Camp Internet is made up of many different classes or study units, such as the Channel History, Ancient Southwest, GATE, American History, and Global Garden units. It is good to take a look at each area on occasion as you will often find your students will benefit by using more than one area of Camp. The GATE class web provides one of the best ways to explore a broad range of Camp resources including our special units on Meterology, Oceans Studies, GIS and others. Goto: button for just a few minutes right now and take a look at what areas of Camp Internet are covered by that class.

Many of our students are getting involved in the PGI Project - a new special study unit on Non-Violent Gaming. The class studies video and computer games and looks at the real possibility for non-violent games to take on as much of a role in the gaming world as the many very violent games we see on the market today. Goto: button to explore that class web.

Jessie Armacost: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:35AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi am I a teacher from Noble Elementary and I am at the Camp Internet training. I have enjoyed learning about about the camp internet. I am concerned that some of the wording is very high for my class of English Language learners. Do you have any suggestions?

Rozalind Benson: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:35AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi-I'm Rozalind a fourth grade teacher from Noble Elementary. The majority of my students are English Language Learners. Do you have any recommendations on how Camp Internet can be used along with them?

Rachelle Hubert, Noble: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:36AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi-- I'm Rachelle Hubert from Noble Avenue Elementary. Camp Internet is a great concept and I'm especially excited about the possibility of incorporating it within my own classroom. However, my question to you is how do we implement the program when we have many other mandates such as Open Court, science, and math? After all, there are crazy yearly pacing plans that we must follow. Perhaps during the afternoon hour that we're allowed to squeeze in art, social studies, science, and music? Any ideas? After all, Camp Internet is a great idea that I'd love to implement.....

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:37AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Chat sessions are an important part of Camp giving students and teachers a way to meet the people who help create the content. The Professionals working out in the field in many different Science and Education areas. This summer we will begin a series of chat sessions with High School students and teachers in Nepal. Camp Internet is taking part in a wireless Internet project linking 5 villages in Nepal with students in the U.S. The next scheduled chat will be announced in your weekly News. Providing connectivity - a way to get on the Internet, for schools and villages is an important part of what Camp Internet does. In the U.S. we provide Internet for Camp teachers who need dial up access for $10 month.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Ann Boulet - Civil War studies are an important part of the American History course with a new unit on "the Civil War upto the Industrial Revolution" comming online this summer.

tonyamandl, charnockrd: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello, my name is Tonya from Charnock Rd. Elementary school. There are so many great programs, I can't decide which to focus on!

: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi, This is a really wonderful learning experience for me I am a fifth grade teacher at Charnock Road Elementary in Los Angeles. What I am enjoying most about this training is working with other teachers from Charnock. We are having a great time learning and guiding each other along the way.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hannah - you can find a lot of links to our different Science units in the GATE class web at; button and email me at rain@rain.org and I"ll give you some special links to science units as they come online.

tonyamandl, charnockrd: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Do you have to participate in a complete program, or can you use parts of several? I'll be teaching 5th next year, and definitely want to do the American history, but I also want to students to do some of the science and cultural sections of California Backcountry, as well as Global Gardens (I do gardening at my school).

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Rozaline - check our our ESL web - it may be of value to your english language learners - goto: button

Kristin Ulrich: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The reason I had asked about the availability of the American History exploration is that during the training, the focus was on the Back Country and the Channel Islands. When I tried to go into the American History trail, many of the topics wouldn't open.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Tony - it is a very good idea to use parts of several programs within Camp. The GATE and the Homeschool webs will both give you sets of study links that go through all the different parts of Camp Internet, for science, history, art, literature and reading.

Anna: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Anna, Noble...Thank you, I am looking froward to reading about the Civil War.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:48AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Kristin - the American History unit is getting a new set of units and student tools and will have some changes taking place for about one more week. During the summer you will be able to practice working through almost all the parts of the course that will be available in the Fall. We are trying to put an emphasis on Civics and Elections studies during the summer but in the Fall the regular menu will go online of full American History from pre-discovery up through contemporary studies.

leaf3: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:50AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Jessie i would scaffold the research/projects 4example i would have a lesson on extracting content vocabulary, the top 20 valuable vocabulary words, students can determine after research which works are essential in studying (topic) may include a visual or poem that incorporates some of the vocabulary which can also be put into categories by parts of speech or plant, animal .. ..... D) .......

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:50AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I would like to encourage planning student participation as you think about Camp during the summer. We have several student areas that allow for youth involvement that expand the scope of the technology experience for students during the year. The Kids News Net is a monthly newletter published by Camp students. There will also be a student Video Journal that will be produced during the next school year with regular digital video programming designed by students.

