Winter Family Astronomy Night

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Welcome to Camp Internet’s Winter Astronomy Night – Wish on a Star We have THREE ACTIVITIES available tonight – - - - Use ONLINE STAR CHARTS to identify constellations, make open air observations and then post your findings here online. Another is to jump into the ASTRONOMY DIG hosted below to learn more about our Solar System. And a third is to SELECT A STAR in the night sky from the charts below, send request to a remote access telescope at UC Santa Barbara, and to later find that image – your requested star – available to you online in the weeks to come. We will also post a gallery of images the telescope gathered at Camp student’s requests. Camp has its own Astronomy Section for any participant to explore at button

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
ONE >>>>For those who would like to study STAR CHARTS and then go outside and identify CONSTELLATIONS, or the Moon, and come back and tell us about what you observed, we have a link to a room that has the star charts for you. ...... To reach the STAR CHARTS, click on this button and enter the FAMILY NIGHT STAR CHART ROOM with its BIG star charts, and then come back here to post you findings ....

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:43AM PST (-0800 GMT)
TWO >>>> If you are ready to send in a request to the REMOTE ACCESS TELESCOPE, that will tell a remote robotic telescope to take a picture of the star you request (as long as it is visible in the night sky) and then make that image available to you in the week’s to come, you need to do three steps. Begin with looking over our introductory page to RAAP button and view / listen to the recording at the bottom of the page if your computers is enabled. Then ……… 1. Take a look at the star request form online that you will need to fill out button ………….. 2. Look for the stars coordinates (Sirius, Canopus, Capella, Rigel, Betelgeuse, Aldebaran, Pollux, Adhara, and Castor are the most visible this time of year ) on this star chart to get their coordinates button ………….. 3. Go back into the star request form and fill out your star location and information. Be sure to note where it says school name Your School/Camp Internet so they know which group you are with. It will send back to you a confirmation of what your star file will be called, so please forward that confirmation message to us here camp@campitnernet.net so we can help get the images to you in a viewable format.

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:43AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Here is a selection of Wish on a Star images captured earlier by the RAAP telescope for Camp Internet students - - - Galaxy m51 in black and white Same galaxy with cool color filters and then same galaxy as a close up

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:45AM PST (-0800 GMT)
THREE >>>>Now, Let's go on an INTERNET DIG ....... In this learning activity your Camp Internet Trail Guides are going to CHALLENGE YOU! We will be asking you questions and providing links where you can find the answers…. Come tell us all what you discover …. The message box where you can post is down below – be sure to include your NAME and SCHOOL NAME in the Your Handle box before posting …………. Here we go:

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:45AM PST (-0800 GMT)
……. Internet Dig Challenge #1 --- The star closest to us is our Sun, and the planets around the sun form our solar system. How many known planets are in our solar system ? button . What are their names ? button

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:45AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #2 --- Adopt a Planet – select on of the planets at this NASA site and tell us about it. button

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:45AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #3 – Let’s think about our closest heavenly neighbor – the Moon ……… Did you know many farmers around the world plant their crops based on phases of the moon and all carefully watch the seasons of the year to try to get the longest growing season? Go to the Farmer’s Almanac and tell us – what is the name of the full moon this month ? button

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #4 – When does the moon rise on your birthday ? Use this handy chart to find out button

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #5 – Beyond our solar system are many stars that form our galaxy. And beyond that are thousands of more galaxies – deep space is an area so vast we do not know how big it really is. Isn’t that MIND BOGGLING ??? ………. But closer to home – What is the name of our galaxy and how did it get its name ? button

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #6 – Astronomers have been a part of human society for many thousands of years. Tour a few of their ancient observatories – or monuments built in alignment with the stars - and tell us which one you think is the most AMAZING …… Mayan Temple button Anasazi Stone Observatory button Egyptian Pyramid button Lakota Medicine Wheel button - or – Stonehenge as shown at the top of the page ?

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:46AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #7 – Native Americans have been studying the stars for thousands of years and passing their knowledge down through the generations – both as oral science and as mythological stories told around campfires. In this Gabrielino/Tongva story, Coyote’s selfishness and misdeeds leads to the creation of what star and constellation in the night sky ? button

Family Night Guides: . . . . Thu, Jan 31, 11:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #8 --- Today, Astronomers have fascinating jobs studying the universe. What do Astronomers look for in outer space? ……….. One of the things they look for is to see if there is life on other planets. No, not aliens, but small microscopic forms of life, or, maybe a planet covered with plants. But they have a problem. Stars – the suns that warm other planets – are so bright it is currently impossible to directly observe any planets out there circling around those star-suns……… One of NASA’s proposed projects is to launch special telescopes that can block out the light of a distant star and actually photograph visual proof of other planets – and – possibly, LIFE on other planets………. Here are models of the telescopes they plan to use – they are called Terrestrial Planet Finders … If you were an astronomer, and YOU discovered life on another planet – what kind of life would you like it to be?

Hi everyone. Palm View and Valley View joined together. We joined the chat, but most exciting was viewing Jupiter, the Orion Nebula, and Saturn. We saw these with the unaided eye, through binoculars, and a telescope. It's too bad we didn't have a camera to photograph through the telescope. It was a great evening. Good-bye.

Can anyone see LEO tonight ? It should be 'walking' over the moon according to the star chart .... And up in the north sky is DRACO - do you know what DRACO is ? One of the early European explorers/privateers to the Pacifc side of the New World was Sir Francis Drake - known to the Spanish he attacked as THE DRAGON - and that is what DRACO also means ! A pirate in the sky ??? OR - an ancient dinosaur?? The Chinese were the first people in the world to discover dinosaur bones over 2,000 years ago and they thought they were the bones of DRAGONS ! Maybe SRACO is a Chinese dragon/ dinosaur in the sky ?

We have to say good-bye. Thank you very much for having this wonderful family night. Our students at Sunset really had a great time and really enjoyed learning and observing the planets, stars, and constellations.

I hope we can get together more often with various subject matter. With most kids its good to prep and often have them plan what they are going to post to get right to the point of the learning. Anyway thanks from Fleming and we are Star-Signing out for a great night, Camp Internet. Keep up the fabulous inspiring work.
