Good Evening to the Lake Arrowhead Sea Devils and parents ! Tonight you have a special opportunity to talk with marine scientists about the Sustainable Seas Expedition that will be traveling around the country starting in a matter of weeks. Can you imagine yourself, deep under the sea, in one of these one-person submersibles ? What would you look for ? Let us know what you would like the scientists to look for under the sea when they come to the Channel Islands in April.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:11PM PST (-0800 GMT)

Sarah Fangman: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi all - Actually, we haven't used the submersibles in the Channel Islands Sanctuary yet. They will be coming here May 26 (my birthday nice birthday present, huh?!). I did get a chance to dive in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, and the best part of diving there was the sea lions. As you might imagine, they were pretty curious about me and the sub, and swam in circles around me!
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What fuel does the sub run on?
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:43PM PST (-0800 GMT)
what do the caves look like on the channel islands?
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sarah, Did you get to touch and pet a sea lion?
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Are there many tunafish on Anacapa Island?
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Dave Long:
Each one of our habitats are somewhat different. Our students attempt to depict marine life in its natural setting. Our oldest and most established habitat is our warm water reef that has experienced both coral and annemone growth. That tank is 375gal with full spectrum lighting. Lighting plays a major role in all invertabrate development. We have had corals and annemones that have existsted in our 375 warm water reef that have been there four as long as the tank has been in existance (14years). But, large delicate corals are extremely difficult to keep and require a great deal of individual attention.
Carl: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:47PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Tim, we took a picture of Francesca and think I sent it where you asked. Check for it.
Morgan: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:47PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sarah and Francesca - you both represent women working in important science research. Has it been defficult to get women involved in Ocean research?
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:47PM PST (-0800 GMT)
David Gross: yes, I am a Junior at Cabrillo High School. I volunteered to help with the Aquarium webpage nearly 2 years ago and have now taken on the responsibility of running it here at school. You might visit our What's New page to see what is currently going on:

Sarah Fangman: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:47PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Paradise HomeSchool folks - I certainly hope there will be an impact on the management of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary! The Sustainable Seas Expeditions will allow us to gain a better understanding of the resources that are found deep in our Sanctuary. And with that understanding, we will know better how to protect those resources.
Sarah Fangman: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The submersibles are battery powered - 20 BIG batteries (like the size of a car battery).
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:51PM PST (-0800 GMT)