Kristin Ulrich: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:51AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thanks for the info... I'm leaving the chat room now...good afternoon.

Timothy Tyndall - Director - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 11:52AM PST (-0800 GMT)

Wonderful to hear about your school garden. I was working in the Camp Internet garden this morning - great corn, chilies and squash this summer with a substantial bean crop as well. Will you be taking part in the Globa Garden class next year?

Marcy Montgomery, Ed Dir Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:31PM PST (-0800 GMT)
A Big Camp Internet welcome to Faye Powe - our guest from the Smithsonian who will answer questions about the George Catlin exhibit now at the Museum of the American West.

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello! I'm looking forward to talking with you.

Marcy Montgomery, Ed Dir Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:39PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Faye - everyone is logging in so they can post their comments or questions ...

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:40PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi! Looking forward to talking about Catlin!

Marcy Montgomery, Ed Dir Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:41PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Faye - what is your background ? and role with this specific exhibit?

KUlrich: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi, Faye. I'm Kristin Ulrich, a teacher at Noble Avenue Elementary School. Did Catlin have any criticism of the Native Americans?

Kelley Charnock Road: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Good afternoon, the city must be very solemn right now where you are. I teach 4th grade at an LAUSD school. I found the picture of Catlin's son amusing and something my students could identify with. Are there other people in his family with similar paintings in Indian regalia?

Kelley Charnock Road: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:43PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I mean his nephew...not his son

maureen noble ave. elementary: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
My name is Maureen Mickool and I am a special education teacher for 4th and 5th grade students at Noble Ave. Elem. We went to the Gene Autry Museum, at first I thought looking at portraits of Native American's would be boring. To my surprise, it was a fascinating history and really enjoyed this field trip! Was George Catlin the first white person to encounter these native or was he just the first white painter to paint them?

: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi... I'm Rachelle Hubert from Noble Avenue Elementary. What's your viewpoint on the Native Americans' contribution to the slaughter of the buffalo? Our tourguide claimed that the Native Americans weren't just as much as fault as the whites. He claims that they weren't the ecologists everyone thinks they were.

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Kristin. His only criticism was of Native Americans who had been corrupted (usually by drink) by whites.

: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi, Catlin felt that the American Indians were uncorrupted by European influence in the far-west, what is your opinion?

Sara: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
That was me Sara.

tonyamandl, charnock: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Faye, I teach 4th and 5th grades at Charnock rd in LA. I was interested in the vast number of paintings depicting American Indian life. I would like to know more about Catlin, specifically, how much of what he depicted (or how much of the stories he told) were "enhanced" by his attempts to bring audiences to his exhibits. The stories that were told to us by the docent (presumably having been taken from Catlin's book?) were pretty far fetched at times, and perhaps some or part of some were purely for effect?

: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:46PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi, I am Jessie Armacost for Noble Elementary. I teach 4th grade and I enjoyed the Museum. I was wondering if it was the native americans who made the buffalo extinct?

tonyamandl, charnock: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:46PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Just to add to my last question - the docent told the stories as if they were fact, but I doubted the legitimacy of many of them.

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:46PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Kelley. The one of his nephew is the only one.

Hannah: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:46PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Do you believe that native people are natural ecologists?

Rachelle Hubert: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:47PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Oooppss-- Correction-- He claimed that the Indians were just as much at fault for the slaughter of the buffalo.

Emilio Lozano: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:47PM PST (-0800 GMT)
hello Faye on our rip the Autry museum guide stated that most of the indeginous people who lived in the area scalped their enemy, but in some native american wriiten books and other sources they state that this was the oipposite of what happened. in the books i have read it states that indians were being scalped and the scalps were being texchange for money. what is your opinion?

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:49PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Sara. My opinion is that that is correct.

tonyamandl, charnock: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
emilio - I have read that it was the French who started the scalping trend - to take back proof of their conquests home, and then some tribes started scalping them back. But I don't know if that is true. It certainly wasn't ALL native americans who practiced scalping.

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:52PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Rachelle. I don't agree. Native Americans killed buffalo but they revered buffalo and used every part for purposes of food, clothing, and other similar uses.

Rachelle Hubert, Noble: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:53PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thanks, Faye. I guess our tourguide's view was slightly biased.

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 1:55PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Hannah! I believe that Indians have a special reverence for nature.

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 2:04PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Any more questions?

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 2:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Faye - to questions not yet answered, ut 100 in the 'scroll back box and click the 'chat' button

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 2:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Marcy. You asked about my background and role in the exhibition. I have a Ph.D. in art history and a M.A. and B.A. in history. I have been at the Smithsonian since January 1992. My role in the exhibition was to interview American Indians to ask their opinions of Catlin's paintings. I'm assuming that the Autry Museum is using quotations that we used here in Washington. My primary role was to provide the content for the Catlin Web site.

