Here are three categories of plants on Catalina ..........The words native, endemic and exotic or non-native are important distinctions for ecologists. They may defined as: ........................ NATIVE: a species which dispersed to a given region or location prior to the arrival of humans, and therefore by non-human mechanisms .................... ENDEMIC: a species which is only found in a given region or location and nowhere else in the world. This definition requires that the region that the species is endemic to be defined, such as a Santa Catalina Island endemic (just found on Santa Catalina Island), or a Channel Islands endemic (found on one or more of the southern California Channel Islands), or a California endemic (found only in the state of California). .................. EXOTIC or NON-NATIVE: a species which is known with reasonable certainty to have dispersed to a region or location due to direct or indirect human actions. For example, the common pigeon (which is native to Europe) is a non-native species in the United States because it was intentionally introduced by people. Likewise, the goats, pigs, deer and bison are non-native to Catalina because human beings brought them here and they did not disperse to the island via "natural" (non-human) mechanisms.

There is a NATIVE plant on Catalina, that lives at Wrigley, that also lives in the Coachella Valley - can you name it? (HINT - it has borad round 'leaves' with thorny spikes).