When I saw the sea lions in Monterey, I was in forty feet of water and I was locked in the submersible - so I didn't get to pet them. I sure wish I could swim like them, though! They are very fast and graceful swimmers!
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:53PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Francesca, how were you selected to direct the Sustainable Seas Expedition for this area. What type of education do you need to prepare yourself for underwater exploration.
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:53PM PST (-0800 GMT)
At any time was there wolfs on the island becaus there was
dogs or wild dogs?
Francesca: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:54PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Morgan, There are quite a lot of women involved in the Sustainable Seas Expeditions. The Director is Sylvia Earle, she holds the world's record for the deepest untethered dive of anyone, man or woman. Nancy Foster, with NOAA, has been our champion in the federal government making sure we can work at all the marine sanctuaries around the country. Margaret Sears and Susan Reeve at the National Geographic Society are the primary people in Washington DC that work on our Expeditions. And of course, you've already heard from Sarah Fangman. So, as you can there are many women involved and they are a very important part of this project.
Tsunami: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:55PM PST (-0800 GMT)
To Francesca and Sarah and Dave:
Have the caves out at the Islands been explored much. Do you expect to find new species or artifacts during the SSE project?
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:58PM PST (-0800 GMT)
what type of whales are there on the chanel island?
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 7:59PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sea Devils, of course we have a huge migration of grey whales traveling along our Ca Coast from the cold waters of the north to the warm waters of mexico, but we have been told there are also many blue whale, and a few other large mammals that inhabit the channel islands the year round. We are fortunate that we have such a natureal area for large mammals to feed and enjoy our local sanctuary.
Sarah Fangman: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:00PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The caves have been explored as a part of other research projects. However we do not plan to explore the caves of the Channel Islands during the Sustainable Seas Expeditions. Instead we will be probing the deeper regions of the Sanctuary. And yes, I expect we will find a lot of new and exciting things in the process! I can't wait to get started!
Francesca: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:01PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Cabrillo Aquarium, Hi, glad you're on line. I was very lucky to be chosen to work on the Expeditions. I had worked for NOAA for over 20 years and used to manage both the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary here in Santa Barbara and then later the national program in Washington. Probably more importantly, Sylvia Earle and I staged a really great expedition to the Persian Gulf in 1992 to look at the effects of the giant oil spill after that war. We realized how important it would be if we could mount an expedition in our own country, looking at our ocean. We want more and more people to see how important the ocean is to each of us.
Paradise HomeSchool: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:02PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Francesca, Sarah, Dave: are you aware of the Gaviota Conservancy or any other work involving coastal conservation?
Sarah Fangman: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:02PM PST (-0800 GMT)
As a part of our research here at the Channel Islands Sanctuary, we conduct aerial surveys of the waters around the islands, looking for whales and dolphins. We flew today and saw five fin whales around Santa Barbara Island. On other days we've seen killer whales, blues, humpbacks, greys, risso's dolphins, common dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins.
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:03PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Is the submarine going to be operated by a person (passenger) or will it be video that will be projected back to the surface. If a person will be inside, what must his qualifications be?
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:04PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi.Weel try to find some questions.
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What type of wild animals live on the island?
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
how long do you or they stay under water?
Francesca: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:06PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Tsunami, Its amazing that we know so little about the ocean. Less than 5% of the ocean has been explored and therefore we hope to make many new discoveries, especially in areas deeper than scuba depth, 200 feet or deeper. That is what makes these Expeditions so exciting, the unknown, and all that is left to learn. Our DeepWorker submersible will allow us to go up to 2000 feet and stay for hours without worrying about getting wet or running out of air.
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:06PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What island are you on?
Allan - Ventura: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:07PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Francesca Cava: Is the Sustainable Seas Expedition an environmental advocacy project or strictly a science research project?
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:07PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sea Devils, our national park and the sanctuary has a wide variety of mammals and fishes of all kinds. Our large grey whale migrates between our coast line and the channel islands regularly each year. We also have large heards of sea lions, sea elephants, and many varieties of indigenous fish. We are fortunate to have such a preserve and national park to enjoy. Thanks to NOAA and Sactuary mangagement, this area can be utilized by a large number of people.
Francesca: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Cabrillo Aquarium, The sub is operated by one person. We posted a Call for Collaboration for scientists and teachers to join our Expedition and learn how to become a pilot for next years project. We are currently training about 70 people to join us next year. We'll also be asking students to help us design research projects while we're in the marine sanctuaries. Do you have any ideas?
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The Cabrillo Aquarium is not on an island; it is located in the valley of the flowers, Lompoc, California. It is run and operated by students for other students and has become well known as a marine laboratory for grades K-12.
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:10PM PST (-0800 GMT)
we are on Anakapa isle
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:11PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yes, our students are working on an underwater habitat for small air breathing animals. We have a team of students that is very closely paralleing the AQUARIUS Project in Florida. We have now begun testing and our students are experiencing everything from Archemedes Principle of boyancy to disposing of animal waste in underwater habitats. We would love to be considered as your student projects develope.
Margaret, Harris & friends: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:12PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We have studied about the GLOBE Project and are very interested in gathering new information about our environment. The students were wondering if the SSE is expected to gather much information of use to the general public or will it be primarily scientifically relevant information?
Francesca: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:14PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Allan, Ventura, Hi there! The Sustainable Seas Expeditions is an ocean exploration and public education project. So to answer your question, we're both a marine protection advocasy program and a science program. I do hope that we will be more than that though. Our real goal is to make people think about the ocean the same way that they think about the land or the air or space. We also want to make sure that even people that don't live near the beach understand that the choices they make can impact the health of the ocean. It will be a real challange.
Camp: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:15PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Francesca - what will be the best way to stay in touch with current SSE events?
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:15PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What kind of animals are in the water near the channel islands?
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:15PM PST (-0800 GMT)
How long do the whales stay during their migration period?
Thomas L.: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:17PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sarah - Does the National Marine Sanctuary have a public education program?
Francesca: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Margaret, Harris & friends, Our goal is definitely to make sure the information we collect is available to everyone. We are asking all the scientists on our Expedition to "translate" their research in such a way that everyone can understand what they find. The Expedition will also have an on-line Expedition Log as a Web page, hosted by the National Geographic Society and NOAA, that will include a photo gallery of everything we film. Be sure to look for our web page after April, 1999!
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
How long will each dive be in the submarine? To what depth will the pilot take the submarine? Specifically, what will he/she be looking for.
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
How long do the whales stay under the water?
Margaret - Santa Maria: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Dave Long - Is the Cabrillo Aquarium taking part in the SSE project?
: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sea Devils - there are SO many animals in the waters surrounding the Channel Islands, it's hard to list them all! Marine mammals have already been mentioned. There are many species of seabirds that live on or around the islands. Of course there are lots of fish - rockfish, sanddabs, gobies, seaperch, sculpin, etc. There are sharks and rays, urchin, lobster, squid, sea turtles... you name it, we've got it!
Francesca: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:21PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Camp: As I mentioned earlier, the National Geographic Society will be hosting a web page that will not only let you see what we find, but also provide virtual tours of each of the marine sanctuaries around the country. They are billing these tours as a "E-ticket", so it should be almost like being there. The web will be on-line next April as part of the Society's web site. Be sure to check it out.
Ojai HomeSchool Friends: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Francesca / Sarah - a number of our families have been asking what is the best major for their kids to get into once they enter college if they want to focus on work with Oceans Environment.
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Margaret--The Cabrillo Aquarium is not part of the SSE program, but fortunately, the SSE program is letting all of us, as students and teachers, participate by recieving information, tracking the progress of the program, and becoming more aware of the wonders of our central coast and the Channel Island Sanctuary.
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:24PM PST (-0800 GMT)
How do the sharks kill ?

