Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:01PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi all - yes, I am here - SO I hope this is the place!

Jim/Valley View: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:02PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi. Great to be here with all of you.

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:03PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I am not sure if anyone is out there - so I will just share a bit about NASA Quest and some of the online work that we do - that brought us to the SSE project.

Jim/Valley View: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:04PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I'm excited about our chat because I will be developing lessons using NASA sites this summer.

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:04PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We have a series of online project that are designed to introduce students everywhere to the many different people and jobs at NASA.

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:04PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Jim - what NASA sites are you looking at -- for starters anyway! I know there are many.

Oro Grande Elementry school: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Andrea we are Here

Jim/Valley View: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
At which grade levels do you focus?

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello again Oro Grande!

Jim/Valley View: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:06PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I know many already and will be accessing more as part of the Teachers reaching Teachers program through vons.

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:07PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Jim - Our focus is middle school - as we don't have the resources to develop materials for all levels. As our focus is interactivity via the Internet - we try and select topics that can be understood by many levels of audiences

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:08PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I heard something about Teaching Reaching Teachers today - is it a conference in Virginia - or did I get it wrong?

Janice/Lk. Arhd: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:08PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Andrea and all, I'm very interested in the classroom connection to NASA> It would be a great School to Career opportunity.

Ms. Glenn: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:10PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello "Andrea, Happy to see you here. We were looking forward to hearing from you. We have a lot of people here tonight.

Jim/Valley View: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:10PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The program I'm talking about is at Thacher School in Ojai, CA this summer.

Janice/Lk. Arhd: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:11PM PST (-0800 GMT)
EVen though your focus is middle school, I have been fortunate enought through Camp Internet to experience interperter work with the Channel Island Symposium and bringing that into classrooms so I am sure it could be done to elementary also.

Coder Oro Grande Elementary: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:11PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Andrea McCurdy. Thank you for chatting with us tonight.

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:12PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Janice - We do try and focus on encouraging folks to stick with their scientific and technical interests by showing that many people working at NASA are regular types ---- Not just rocket scientists. There are many wonderful things you can do -- IN ADDITION -- to being an astronaut!

Twyla: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:13PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello what part of the SSE do you like the most?

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:13PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Jim - sounds interesting is it just for the folks in your district?

Jim/Valley View: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:13PM PST (-0800 GMT)
CI is great and so is NASA, so I expect the combintion to be awesome.

Gabriel Oro Grande School 6th Grade: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:13PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Andrea how are you? Im fine.

Coder Oro Grande Elementary: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:14PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Which NASA center do you work at?

Jim/Valley View: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:15PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I think it is for teachers throughout CA. I applied online. It is sponsored by Vons and CA Dept. of Ed.

Janice/Lk. Arhd: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:15PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I already have 4th graders who have been working with Camp Internet over the past year asking how they can find out from the web such things as How does Star Dust work w/o engines, it would also encourage reading of current magazines and newspapers

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:15PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Janice - Yes - we do have many folks online that are from elementary schools - interaction, we find works for all ages!

Janice/Lk. Arhd: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:16PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Do you have a website my budding meterologist could log on to?

Gabriel Oro Grande School 6th Grade: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
It was very cool to be at Catalina because I got to learn about diferent animals and plants. What do you like about Catalina.

Coder Oro Grande Elementary: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Andrea, do you like working for NASA?

Janice/Lk. Arhd: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I would be very interested in continuing my interpretive work with CI in connection with NASA. Going to a convention or other event and then using that info to put on the CI site. I LOVE SCIENCE

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Twyla - I love working with SSE as I have not had much opportunity in my life to explore the ocean - I was raised in Southern Illinois - My father was a teacher and worked a great deal with the National Parks - I have been to most of them! It is a treat to find myself working with the ocean which I have some to love in my adult life and to be able to work with fols that are trying to create environments in the ocean much like what I have enjoyed as a child and as an adult. -- I know, long answer!

Shane : . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:18PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What is SSE ?

kaylee: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi Andrea! What is your favorite part of your job?

Coder Oro Grande Elementary: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
At Catalina I learned a lot of interesting things like the differences between a seal and a sea lion?

Twyla/Regina: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
regina- I enjoyed the Touch Tank on my trip to Catalina. I enjoyed touching the Sea Hare and Sea Cucumber. They felt like soggy marshmellows.