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 2:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Someone else asked about Catlin's stories being farfetched. In general, scholars believe that what Catlin wrote in his "Letters and Notes" stayed fairly close to the truth. They question, however, his "exhibitions" of Indians here in the U.S. and in Europe.

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 2:21PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Faye - typing too fast - to reach questions not yet answered, use the scroll back box by typing in a large # and then click the 'chat; button - teachers will be checking back to see all answers ...

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 2:24PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Marcy. I tried that, and nothing happened.

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 2:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Maureen! Catlin was not the first white person to encounter the Indians. Remember that Lewis and Clark made their famous journey before Catlin traveled west. He was also not the first white person to paint Indians. Delegations of Indians came east and were painted by Charles Bird King. This museum has a painting by King of such a delegation. You can find it by looking at our Web site and searching for King. In addition, Karl Bodmer traveled west before Catlin did, and he painted Indians, including some (such as Four Bears)later painted by Catlin.

Faye Powe, Senior Museum Educator, SAAM: . . . . Thu, Jun 10, 2:58PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Marcy! I'm sorry to say that I have to leave. I didn't know that we would take this long, and I have to meet someone for dinner. It's been a pleasure to talk to all of you!

: . . . . Fri, Jun 11, 10:17AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Dear Faye, I was on the chat line yesterday, I just wanted to see how this works. My name is Maureen Mickool. My question is already posted. I was just wondering if you are still there is you would respond. Thanks.

What is your background - education and how you came to be at the Getty ?

Ingrid, Superior: . . . . Fri, Jun 11, 1:26PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Scott, Really enjoyed last Friday at the Getty the photo docents were great.

bob aird, pacoima middle school: . . . . Fri, Jun 11, 1:27PM PST (-0800 GMT)
hi Scott, Thanks for the tour! I am ignorant about the Getty's involvement with photogrqaphy. Do they have more contemporary work? Also, I didn't see any photos by Curtis or Ansel Adams in the exhibit....???

deborah garner: . . . . Fri, Jun 11, 1:28PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Scott, I am Deborah Garner and I am from Vintage Magnet. The overheads and the lessons with questions about the photography were a big hit with my kids during this last week. Can you give me some names of some paintings which give some very real views of pioneer children lives?

Colleen Becker, Lassen: . . . . Fri, Jun 11, 1:31PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Scott, I'm from Lassen Elementary School. I enjoyed the tour last week. Sorry I can't think of any questions right now.

Mr. Levine: . . . . Fri, Jun 11, 1:32PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Scott. It's Burt from King MS. I liked the shapes I saw in the crystals in the stone blocks used to face the buildings best. I also enjoyed the Weegee picture of the lovers in the Palace Theater. I may have been at that show as the audience was wearing 3D glasses. That showing was The House Of Wax which I saw at the Palace, too. Also, the Palace was the only theater on Broadway at that time (1940's to 50's) that had 10 vaudeville acts on stage before the movie. A full pit band with jugglers, acrobats, baggy pants comics, dog acts, some of which went on to the early TV shows. The movie of the day might be The Wild One, The House Of wax, or one of the many great black and white films of that era. Regards, Burt

Marcy Camp Internet: . . . . Fri, Jun 11, 1:35PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The Getty was involved in a rock art conservation project at a Chumash site in Santa Barbara some years back. Are there any current rock art projects you know of ?

Debbie Shaw: . . . . Fri, Jun 11, 1:35PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Scott. Thank you for the tour last week. That was the first time I visited the Getty. It was wonderful.

Hello Scott. Jay from Lassen Elementary. Thanks for the tour of the Photographers of Genius last Friday. It was very enjoyable and my daughter loves the poster. I don't know if I'll be able to get it back for my classroom. I've registered for a field trip next year, but haven't heard back yet.

Marcy, I know that the Getty Conservation Institute has doen soem work on rock art sites around the world. I really don't know all of the projects they are doing currently. I am sure the site is searchable to see what they might have posted

Scott : . . . . Fri, Jun 11, 1:59PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Deborah, you were asking for pioneer paintings, that show the reality of their situation. I don't know of such images in photos or in paintings. I will keep it in mind and let you know if I think of something.

Scott : . . . . Fri, Jun 11, 2:03PM PST (-0800 GMT)
All - I want to apologize for my bad typing and slow answers. I would be happy to answer other questions in relation to any of the artists we saw last week. I also found your postings on the George Catlin show interesting. Please let me know if there is anything more that I can help with. Marcy, you have my contact information.
