Welcome Mr. Morris - Our Camp Internet students would like to know if there are weather stations out on the Channel Islands, and how many weather stations float on the water in the Channel. How do these remote stations report back to the main weather station in Oxnard ?

We have taken part in the Weather gathering project
on Camp Intenet in years past. Has anyone checked
out the weather form for recording daily observations?
We are going to measure rain and wind and clounds through the spring to see how 1999 compares with last year.

Is there much known about the weather patterns back when
the Chumash were the main people living here? Has the
weather changed in any important way over the past
100 years in the channel?
Weatherman: . . . . Fri, Feb 19, 9:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Good Morning Marcy,
Thank you, Timothy, and the entire Rain Project for the
opportunity to participate in todays chat. I know it is
a bit early but I wanted to be sure all systems were
working.
As for the answer to your first question, there are a few
weather reporting stations on the offshore islands but
certainly not enough. We use approximately four stations
throughout all eight offhsore islands now. In addition,
there are two buoys in the channel that provide us with
marine/wind data.
The way in which we receive the data depends upon who owns
the weather station. It is basically received either by
telephone or by radio waves via a repeater.

I see that several people/groups have already signed on.
Hello to Mrs. Archer's class, to Brian and Alan, and Paradise Home School.
As to the answer to the Paradise School question on the Chumash Indians, there is much information available about weather patterns when the indigenous Chumash were prevalent here.
I have a forecaster that is looking at El Nino and the relationship to the Chumash Indians. His name is David Sweet. Most of the information
he has gained is from tribal leaders and handed down stories they tell.

Paradise HomeSchool: . . . . Fri, Feb 19, 9:57AM PST (-0800 GMT)

Is there a way to read or get copies of the information
begin gathered from tribal leaders and/or the stories
they tell?

We have been discussing the word Meteorology -
Does the word have anything to do with meteorites or
just weather?
: . . . . Fri, Feb 19, 9:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
How did chumash predict the weather? Was that important? Did it affect their crops?
ALan and Brian from Norht Verdemont
Weatherman: . . . . Fri, Feb 19, 10:00AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Why does weather change? A simple question with a very complicated answer.
Like almost everything else in this world the weather in any one area is driven
by factors around the globe. The weather is even dependent upon where we are in the solar system!
When we watch the weather here in the office, we often see things happen in Japan or indonesia that eventually works its
way to California. As for how does it rain? Another complicated answer having to do with rising air that
cools as it goes up. At some point it cools to the point that it turns into clouds. If it continues
to rise, it eventually turns into rain. That is the simple answer to a complicated process.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Feb 19, 10:01AM PST (-0800 GMT)
re : chumash and weather ....In doing research for the Camp, I read that the Chumash abandonded Santa Cruz Island for the most part in 1812 as a result of a change in the avialable sea food. Reading that made me think of an El Nino parallel - how the warmer El Nino waters limit the small cold water food sources ( upwelling ) that the larger fish and mammals usually come to the Channel for, so there is a small number of possible food sources for humans. Also in that year, a horrible earthquake hit the islands, uplifting and tearing apart a portion of Santa Rosa Island, and those Chumash also migrated to the mainland. That must have been a terrible year ... I believe the quake also generated a tsunami on the mainland. A weather and geology calamity of terrible proportions.

Welcome Ventura - 5th grade. Meteorology has nothing to do with meteorites despite
the word similarities and it has everthing to do with the study of the atmosphere.

Mr. Morris, please share with the students what it is a Meteorologist does ... and what you studied in college to become a Weatherman. Also, what are NOAA's responsibilities ?
: . . . . Fri, Feb 19, 10:16AM PST (-0800 GMT)
How did the Chumash protect themselves against the bad weather on the islands?
Ashely & Ation
Weatherman: . . . . Fri, Feb 19, 10:16AM PST (-0800 GMT)
For Ation and Jared...the weather changes so fast in the channel because of the interaction between the sea the land and the mountains so close to the water.
For Sammy, grade 6...a simoon, while usually associated with larger scale areas does occasional impact
Santa Barbara. Today we call them Sundowners. It happens when very warm air North of the Santa Ynez mountains flows over and through the mountain gaps
and decends to sea level. In doing so it warms very rapidly and to extreme levels. In recent time, the warmest recorded Sundowner was 106 degrees.
Camp...the map you see of the four counties represents the area of responsibility we have in California.
The numbers starting with 34 and going to 59 are our zone forecast numbers. A forecast is provided for each one of those zones.
For areas outside of these four counties, the forecast are handled by our sister offices in San Diego, Hanford, and Monterey.

Campers - I just left a message for David Sweet inviting him to come online later and answer your questions reagrding the Chumash and weather on the islands. While there are no Chumash living today on the islands - both the Chuamsh in the North and Gabrielino in the South ( Catalina )do visit the islands and hold special ceremonies - even canoe races - every year. check back later to see if Mr. Sweet is able to answer the Chumash-related questions ...

Weatherman: . . . . Fri, Feb 19, 10:25AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Slyvia...smoke and dust that is thrown into the air whether by a firework display or a volcano
act like magnets for premature water droplets. These water droplets continue to attach to the smoke and dust and eventually get big enough to be rain drops. That is if they do not dry up and evaporate first.
Camp...a Meteorologist spends much of his or her time looking at
weather maps, satellite pictures, radar images, and surface reports. In addition, he or she uses his knowledge of how weather works to prepare a forecast. These forecasts are all done on
computers and sent either by satellite or telephone to users. To be a Meteorologist, one must go to college for a minimum of four years and usually six and study lots of physics, chemistry, and math.
We are a small part of NOAA. The NWS responsibility is the protection of lives and property and the promotion of economic well being of all 11 million people living in the four counties mentioned earlier.

Sarah at Oak View...We actually do not know the coldest temperature ever recorded on the Channel Islands.
We are only aware of what the coldest reported temperature has been on Santa Cruz Island since 1910 which was
plus 8 degrees F! I am sure most animals survived since this temperature probably did not last for more than a few
hours but I am sure some of the plants froze!! Air temperature effects only the upper levels of the ocean and very slowly.

Oak View...I cannot tell you when the Islands received the most rain as I do not have the records here.
Weather on the islands today will be partly sunny after morning fog and haze. Temperatures will range from the mid 50s to mid 60s. There also will be some wind especially out on Santa Rosa and San Miguels islands.

Oak View...Since I do not have the records I cannot tell you
when they had the biggest storm. There have been many big storms over the last 100 years. In fact, one of the bigger storms occurred on December 6, 1997 at the
beginning of our last El Nino. The big storm brought more than 6 inches of rain in one day and flooding to Santa Cruz Island.
