Oaks Middle School: How much money does
a manager of a sanctuary make?
Sam - 9th grade: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:17AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Ed: does the national sanctuary have to deal with
shipwrecks much?
CONQFISH: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:18AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Have there been any more domoic acid events in the Channel Islands?
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:19AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Is there a twilight-zone in the Channel?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:19AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Simone: The CINMS works with many differnt disciplines, like education, marinie science (bilogy, physical oceanography), we have vessel captain, aircraft pilots, webmasters, adminstrative support, GIS specialists. The CINMS intersect many of these displines. A good math and ascience backround, good communication skills are helpful
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:20AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Conqfish: Not that I am aware.
Sea Devils - Twilight zone...could you be more specific
Sea devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:21AM PST (-0800 GMT)

Do you know where the twilight zone is on the channel
islands? And which one.
CONQFISH: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:21AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Are there any hard copies of the databases @ the National Marine Sanctuaries?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:22AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sam: One of the major this the CINMS protects is shipwrecks. There are over 200 documeted ship wrecks in the CINMS. We are workingf with the national park to protect and study these very important windows into our maritme past. The cinms is also working witht he new SB maritme museum. If you visit their web page you will some some of our collaborative wprojects.

CONQFISH: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:26AM PST (-0800 GMT)
(this is Dave Long @the aquarium) Ed, I'm sure there have been many questions asked about your involvement w/ the one man sub. What has been the most difficult part of adjusting to such a small craft when you have been the captian of some of the largest ships in NOAA's fleet?
oak view/ arnaz: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We've just come in from recess....
What is the situation with abalone, urchin, and squid populations now...We heard that over hunting and El nino took great effect on these populations. Is this an area of your work, to monitor these populations???
oak view/ arnaz: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)

cassandra: Trying to get back to you earlier question about ownership. The CINMS does nopt own the CINMS. With in three miles of the coast the submerged tidelands are owned by the stae of CA beyond three miles it is owned by the US. We have regualtory authority of living anf non-living resoures over the entire boundary. We share this jurisdiction with the state of CA, the national marine fisheries service.
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:28AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Are there Seahorses on the channle
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Dave long: I found navigatin the sub very intutive based on my exoperince as a ships captin. Driving with my feet was a little new.
oak view/ arnaz: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
How dark is it down that deep?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:31AM PST (-0800 GMT)
oak/view the state of CA fish and game is monitoring ese populations. we have supported monitoring efforts of the national park as well. We have a varity of research projects to understand some of theaspects of this ecosytem.
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:31AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The answer to the twilight zone question is that we would
like to know about the really dark places with strange
fish.
CONQFISH: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:32AM PST (-0800 GMT)
(this is David Gross, student Webmaster) Do you think that the CONQFISH1 project has any relation to the one man subs that will be exploring the Channel Islands Santuary?
oak view/ arnaz: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:33AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Have any sharks ever came by your submarine?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:33AM PST (-0800 GMT)
oak/view: It effectivel black in depts below several hundred feet down. Light at these depths is generated by the animals that live there. Intersitling, as light pentrates water the difent wavelenthgs are filtered out. Red is the first color to go. We find that many of the deep sea animals are red in colr which would make them alsmost invisble at depth.
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:36AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Conqfish: The conqfish one describes an UW habita. This sub is a version of putinmammal into the marine environmet. In this case it is a mobile platform. I understand that on Conqfish's next dive the mouse will have bedding and food. We will not have the luxery in the sub will operate. It is about the size of airline seat (first class)
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:37AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Are there tigersharks in the open ocean?
peter - SB - 10grade: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:37AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Is there any concern that congress will reduce funding
for national sanctuaries or are they a secure part of
our countries conservation efforts?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
oak view/amaz: We have not conducted the expediton yet but stay tuned, we will be reporting back every night form the NOAA ship Macarthu, so if we see sharks you will here about it. In the Gulf o the Farlonnes Sanctuary they will be using the sub to observe great white sharks.
Paradise HomeSchool: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Ed - we were reading that CINMS is responsible for
Sanctuary Management. Is there a difference between
"Management" and "Conservation" in regards to the
Channel?
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Why would red be the first color to go?
What are the next colors to go?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:39AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sea devils: Tiger shrks are tropical and I believe generally associted witht he nearshore evironment.
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Is anyone there?
CONQFISH: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:40AM PST (-0800 GMT)
(this is Michelle Calloway, student in Mr. Whitmire's ROP Environmental tech. class) I am working on a project dealing with the effects of domoic acid on the central coast. Have there been any studies you know of done on domoic acid?
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Can you please answer our questions about the colors?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
peter SB - The President has requeste that he National Marine Sanct. budget should be doubled.
Sea devils - red has a short wavelegth and that why it is filterd out first. Orange tand then yellow I think. The last are blue and then it goes to black
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:43AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Is our time up for today?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Conqfish: The NMFS in Seattle has done the work here.Mr. Whitmore has that number. NMFS is part of NOAA.
Sea deveils did you see our answer

