last night we sawthe bioluminesence. Today we saw some morrey eels, they were being fed on the rocks. They actually came out of the water to get a fish.

valley view Alyssa: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 10:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
My most favorite experience of the expedition was the touch tank. We got to touch different types of sea creatures. One of the things we touched were called sea cucumber. We also got to hold a star fish that had some sort of spines on the back of it. Before she passed the starfish around she showed us how it pulled out our hair on our hands. The hike was fun and we saw many things along the way. I liked when she fed the eels and we got to see them eat. Different fish that also ate the fish that she fed to the eels. The eels and the other fish had fight for the food.

jessica/tabitha: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 10:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Last night there were leopard sharks swimming around the shore near the pier.

Gabi and Alyssa victoria : . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 10:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
There was some plants called crystaline ice plant, cheese weed, ripgut grass, Catalina live forever, toyon, Catalina wild apple, little ice plant, black mustard, foxtail cheat, wild oat, Cali.sage bush, and salt bush .

jessica/tabitha: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 10:59AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The crystal weed got its name because it looked like it has little crystals all over it.

jessica/tabitha: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:00AM PST (-0800 GMT)
There was also wilde cucumber growing among some other plants.

Gabi and Alyssa victoria : . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Ice plant was eatable. It tasted very juicy and salty. Me and Gabi thinks that it was very gross. Ripgut grass really does rip your guts. if you eat it it will get caught in your stomach.

Kylie, Krista: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We saw some lepard sharks, they were in a pretty shallow part of the water, they are femals, that are going to have somw babies, warmer water makes the baby sharks grow faster. The Morea Eels can be qquite mean, but dont been to be, the person, Mareen, fed them. They used to be fed by hand, but now there not, beacause someone got there hand in one of there mouths, and that person tried to take it out, when her hand went backwards the fleash on her hand got ripped off. Whenever there is Eucalicptus trees around, there isnt any flees. Beacause there is something about it that they dont like. Do NOT ever eat rip gut grass, otherwise, as its name states, it WILL rip up your guts!

Noel/Sianna: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The weather at Catalina Island was breezy. last night it was covered with low clouds and we couldn't even see the moon or the stars.

Rodolfo, Valley View: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The weather was a light fog. In the afternoon it was kind of cold and sunny.

jessica/tabitha: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
we saw the black musterd seed yesterday , it was used to make dijon mustard.

Rodolfo, Valley View: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:08AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We saw a plant called Wild-Apple. It has seeds that look like bananas and when you open the seeds the stuff in the inside looks like a caterpillar. They call it the Wild-Apple because the pods look the same as an apple tree’s pods.

Rodolfo, Valley View: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:12AM PST (-0800 GMT)
In Catalina I saw a Ground Squirrel and a Red Tail Hawk.

victoria3Danielle: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:19AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I saw, smelt, and tasted many plants. Some plants that I saw were Fennel, Cheeseweed, Black Mustard, Australian salt bush, California sage brush, Wild cucumbers, lemonade berry, Catalina live forever, and the Crystaline ice plant. I tasted some interesting plants, such as fennel, the crystaline ice plant, and wild oat.

Rodolfo, Valley View: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:21AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The most amizing thing Ilearned is that there are coyotes and buffalo’s in Catalina.

victoria3-Kirsten: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:22AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi! I'm here at Catalina from June 6-7. I saw some really cool plants, like the crystal ice plant (which tasted salty), the fennel (whcih tasted like black licorice), the toyon (which has little red berries), the lemonade berry (which can be made into lemonade), and the prickly pear cactus (which has an edible fruit). While here, we saw a lot of neat animals. Some of them were the moray eel (whcih we saw feeding), the seaweed crab (whcih is incredebly tiny), the giant keyhole limpit (which has a hole on its top that looks like a keyhole), the leopard sharks (which there are millions of), and many others. One of the neatest things we saw at Catalina was the hyperbaric chamber. It is used to help divers with bends and others things like that have a chance to vbe made better. You can adjust the level of presure so you can make the diver better. It was really cool!