Here is a picture of the Captains Seat in one of the submersibles.
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:26PM PST (-0800 GMT)
How many submersibles will there be available at any one time?
Francesca: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:27PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Cabrillo Aquarium, Technically, the sub can stay down 106 hours, much longer than a pilot would want to stay out (remember the subs don't have bathrooms). Typically, we expect our dives will be 2 to 4 hours. New pilots will stay at 500 feet or shallower, depending on what they are looking for. But I have no doubt that some pilots will go deeper, all the way to 2000 feet, especially as they make more dives. We have over 40 different projects with each project looking for different things. But the main theme is to try to understand just what is out there. How many critters, where do they live, what shape is their habitat in, etc.
: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:29PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thomas - yes, the Sanctuary has an education program. We produce videos and other educational materials. Our staff participate in a variety of public outreach events in the area (like Earth Day, the Whale Festival, etc). We host Sanctuary Cruises, photography workshops, and host live uplinks from the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary also partners with the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History on the Los Marineros Marine Education Program. Just to name a few!
Francesca: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:30PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Ojai school, Its hard to say what the best college major is. My background is mathematics, but I find that most people that get into marine related careers specialize in some type of science or engineering field. My guess is that as technology becomes more a part of our lives that a more multi-disciplinary approach will be best. And of course, computer science will be a key to everything. The best recommendation is to find something that you really love.
Sea Devils: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello is anybody out there?
CABRILLO AQUARIUM: . . . . Wed, Dec 16, 8:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We would like to thank the SSE program for answering our questions and wish them the best of luck in future adventures. Please keep us in mind when you think of student projects and how CONQFISH1 (our student-developed underwater habitat)can be integrated into your student project progam. CONQFISH1 can be observed in the What's New Section of our website.

Ojai HomeSchool Friends - Well, many people who have an interest in the marine environment focus on the sciences. I majored in environmental studies and biology in college. But we don't just need scientists in the fight to protect our marine environment. I see a need for people with other sorts of skills - artists, writers, musicians, photographers - their talents could be used to help inspire others to want to protect the environment.

Marcy, Janice is this where we need to be?
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:03PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I'll assume this will be picked up soon. I heard from Carol Peterson of the National Park. She doesn't have access at home and can't be part. I'll call her with details.
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We could camp at McGraff State Beach for $20/night/site. Only eight can stay in each site. There are 15 sites. Showers are .25 each. could we maybe find other accomodations?

Hi Jim and Marcy, I,m here. I'll take a minute and catch up
on what's been said already...Janice
: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:16PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Glad we both found our way here.
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I don't have a cost on bus transportation yet. Hope it isn't prohibitive. I know we can't afford any more expense.
: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I've heard that the boat can take a limit of 67 people.
Does that mean that parents who went along would have to stay
shore? I have a very active parent group and would probably
have 31 students and 10-15 parents. Should I try to limit
that a little? Janice
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
You said you had almost forty people expected to go. Marcy said the boat can only hold 62. I have 32 kids so potentially 40 with chaperones. We may have a problem.
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We do have to take that into serious consideration.
: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Jim, will the new messages just appear or do I have to click
on Chat every now and then to get new ones? Who is on line
with us? Janice
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)
You have to click on chat any time you send or want to receive. Marcy isn't here as yet. Carol from the National Park can't access us from home yet. I'll call her later. We are the only four potential chatters.
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:23PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Besides numbers what other considerations do you see we need to take into account?