Oaks Middle School: What kinds of sharks live
in the channel? Have there been any reports
of shark attacks?
CONQFISH: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
(this is Dave Long) Teachers who are interested in marine related subjects and particularly the sanctuary, is there any one organization or group that is capable of giving direction [to them]. As you know, MERA has become a strong leader in helping teachers and organizations better understand the sea. Would that be a good group for teachers to turn to?
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
IS THERE A TWILIGHT ZONEIN THE OCEAN IN THE CHANEL?
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Is their an twilight zone in the ocean on the channel
island.
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
paridise: The CINMS has at is core the protection of the resource sof the CINMS. We use managment to attain that goal. The CINMS also recognizes the multiple uses of the resources in this area. Our feeling is that protecting the resoureces leads to sustainbility. The CINMS, like the national park are long term (century and more ) programs of the US that recognizes the importance of these special areas. We as a naotion depend heavily on the marine environment, protecting it ensures its futre for all of us.
Mrs. Harris: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
As a teacher, it is great to see Dr. Earl - a woman scientist - having such an important scientific and historical role in the SSE mission. There is a great need to get more girls involved in the sciences, and Dr. Earl is a great example. What do the professional women on your staff at CINMS do ? This would be good for the female students to hear ..
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:48AM PST (-0800 GMT)
WHAT KIND OF WHALES ARE THERE ON THE CHANEL?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:49AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sea Deveils: It is my understanding tha when you type in bold you are shouting....please be more specific...my guess is your question is are there areas in the ocean that have low light levels... The answer is yes. Depending if you are in the tropics or temperate oceans that would occur at differnt depts.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:50AM PST (-0800 GMT)
To Mrs. Ross with the Sea Devils - can you please let us know what is being referred to as the 'twilight zone" in your unit ?
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:51AM PST (-0800 GMT)
IF THEIR ARE ANY TWILIGHT ZONE,WHAT KIND OF ANIMALS ARE THEIR?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:51AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Mrs Harris: I aggree Dr. Earle is a great expample of women in science, she is great model for all of us. My reserch program specialst, education corrdiantor, volleteer corrdiantor, webmaster and admis assitant are all women. Sarah, our reserch specialst is the other CINMS pilot and is currently aboaurd the NOAA ship David Starr Jordan conducing reserch off the coast.
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
What are the characteristics of the North Anacapa and South Santa Rosa waters / undersea topography that have lead to them being the focus of the first SSE expedition ?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sea Devils: There are over 27 dofernt kinds of whales that are seen in the CINMS. Grey whales, blue whales, humpback whales, common dolhins are good examples. The othe rday our research vessel has a killer whale rifding the bow wave of the boat. The BALLENA is 56 feets long and this young male killer whale was about 20 feet long. Everyone was preety excited about it.
: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:55AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Oaks Middle School: What has been the strangest
encounter while protecting the santuary?
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:56AM PST (-0800 GMT)
tWILIGHT ZONE IS THE VERY BOTTOM, DEEP AREAS WHERE THERE IS NO SUNLIGHT
tHE CREATURES THERE HAVE TO PRODUCE THEIR OWN LUMINANTS.
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:56AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy: One of the focuse of SSE and CINMS is to map thi area with a device called side scan sonar. It allows us to see the bottom detail to 10 cm accuracy. The sub will be used to ground truth the side scan sonar. wea re looking at the habits that exist and the fi and other animals that are located with differnt types of habitat. This will help understnd the CINMS. The area off of santa rosa is where squis spawn. we are tryong to undertand why this place is so impotasnt for squid.
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:57AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sea devils: Many creature live in this zone from fish, crabs sharks etc. It is in this zone the giant squid and sperm whales battle.
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Oaks midddle school: One day I watched a blue shark eating krill next to a blue whale eating krill that was strnge and extremly exciting
Sea Devils: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 10:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
HOW BIG SQUID ARE DOWN THEIR?
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 11:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Sea devils: Giant squid have been estimated at 60 feet...Jules Verne was not far off in ihis depiction of these animlas. I hope to sit quitetly at 2000 feet in this sub and turn off all the lights and watch what happens. I was even thinking about bringing dow low light devices to peer into this balck world. As a new pilot it will be awhile before I cn get o this depth. Dr. early will be experincing this depth at the CINMS
ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 11:03AM PST (-0800 GMT)

ed: . . . . Fri, Feb 26, 11:07AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Conqfish: Thanks dave, I spend more of my time these days in the office. Sorry for all the typos. I would offer this to all on the chat. Learning to type quickly and coorectly will serve you in most of todays jobs. The use of computers in all of our lives makes this a great neccesiity.

