Howdy
My name is Ray Ford and I would like to introduce myself. I will be working with you for the remainder of this year's projects and all of next year as we explore the California Back Country. I live in Santa Barbara and am an avid hiker, writer. I will be part of the team developing the back country curriculum and will most likely see a lot of me. Today I went on the Catalina Express and got sea sick. Then when I got here we found our rooms did a little talking and went on a hike. On the hike I learned about the Catalina Apple Tree. The fruit is not apples but the blossoms look like an apple blossoms. When they come out they look like bananas, but aren't really bananas.

Today I saw a lady feed Moray eels. I learned that you have to feed them with long tongs so they won't bite you. Also the eels are nocternal and usually are asleep during the day, but these eels have been trained to eat during the day.

When we were at Catalina, we went down to the dock and Sheila, who worked there calling the moray eels, feed them, the moray eels, sardines. She said that the moray eels have teeth like neddle pins, and they are very sharp. She said that if you put your hands in the rocks they'll think your food, bite you and try to swollow your hand.

We have Lake Arrowhead at the touch tank now, and Oro Grande will be here in 20-30 minutes. The classes are taking turns seeing / touching the sea creatures while the others visit the scientist's laboratories and see a video. We just went down to the tideline and the kids ate algae and phytoplankton ... they are really having a hands-on - and - a bit of taste buds on too !!
