows you to study and understand yourself as part of a much larger system. My work with science has allowed me to understand my role in the larger web of life and opened ways to study and work with parts of that 'web of life' which are important to me.

Mrs. Rivera/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:32PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Mrs. Borja's students have been preparing the soil for the garden this month and they dis a wonderful job. They made mounds to plant the three sisters and they have river rocks with Chumash paintings on bordering their garden. They also have an arbor and a scarecrow. I can send pictures tomorrow.

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:34PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Nathanael - you are asking some great thought-provoking questions! A scientist already ! I will offer a possible answer to the question of what we can learn from ourselves through science............ Clearly one of the greatest challenges in science - and life on earth - today, is to re-learn how to live in balance with the ecosystem. We can study successful examples of Native American and other tribal peoples who have practiced an honorable relationship to the earth. .......But science also can allow us to study the mistakes of previous generations. For example - on Crete in the Mediterranean, there once florished a magnificent neolithic and bronze age culture we call the Minoans who created incredible buildings, murals, pottery, sailing vessels, agriculture and more ........ but these same people depleted the entire forest on the island inorder to support their life style - to melt ore for bronze, to fire their pottery and so on. This lead them to raid other peoples forests on distant shores searching for more and more fuel....... So, rather than just admire their great art and architecture (archaeology) , science also helps us identify the problems they brought on themselves when they depleted their natural resources....... This is a lesson we can stand to learn from today don't you think?

Mrs. Rivera/Taylor: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:35PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Hannah, Elizabeth and Laurie :) I am glad you could be with us from home tonight.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Mar 21, 7:37PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Mrs. Rivera - I look forward to seeing the pictures and posting them. Send to camp@campinternet.net. Sounds like really great work the kids are doing. We prepared 4 mounds today for three sisters - makes a beautiful part of the garden. We're doing the mounds this year instead of putting in new planter boxes.