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON SEA LION?
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 7:43AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Welcome to a NEW TREASURE HUNT for March 12th, 1999. Today, we will be exploring the web to learn more about TIDEPOOLS, and about organizations who host programs that protect our marine environmnet - from the inland rivers that can collect pollutants that threaten life when the empty out into the sea, to a high school aqaurium with a LIVE video camera pointed on a living tidepool dispaly, out to seeing life in the tidepools out on the remote Channel Islands. Please follow the links where you see the word 'button' and then return and post your findings her in the Camp chat room. We'll be checking in all day to see how you are doing !!! have fun !!!!!
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 7:49AM PST (-0800 GMT)
First, the Camp would like to introduce you to MERA - the Marine Educators Regional Alliance. MERA is a consortium of agencies working to increase public awareness and understanding of important marine ecosystem issues and resources. The marine environment is a national treasure, one that deserves to be better understood and protected for future generations. So, click on button and see who is participating in this orgnaization. Once you are there, pick an organization to learn more about, and come back and tell us 1) the name of the organization 2) what their work is - what do they do to help the marine environment ?
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 7:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Second clue ..... The lead agency helping MERA to form and become active has been the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary under the direction of Sanctuary Manager, Ed Cassano. Let's go visit the Sanctuary web site and learn about tidepool life ....... first, we will take a look at a Blood Star ..... clik on this button for a great image - and - come back and tell us : How many legs can a Blood Star have ?
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 7:56AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Okay .. that was NOT a Blood Star was it ! here it is ... button ... come back and tell us : How many stars can a Blood Star have ?
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 8:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Looks like it is going to take one more try to get to that illusive Blood Star !!! here we go - try this - button for the third clue, let's go back to that Purple Urchin image, and tell us : What does a sea urchin eat ? And did you know that people also eat this same food sometimes ? click on button
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 8:04AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Well, that Blood Star is certainly giving me trouble .. I found what I was entering wrong, so will try one last time ... hope we make it this time .... button
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 8:11AM PST (-0800 GMT)
On we go .. Clue four..... Sea Anemonaes are considered one of the most beautiful creatures in tidepools ... here is a Rose Anemonae to study .... first, learn what the range of habitat is for the anemonae .. it is not found any further south then the Channel Islands, but is found as far north as where ? button and once you have learned its range of habitat, now look at the anemonae when it is closed button .... where do its tentacles go when it is closed ? and can you guess why it closes up ?
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 8:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
And just so you know where you have been seeing these great photographs, here is a link to the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary homepage button Please click on an icon on their page and for Clue five, study where it leads .. then come back and tell us what you discovered - weather ? submersibles ? marine animals ? maps ?
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 8:19AM PST (-0800 GMT)
One more stop at the Sanctuary homepage ... Clue six ... what creatures live in the Channel tidepools ? this button lists at least nine creatures that live in the intertidal zone ... what are they ? and have you ever seen one in person ?
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Fri, Mar 12, 8:25AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Final stop today .. a location we will be coming back to next week ... Clue seven ....go to the MERA web site at button and click on the Cabrillo High School Aquarium. When you arrive on their student-run, and excellent, web site, go to the upper right area and click on their Aquarium Cam link ... this will take you to a LIVE image of a tidepool creature or other marine life that is living right at their high school, this very minute, in their aquarium laboratory. Come back and tell us 1) what was the date and time stamp on the picture you saw ?... 2) what was in the picture you saw ? ... it will take a few seconds for the picture to to open since it is live video.. be patient .. the students at the school have set this up just for you !!

test message - Campers, please click on this button and come back and tell us what you see LIVE on the video cam. We will then ask you questions that may require you to use the same button again ....
Marcy, Camp Counselor: . . . . Mon, Mar 15, 11:33AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Dave - I just tested the link to the acam and it works fine. Ask your students to prepare some questions for the camp students that requires them to link to the acam or other online resoruce. Then, when they post to the chatroom, they imbed the url with a space before it and after it, and it has to be the exact url, and the end users will see the word 'button' as above. BTW - we have snow here in Buellton !!!