Is staying in Ventura on the 19th workable for you?
Janice/: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:28PM PST (-0800 GMT)
One good thing is
I don't have to worry about bus expense-I will use parent
drivers. But then will there be room for parking. I suppose
we can work that out. Does that camp ground you mentioned
have vacant space for us all? I can do some checking with
trusty AAA for other spots or maybe you have a handle on that.
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:29PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The state beach has 15 sites and will allow 8 per site. Should be p;arking for cars.
Janice/: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:30PM PST (-0800 GMT)
yes, the 19th is fine. I can be very flexible as to when.
Other things to think about is food? I quess we could just
be sure to provide for our own groups seperately?
Do you know how long the boat excursion is. or do we need to plan for other
activities?
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:31PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy has the answer concerning time for the excursion and time on island. I assume it would fill the day. Maybe food separately would be ok.
Janice/: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)
You know, it would be kinda fun to pretty much take over that camp ground
What is it's location and name again?
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:34PM PST (-0800 GMT)
McGrath in Ventura/Oxnard.
Janice/: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:35PM PST (-0800 GMT)
From what I think I first read - it sounded like Marcy is expected
to come on line with us. Any expectations as to when?
: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:37PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I expect her, but never discussed how this was to work. Wonder where she could be.
Janice/: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Oh, my your reponse just make me laugh out loud. Do you want
me to check with AAA for maybe a cheaper spot. although I
could cover for - say 8 of those sites. Could you take the
other 7? Then it would all be ours and we wouldn't have to
worry about bothering others. Can you call and see if the
full 15 sites arre available, or I can do it if you would like.
I.m rather good at following directions (and giving them too!)
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
How are your online activities coming. do you have more than one computer to access C Internet?
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Carol just talked to them today and the 15 sites are available. we need to book them as soon as possible. don't know how many other people would be there in the middle of the week in May.
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
You could try AAA and/or we could see if any schools in Camp Internet could help.
Janice/: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:49PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yes, I've fought tooth and claw along with tears (assistant
superintendents and technitians respond so well to tears) although
mine were genuine. I ended up getting NO financial support
from our DO (but they did say ok, if I found the $)but got a local man to wire me two drops.
I also am the district's science mentor so was able to use
about $500 to cover at least some material costs. We have just
started this week exploring the Wooley Mamoths-which I love.
Sometimes the material is a little over their heads but overall
it has been very positive. my favorite part is the challenges
and other activities they pass along.
Janice/: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:52PM PST (-0800 GMT)
How is it going for you? How many classroom computers? Also, how are your
students? I taught 6th grade for 8 years, and now I'm into
my 3rd year with 4th. I'm settling in real well!
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:52PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I've tried getting online and using a viewer but the one we have doesn't produce a very clear picture for reading. I have to put my own phone lines into my room. Both lines are already being paid for.
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:54PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I'm learning about 6 graders. It is a bit different from 5th where I spent 12 years. I think i'm managing. We only have one computer in our lab that is online. i want to find out about Webwhacker.
Janice/: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:56PM PST (-0800 GMT)
You mean you have one computer. Do you switch classes or
have your homeroom all day? Do you let them work on it
one small group at a time?
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:58PM PST (-0800 GMT)
To try and sum up our chat tonight, i'd say we need to get our numbers to meet the boat's capacity, and find cheaper place to stay. My numbers are always iffy. I can get a [pretty firm count next month during parent conferences. I might also hold an info night soon. Let me know if you find anything through AAA.
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 7:59PM PST (-0800 GMT)
To answer your questions, we don't have access in our room. We go to a lab to access it for no more than 40 minutes at a time. I do go into a small trailer and take my computer and use the virewer I spoke of earlier.
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 8:00PM PST (-0800 GMT)
That trailer is only available on Monday and Friday and is crowded.
Janice/: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 8:01PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Well, I'm up for reserving that campground now if you think it is a good
idea. If Marcy still isn't here - then I think I'll go
correct some papers. But I"ll wait for a last response from
you in case there is something else. Thanks. This has been
a good experienc for me. Usually I just let the kids do these
chats, and I'm a passive observer. I'll look for e=mail from
you on a regular basis.. I'll be in my Masters class tomorrow
night and access mailman there. Let me know what I can do>
Jim: . . . . Wed, Jan 13, 8:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
If you don't mind calling and making reservations I'll email the number to you. I'm teaching a class tomorrow night. Great talking to you.