Rodolfo, Valley View: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The thing that I liked the most is touching the animals.

victoria3Danielle: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:26AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I saw some beautiful and strange animals. Some animals that I saw were Leopard sharks, Catalina ladybugs, which have no spots, Kelp crabs, seaweed crabs, keyhole limpits, sea cucumbers, moray eels, and sea hares.

Cindy: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We saw some plants that were edible including the crystal ice plant, the little ice plant, the fennel, and the black muster. The crystal ice plant and the little ice plant were both very salty. The fennel tasted exactly like black licorice and the black muster tasted like mustard. Some plants which we were careful never to eat were the rip gut grass and the prickly pear cactus. At the touch tank I found a lot of sea hares, sea cucumbers, seaweed, and many kinds of starfish. The sea hares and sea cucumbers felt like you were touching satin or something slimy. Many knobby starfish would clasp to the hair on your skin for protection. Some fish that I saw were the garaboldi, the flying fish, and the leopard sharks. The garaboldi fish looked of a bright orange. We heard a story of a flying fish knocking a person unconcious. That's how fast they fly! They fly if a predator is chasing them. I learned the leopard sharks here at Catalina are all female and they give birth to live babies. We were given a visit to the hyperbaric chamber. I found it pretty scary in there. A hyperbaric chamber treats people who have too much pressure in their lungs. They put them in the hyperbaric chamber and put them back down to the depth to where they were at. When they bring them back up to the surface, they fill their lungs with oxygen, so their lungs will not explode. This helps them heal, but some people are not that fortunate.

victoria3-Jane: . . . . Thu, Jun 7, 11:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We saw many plants on the 2 mile hike and some we tasted. The fennel tasted like black licorice and the black mustard tasted lika mustard. The chrystal ice plant and the little ice plant tasted very salty. An interesting plant is the Wild Apple tree. It looks like an apple (but isn't) it looks like a banana, (but isn't) and it looks like a worm (but isn't). When we saw the touch tanks there were many animals. I liked the sea hare because it felt so soft. We went out to the barge and saw leopard sharks. At night we got to go outside and look at the animals there. We saw flying fish and bass. In the morning we saw Darlene feed the moray eels that looked very hungry. We got to go to a hyperbaric chamber, which is a pressurized chamber. The chamber helps relieve people. The shortest opperation took 4 hours and 45 minutes. An opperation could take up to 12 hours.

Plants: Some of the plants that we learned about and saw on our hike included ripgut grass, crystalline iceplant, cheese weed, wild cucumber, Catalina wild apple, foxtail cheat, and many more. One thing that we learned about ripgut grass, is that when an human, animal, or an insect eats this grass it will get stuck inside them and eventually tear up their guts. Ice plant when you eat it is very salty! Fennal tastes like black licorice. Prickly pear is a type of cactus that bears delicous but you best not grab it with your hands or you will be pricked by the cactus' spines. Catalina wild apple is not exactly what it seems the flowers of this tree look like apple blossoms but they are not. Animals: Today we had the oppurtunity to watch one of the scientists feed the eels. I was surprised to hear that these monarays are actually not eels they are fish! In their little harbor that they have here, female leopard sharks come to stay during the warm spring, summer, and early fall days. Catalina is home to the ladybugs who do not have spotts. Last night while our teacher was swimming in the water he showed us the biolumenesense plankton which sometimes will glow when you move around in the water. Hyperbaric Chamber: We had the oppurtunity to go inside of this diving emergency chamber. While they are adding depth to the chamber the tempeture will slowly rise, once they got the tempeture up to 140 degrees F, and the lowest the got it was 32 degrees F! When divers don't exhale when they take a breath from there tank their lungs will slowly expand until they pop. In order to help the diver they put them in this chamber and slowly add more depth. The diver will stay in here for a minimum of four and and forty-five minutes. The longest that a person would be able to stay in here would be for twelve hours.