Shane : . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:19PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What was youre most succesfull project at SSE ?

Janice/Lk. Arhd: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Oro Grande - We too loved Catalina, the whole experience was great - I especially liked the lecture by Dr. Bushing about his Kelp Research.

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Janice - I cannot suggest a web site for you folks - we have some great stuff on quest.arc.nasa.gov/mars

kaylee: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Andrea. why did you pick to work for NASA?

Gabriel, Sarah,Oro Grande School 6th Grade: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:22PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Andrea would you like to hear some of the things we did at Catalina?

Twyla/Regina: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:23PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Twyla- On the trip I enjoyed the live chat with our school that Coder and I did. I also enjoyed the hike and learning about the California Apple Tree. It is not an apple tree it is just called that because of the blossoms look like apple blossoms.

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:23PM PST (-0800 GMT)
About my job... I work from my home in Bend, Oregon. I am employed out of Ames Research Center in Mt. View, California. - I will say that the ability to work at a job I love and have worked hard to create in a community that fits my lifestyle is a treat! As for the NASA part - I love that there is NO way that I can ever stop learning. It is impossible - there is always something new that has happened or we have experienced or some combination of the two that results in never-ending possibilities or ideas!

Coder & Jared: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:24PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What do you acually do at NASA?

kaylee: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:25PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Andrea,do you like your job? I think that would be a very fun job.

Stephinie Oro Gande: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:25PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What I enjoyed about Catalina was, the touch tank. It is a big tank that has sea animals that you can touch. My favorite animal was the sea hair.It looked like a big ball of goo! Bye and thanks for listining.

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:25PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Gabriel -I would like to hear what you all have done at Catalina - did you go to learn something in specific - what did you see?

Gabriel, Sarah,Oro Grande School 6th Grade: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:26PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What we liked at Catalina was the touch tank because it had lots of marine mamals.

Twyla/Regina: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:27PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Have you ever been on Catalina Island or any of the Islands?

Coder & Jared: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:27PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Coder- I also learned about the sonar pollution detecter. It sends sounds up a mile in the sky and the sounds bounce off any particles in the air.

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:28PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Coder and Kaylee - It is a fun job. I began working on the Internet with educators about seven years ago and it has been an amazing experience! Currently (as it always is changing) I produce live/interactive events for students and teachers on the Internet. We are trying bring you to many of the places that you can see on TV - but we are trying add the your ability to ask YOUR questions.

kaylee: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:28PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Andrea,do you ever have people come for field trips? If I went there for a field trips I know it would be so fun.

Alejandra / Oro Grande: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:28PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What else can you be besides an austronaut?

Janice/Lk. Arhd: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:29PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Andrea - thanks for the web site we will check it out

David : . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:29PM PST (-0800 GMT)
what are you

Crystal Silva: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:30PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi the best thing when I was on Catalina was I got to fell the sea hair, crab, and all the other fish we go to fell. And the boat ride over there.

Alejandra / Oro Grande: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:31PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Do you map kelp ?

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:31PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Twyla/Regina - As we prepared for the event on Anacapa Island for SSE - we spent two nights on the island. It was great. The colors as the sun set were off of the scale! The birds and a moon near full - made for a busy time! We could hear the birds active all night. I will admit I slept a lot - more than I should have as the air and the calm were just too relaxing for me to resist!

kaylee: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:32PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Have you ever seen a space shuttle take off?

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:32PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Kaylee- my goup does not offer field trips - but you can call the education office at JPL or Ames - and they will be happy to arrange a tour.

Janice/Lk.Arhd Elem: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Andrea - when we went to Catalina, we stayed at the USC wrigley's marine center. We really liked the nature hikes and we even saw an island fox early one morning.

Gabriel, Sarah,Oro Grande School 6th Grade: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)
some of the things we learned were about sea lions and seals.

Crystal Silva: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:34PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I also liked the classes they gave us on kelp forest I learened a lot that I did'nt know before.

kaylee: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:34PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Do you ever get bored with your job?

Jim/Valley View: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:34PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We were surprised at how loud the birds were when we visited Anacapa. Were they loud all night?

Janice/Lk.Arhd Elem: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:35PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Alahandra - Oro Granda, No we didn't map kelp but we saw a lot of very interesting GIS maps Dr. Bushing had made. THey showed a lot of change.

Coder Oro Grande Elementary: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:35PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Have you ever eaten kelp or fennel?

