How long has Rock Art been around?
Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The earliest rock art sites date to approximately 30,000 years ago in
France. The oldest traces of painting on rocks dates to approximately
100,000 years ago in southern Africa.
Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
How did the people make the colors they used foor Rock Art?
Mr. Hyder Answers Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Rock art pigments are derived mostly from natural materials. Red
ochre is an iron oxide the runs from yellow to a deep red. White may
be made from shells, gypsum, or clay deposits. Black is typically
charcoal. Other minerals produce blues and some plant material
produces blues and blacks.
Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Who invented Rock Art?
Mr. Hyder answers Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:48AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We do not know when people first painted on rocks, but it is most
likely a product of modern human behavior. Probably the best answer
is that "we" invented rock art.
Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:48AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Where are the oldest cave paintings located?
Mr. Hyder answers Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:49AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We have early dates from southern Africa, France, Australia, India,
and South America. Rock art seems to appear with the appearance of
modern humans.
Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:49AM PST (-0800 GMT)
What is the difference between a pictograph and a pictoglyph?
Mr. Hyder answers Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:50AM PST (-0800 GMT)
A pictograph is a painting added to rock. A petroglyph is a removal
of rock to produce a design.

Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:53AM PST (-0800 GMT)
What is bas relief?
Mr. Hyder answers Elderberry Students: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Most petroglyphs involve removing rock from the area of the design so
that it is visible (such as removing dark rock surface to expose the
lighter interior rock. A bas relief involves removing rock from
around the design so it stands out above the surrounding rock surface
rather than being cut into the surface,
Antonio at Elderberry : . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:55AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Why were petoglyphs made?
Mr. Hyder : . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:55AM PST (-0800 GMT)
That is the question that intrigues archaeologists. We do not know
why any one petroglyph was made except to say that it is something
that humans do. In some cases we know that rock art was made to mark
territory, to commemorate events, to honor ancestors, etc, but most
rock art likely relates to the religious beliefs of the artists and
their society.
Antonio at Elderberry : . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:56AM PST (-0800 GMT)
What do the designs mean?
Mr. Hyder : . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:56AM PST (-0800 GMT)
There are very few cases where we know what the artist meant when
they created their art. In some case we know that a design is a bear
or snake or deer or even a bow and arrow, but the artist might have
meant them to represent some other thought or belief.
Camp Internet Rock Art Explorers: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)

Daniel at Elderberry: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
What is the difference between a statue that you can move and a
statue that you can not move?
Mr. Hyder : . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 6:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
A free standing statue is know as portable art (if small). It may not
be found where it was created because it can be carried and traded. A
fixed statue would be an example of bas-relief art and is necessarily
located at the place it was created.
Daniel at Elderberry : . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 7:00AM PST (-0800 GMT)
How can you tell Indian art work from cave art?
Mr. Hyder : . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 7:00AM PST (-0800 GMT)
They are one and the same unless you are asking how to distinguish
the art of one culture or time from the art of another culture or
time. For the latter, we use a concept called style that assumes
different people at different times produce art that is more
consistent with others from the same people and time than that of
other peoples and times. Styles are not always that distinct. For
example, American coins have former presidents on their "heads" side
and Canadian coins have the queen of England. These are two different
styles of coins. A thousand years from now, people may not know the
difference between the queen and a president and they might view the
coins as being of one style, that of having the head of a person of
the "heads" side.

Are the large figures in Peru - Nasca - considered rock art ? Or only images on walls or in caves?
Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 9:06AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I have seen painted hand prints that were made by children, but I do not know if children reguraly made rock art. My guess is that they did not on a regular basis.
Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 9:10AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Some rock art pictures clearly show animals being hunted, trapped, shot with arrows or darts, and some show what is probably dead animals. We cannot always tell if the pictures are meant to be records of a hunt or if they are meant to bring success in a hunt or if they represent something else besides hunting. One researcher said that paintings of animals show that they were good to think as well as eat.
It is easy to believe that animals in rock art represent hunting magic, but people are more complicated than what they eat. Animals represent many things when used in art.

Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 9:18AM PST (-0800 GMT)
It was popular many years ago to speculate that rock art represented aliens or astronauts. We are attracted to that idea because the images are not always familiar to us. If our culutre was not capable of space travel, we would not interpret these images as aliens. It is an attractive idea, but prehistoric people were painting images familiar to their own cultures and beliefs.
Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 9:19AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The Nasca and other ground figures fall into the things studied by archaeologists interested in rock art.
Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 9:22AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The most common color in rock art is red. Red pigment, an iron oxide, bons easily with the rock and erodes slowly. Because it is a mineral pigment, it does not fade in sunlight like dyes and other things we use to create colors. If minerals faded, there would be no color in the earth. That is why paintings last so long.
Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 9:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yes, families are shown in rock art or we believe they are families. Sometimes, images are clearly male and female from the parts of the body shown and smaller figures are shown with larger figures. We assume these are families although they may be just a group of people. Where I work in the Southwest, hand prints of different sizes are painted next to house room. They appear to be the hand prints of the parents and children living in the house.
Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 9:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yes, girls painted rock art. We cannot tell just by looking at the art who painted it, but in Southern California, we know that young girls painted rock art and the end of ceremonies celebrating their passage from girl to woman. We even know specific rocks that were painted by the girls. Using these images as a model, we assume that rocks with similar images were also painted by girls. Without this ethnographic information, we would have no way to really tell who painted them.

Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 9:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We know that the Maya made rock art and there is rock art in the area of the Moundbuilders that appears to portray legends associated with the Moundbuilders and image found in other Moundbuilder art. There are not as many possible places to find rock art as in the west, so there are fewer sites. When people had no rocks, they made their art in other ways (like building effigy mounds).

The best way to protect rock art is through education. That is one reason I do these chats. Most destruction of rock art comes through ignorance of its value and importance to the people whose culutres created the art. the national and state parks are working to find better ways to educate and monitor people visiting rock art sites. And groups like the American Rock Art Research Association are working with teachers throughout the country to help build education programs about rock art.

Females created rock art in Australia and there are a few mentions of their work in some books. Australian society has rules about males and females sharing knowledge. Since most archaeologists and anthropologists over the years have been male, not much was recorded about female ceremonial activities. That has changes with more female scientists, but there is still little published out of respect for the cultures who have shared their religious secrets.

Creating rock art is something that humans do. In North America, the native peoples are who you call Indians. They made the rock art. Settlers from Europe made some rock art during the Civil War and at other times, but it was for different purposes that the native inhabitants. Rock art is made everywhere in the world where there are rocks and people. If your family is from Europe, uour ancestors made rock art. If your family is from Africa, they made rock art. If from China, Japan, or othe Asian countries, your ancestors made rock art as well.

The Nasca lines are made by moving dark rocks to expose the lighter soil under the rocks. Creating the designs required engineering knowledge, but the Nasca people were just like us even if they did not have computers. Most of the figures are lines that point to mountains. The could stand at high spots and help ensure the lines ran straight. Ceremonies honoring the mountains are still performed in some villages, although they are now incorporated into Catholic ceremonies.

Question:
Do you know of any rock art in the VEntura/Ojai/Oak View Areas?
Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 9:57AM PST (-0800 GMT)
There are only a few ceremonies that we know involved the creation of rock art. The rest we assume from where the art is located and what is shown. Without direct ethnographic information, we do not really know for sure. We know art was created as part of fertility ceremonies, for rain making, for healing, for vision quests, and probably for many other ceremonial reasons. As we move farther into the past where there are no written records, we have nothing that survives of ceremonies besides the rock art, so we are really guessing no matter how well constructed our ideas.

I'm trying keep up and have a list of your questions. I'll do my best to get to them all.
We know that rock art was made before the Spanish came to California. I do not know that the Chinese made rock art before the Spanish came. I know there is evidence for Chinese junks visiting California and it is possible that they did so. I have not seen any rock art myself that i would say in indeed a Chinese junk.
There is a lot of rock art in China and the first book to mention rock art was published in China over 1,000 years ago. They were already speculating about what older rock art might mean. We are still unable to answer that question.

There are sailors in rock art on Easter Island, Hawaii, and Australia. There are probably sailors elsewhere, but I have not seen articles about them. There are pictures of kite fliers in Hawaii and there are pictures that might be surfers. Sometimes you have to use your imagination and wonder about what you might be seeing. Rock art is as important for what we think about it today as it was for the people who originally made it.
Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 10:04AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Easter Island is in the South Pacific. The most isolated island with living people on the planet.
Bill Hyder: . . . . Tue, Nov 18, 10:07AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Rock art is sometimes found in very high places. I speculate that the artists wanted it to be seen from a long distance. In some cases you can still climb to where the art is located (not a good idea unless you know how to climb mountains). In some cases the ledges that reached the site are gone. In some cases, sand dunes or even house structures used to rest against the wall and allowed people to reach the height safely. In Baja California, the artists painted with long poles to create very large paintings, high on cave walls.

Rock art is very popular all around the world and becomes more popular as people learn more about it. Unfortunately, visiting sites creates pressures that lead to the destruction of the art and very few people still create rock art. Today, people create their art on canvases, in books, in scultptures, etc.
Many countries now have laws to protect the art. In our country, people have been sent to jail for damaging art, they have been made to pay to repair the damage they have done, and they have been fined as a punishment.

Some of your questions have touched on meaning we know or think we know about rock art that I have not yet mentioned.
Some researchers think that dots may represent calendars. In some cases, the dots run inrows and match moon counts. One site in the Southwest is called moon house for a painting of crescents leading up to a full circle and then back down to crescents again. The count matches the phases of the moon.
In other sites, human figures carry shields and weapons. They are painted in areas where wars occurred and they seem to repesent the period of warfare. People created art about the things that worried them or were important to them. Periods of conflict and war likely saw an increase in rock art.

It is hard to answer questions about the most popular tribes or the most favorite rock art sites. Different people like different things. My favorites tribes and sites are the Chumash because that is where I first learned about rock art. People that work elsewhere have different favorite tribes and sites. I am most interested in who we are as human beings and why we want to create art. Art began with the first moder humans and it probably means that we want to communicate our thoughts and beliefs with one another. Although prehistoric artists create art for different purposes from today's artists, their motivation likely comes from the same place in what makes us human. If you like to draw, why do you like to draw (or paint or create other art)?
