Thomas, the Cabrillo Aquarium started in 1986 with one student and a teacher being interested in the sea. Since then each year students developed projects that help show others about the many animals that inhabit the coastal waters. We now have 12 live displays and 12 static displays. Thomas, the Sustainable Seas Project is a wonderful adventure into the sea. Sylvia Earle will be directing small submarines which will explore deep into the Channel Island. Eric Huynh, team leader for Conqfish1 is developing a small underwater habitat for mice. This will help other students understand all of the safety factors that go in to exploring the sea. Ayami, great question. Each one of our tanks has a biological filter that breaks down most of the waste that is left by our fish. It is very similar a mini suage treatment plant. These filters are called biological of trickle filters. We run water over beds of bacteria. Chris Ladwig

Ayami, after every dive I totally break down Conqfish1 and clean out all of the waste and replenish it with freshwater, food, and bedding. Pearl and Aquamouse love to run around in their two story underwater habitat eating and going to the bathroom. Mrs. Harris, no when they are under water they are more interested in investigating Conqfish1. No there is no sign of stress because there is one atmosphere so no sense of pressure. The atmospheric pressure is 14.7 psi and he is only submerged 18 inches.

Mrs. Harris, our purpose was not to develop math problems but to evaluate the amount of ballast neccessary to sink Conqfish1 to the bottom of the exsisting aquarium. Archimedes principal of bouyancy issue and our students were asked to determine the amount of weight and B.B. it would take. For one cubic foot of habitat, our students estimated correctly 30 lbs. of ballast was needed.

Dr. Murphy, yes we have a very controlled group of abalone in our coldwater reef. All of the four inch abalone came from the P.G.E. Marine Lab. We have seen certain abalone excrete a white milky substance. We are assuming this was a spawning trait. One of our problems is a lack of Kelp. But all animals are doing very good.

Twyla- Yes. I have seen a whale up close in a boat whale watching and also as a scuba diver I got very close to a large female and her baby. But unfortunately she sensed me before I actually saw her as she swam away I could feel the swirl of her tail. Very exciting! -Dave Long, advisor

Twyla- If you are refferring to the mini-sub that will be exploring the deep-sea environment, then no we will not be in it. Dr. Steve Webster, education director for the Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the participants in this program. The question is: how do we clean its cage? The cage Pearl and Aquamouse live in is cleaned daily with fresh bedding, food, and water. Conqfish 1, its underwater habitat is prepared before its dive with fresh food, water, and bedding and charcoal and then totally sterilized and prepared for its next dive. -Chris Ladwig

Beatriz- The mice live in Conqfish 1 and the temperature is kept about 70 degrees. The water temperature that Conqfish 1 will be submereged in will be about 68 degrees.

Twyla- Yes. We try to make at least 3 trips a year. 3 weeks ago we camped out overnight inside the Monterey Bay Aquarium in front of the million gallon tank. Air mattressess and sleeping bags. Lots of fun! Our advisor is planning a whale watching trip in April or May to the Channel Islands sanctuary.