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:36PM PST (-0800 GMT)
At NASA you can be many things other than an astronaut - there are many different kinds of scientists and engineers and graphics artists and historians and geologists and biologists and writers and accountants and photographers and ... well ... oceanographers! As you can see - many different people work together to support space and earth exploration missions!

Janice/Lk.Arhd Elem: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:37PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Coder - Yum the fennel was a treat, we didn't eat any kelp did you?

Gabriel, Sarah,Oro Grande School 6th Grade: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:37PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We learn about how the itruduce plants got there and how the buffalo got there would you like to hear how the buffalos got there?

Alejandra / Oro Grande: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:37PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Wene you'v maped plant's have you ever seen eny othor animal's ?

Crystal Silva: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:37PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Andrea when we on Catalina island we stayed in really cool apartmentsit was fun.

kaylee: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:37PM PST (-0800 GMT)
When you were in school what was your favorite subject? Mine is reading.

Coder Oro Grande Elementary: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:38PM PST (-0800 GMT)
yes I did and it tasted just like salt.

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:38PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I did get to see a launch last October - I was doing a live Internet event covering the launch when John Glenn did his historic mission. It is a very moving experience - you can feel the sound move through your body - ... about 30 seconds after the shuttle leaves the launch pad!

Gabriel, Sarah,Oro Grande School 6th Grade: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:38PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We learn about how the itroduced plants got there and how the buffalo got there would you like to hear how the buffalos got there?

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:40PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I would love to hear how the buffalo got to Catalina - my husband has his version ... I will compare!

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:40PM PST (-0800 GMT)
I am sorry if I am missing some of your questions - if you want, feel free to ask again.

Janice/Lk.Arhd Elem: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:41PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Andrea can you tell me how Star Dust works w/o engines in space?

kaylee: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What area is your office at?

Coder Oro Grande Elementary: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:43PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Have you ever tasted fennel or kelp?

kaylee: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:43PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Have you ever been up in space yourself?

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:43PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Do I get bored - well, I suspect that is all part of the human condition - but I will say I am never bored for long! Sometimes work is overwhelming and I have to do more simple things to keep from allowing boredom to settle in - I love to take my car for a drive into the mountains and find a trail - there is usually something interesting to be found. This is one reason why I live in a somewhat rural place.

Twyla: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:44PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We had to get to Catalina on a bus that means Lets Go. The bus was really nice it had TV's, a.c., a VCR and a bathroom.

AnderA IS it hard working with SSE

Claudia: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
My favorite thing about Catalina was, the touch tank. What I liked about it was the hemit crab because it was so small and it tickled in my hand.

I will answer a few questions - my office is in Central Oregon, I have not tasted fennel or kelp - and I have not been to space -- I imagine diving is as close as we all get to it...

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:48PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Claudia - I have touched a few sea creatures myself - it is pretty wild. Do you plan to dive one day?

Janice/Lk.Arhd Elem: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:51PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Andrea - Thanks for your time, I trust our paths will cross again

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:52PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Oro Grande - it is hard working on SSE but not with SSE - I am having the time of my life. As the ocean is an unpredictable place to work - it creates many challenges for us all. The SSE project has created an exciting environment for teamwork - as we all share a common mission and are constantly rethinking how to accomplish that goal and work with everyone to reach it!

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:53PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Janice -- I will look forward to it -- thanks for coming along - sorry if I lost you in the numbers!

Jim/Valley View: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:54PM PST (-0800 GMT)
What can we who live in the desert and away from the ocean do for SSE?

Ms. Glenn: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:58PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Thank you so much for talking with us tonight. Everyone has left. ONe cookie left. Hopefully we will be able to set something up later.

Jim/Valley View: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:58PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Good bye

Andrea/NASAQuest: . . . . Tue, Jun 8, 7:59PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Jim - Hmmm -- I was talking with Laura at SSE about exploring this very topic. I suspect the folks at RAIN may help you answer that before we do! I understand that they will be taking their project inland to explore how US 'inlanders' impact the oceans. As for SSE - I think reading what you can about the missions and their goals over time will inspire you to your own ideas. This is the good thing about SSE - it will continue for at least five years - I trust this will provide much time for individual learning and generation of ideas ocean preservation.

Ms Glenn - go get the cookie! Thanks for your thoughts and questions - bye to all!
