Hi, I am Shelley from Nightingale MS. We are about to eat dinner and about to learn about the telescopes. We will have a few people come t oour school and tell us about the telescopes. We will also be able to control a telescope in Santa Barabra.

Ashley, Nightingale M.S.: . . . . Thu, Dec 12, 5:49PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hi! I'm Ashley. Tonight we are going to have a family astronomy night. We're going to hve supper and we are going to control a telescope from Santa Barbara from here in Los Angeles.

Wendy, Nightingale MS: . . . . Thu, Dec 12, 5:51PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hey! We are the nightingale students. We are just about to have dinner. We are very fortunate today due to the oppurtunity we are given to control a telescope in Santa Barbara.

G. Jones, ICS Hong Kong: . . . . Thu, Dec 12, 5:54PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Greetings to Nightingale Middle School from Hong Kong! Students in Grades 7 and up may remember me. Last January we had quite a few students/parents in Mr. Myerhoffs and the computer lab, looking up information/stars on the computers, looking through the telescope, etc. Hope you have an even better turn out this year. Miss you all and hope this Astronomy Night is even better than last years.

Mrs. Gomes, Nightignle MS, Los Angeles, USA: . . . . Thu, Dec 12, 5:57PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello! Hong Kong, Miss Jones can probably envision our activities tonight because last January we did the same activities as we are going to do tonight. This time we have the Sidewalk Astronomers coming with their homemade telescopes to capture the night sky for us. It has been unbelievably clear and the heavens have been full of stars even in our big city. We will come back in a few minutes to chat more. Now it's time to have supper.

G. Jones, ICS Hong Kong: . . . . Thu, Dec 12, 6:00PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We are planning to have a star gazing party, with a telescope, once we get back from the winter break. Hope that it is clear enough then for us to see some stars. Sometimes with so many lights on in the city, it is hard to see much in the night sky with the naked eye.

Paradise Homeschool, Buellton CA: . . . . Thu, Dec 12, 6:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
CONSTELLATION SIGHTING - We can see Cassiopea right outside our door big and bold - it is the triangle with a smaller star between the upper star and the lower right star. Our moon is a little more than half full. We can not see stars to the south due to a hill top blocking the view.

Cherry Nightingale MS: . . . . Thu, Dec 12, 6:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)

Hey, are you students here?

Vincent NMS: . . . . Fri, Dec 13, 10:21AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Last Night at Nightingale Middle School we were looking at Saturn, moon, and the Orion Nebula with the telescope that were hand made by people from Santa Barbara. Those telescopes were really tall, they were about 6 feet tall. We stopped looking at about 8:15 thats when we all had to leave.

Erickson Nguon,Nightingale MS: . . . . Fri, Dec 13, 10:22AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yesterday December 13, 2002 we saw Saturn,The Moon, and we saw Orion's Belt. the telescopes were about 6-7 feet tall. There were 2 telescopes. 1 was facing the Moon. The other one was facing Saturn. I was kinda happy i went. Plus we got extra credit for going.

Ashley, NMS: . . . . Fri, Dec 13, 10:23AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Last night I my school Nightingale M.S. had family astronomy night. We had lots of fun. Up on the black top there were two telescopes. Through one we could see Saturn and through the other one we could see the moon. When I saw Saturn it looked as if they just but the figure there like a stencel. While we were on the black top we also saw many stars with the naked eye. We also did an activity inside the classroon in which we saw a star and we located it's coordinates. We also ate but that was it.

Marvin Saul Fuentes,Nightingale MS: . . . . Fri, Dec 13, 10:24AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yesterday we had an astronamy night and we saw through one handmade telescope and one bought telescope. We saw Saturn and the moon. The one for us to see the moon was smaller than the Saturn one.

William Eap, Ninghtingale Middle School: . . . . Fri, Dec 13, 10:25AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yesterday, we got to look at Saturn by using a telescope. We had alot of fun. It was astronomy night. We also got to look at the moon, also by using a telescope.

Fatima Nighingale MS: . . . . Fri, Dec 13, 10:34AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Yesterday we look at saturn and the moon by looking threw telescopes made by the sidewalk astronomers.Shelly and I found stars on ms Gomes computer. We found four stars and one planet(which was saturn). We had fun learning.

Manuela Rios: . . . . Fri, Dec 13, 10:35AM PST (-0800 GMT)
"Hi" it's me again "Nellie". Yesteday last night it was really cool. First we ate a nice nice meal. Second we went to Mrs.Gomes class room, and were finding the cordinets of stars. Third we went to the computer lab and were sending messages to Hong Kong. Fourth we were just talking about how exciting t was going to be, and at the same time we were cleaning up. Fifth we went to the upper yard, and saw Saturn and the Moon through telescopes.

Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Fri, Dec 13, 10:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
STUDENTS - Here is a fun astronomy event you can do at home tonight with your family - Geminids will be visible in the middle of the night. Read more at button What are the Geminids? not your usual meteor or comet!

Nicole Nightingale MS...Ms.Gomes..: . . . . Fri, Dec 13, 11:12AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello, my name is Nicole from Nightingale Middle School. I just finished seeing Jupiter and the moon last night, it was so cool. When I saw Jupiter through the telescope I could see it so clearly. I saw Jupiter and the rings around it,and when I saw the moon, it looked like a ball with little mountains on it .Also the telescope was very interesting to look at and to see through.

Julie Nightingale MS...Ms.Gomes..: . . . . Fri, Dec 13, 11:23AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I am sorry about the mistake on Nicole's field report. Jupiter does not have rings, Saturn does. I apologize for not carefully proofreadig.

ASTRONOMY DIG: . . . . Tue, Dec 3, 11:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)

Internet Dig Challenge #1 Did you know many farmers around the world plant their crops based on phases of the moon and all carefully watch the seasons of the year to try to get the longest growing season? Go to the Farmer’s Almanac and tell us – What is the name of the full moon this month? Then go outside tonight and then come back online tomorrow to tell us what type of moon is in the sky based on its phase, from new to full button

ASTRONOMY DIG: . . . . Tue, Dec 3, 11:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #2 – When does the moon rise on your next birthday ? Use this handy chart to find out button and what is the name of the moon the month of your next birthday ? button

ASTRONOMY DIG: . . . . Tue, Dec 3, 11:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
……. Internet Dig Challenge #3 --- The star closest to us is our Sun, and the planets around the sun form our solar system. How many known planets are in our solar system ? button . What are their names ? button

ASTRONOMY DIG: . . . . Tue, Dec 3, 11:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #4 --- Adopt a Planet – select on of the planets at this NASA site and tell us about it. button

ASTRONOMY DIG: . . . . Tue, Dec 3, 11:55AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #5 – Beyond our solar system are many stars that form our galaxy. And beyond that are thousands of more galaxies – deep space is an area so vast we do not know how big it really is. Isn’t that MIND BOGGLING ??? ………. But closer to home – What is the name of our galaxy and how did it get its name ? button

ASTRONOMY DIG: . . . . Tue, Dec 3, 11:55AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #6 – Astronomers have been a part of human society for many thousands of years. Tour a few of their ancient observatories – or monuments built in alignment wit the stars - and tell us which one you think is the most AMAZING …… Mayan Temple button Anasazi Stone Observatory button Egyptian Pyramid button Lakota Medicine Wheel button - or – Stonehenge as shown at the top of the page ?

ASTRONOMY DIG: . . . . Tue, Dec 3, 11:55AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #7 – Native Americans have been studying the stars for thousands of years and passing their knowledge down through the generations – both as oral science and as mythological stories told around campfires. In this Gabrielino/Tongva story, Coyote’s selfishness and misdeeds leads to the creation of what star and constellation in the night sky ? button

ASTRONOMY DIG: . . . . Tue, Dec 3, 11:55AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Internet Dig Challenge #8 --- Today, Astronomers have fascinating jobs studying the universe. What do Astronomers look for in outer space? ……….. One of the things they look for is to see if there is life on other planets. No, not aliens, but small microscopic forms of life, or, maybe a planet covered with plants. But they have a problem. Stars – the suns that warm other planets – are so bright it is currently impossible to directly observe any planets out there circling around those star-suns……… One of NASA’s proposed projects is to launch special telescopes that can block out the light of a distant star and actually photograph visual proof of other planets – and – possibly, LIFE on other planets………. Here are models of the telescopes they plan to use – they are called Terrestrial Planet Finders … If you were an astronomer, and YOU discovered life on another planet – what kind of life would you like it to be?

To Jon Wu - I think your question about what I find in my work might mean when I study the night sky? ....... I study the night sky with my 10 yr old daughter and we watch as the constellations change overhead through out the year. There have been two spectacular sightings I have made that I can share - one was a night of meteors where there where literally dozens in the sky at the same time zipping every which way. I was standing on a narrow ridge and they seemed to be all around me .. acutally they were very far away, but it was remarkable... like standing in the middle of a fireworks display ...... The other thing I have seen was even more remarkable, and was so astounding I could barely talk about it for a few days. In 2001, a few days after New Years, I saw a huge orange-white glowing orb moving horizontally through the sky with a long burning tail. It seemed as through it was right in our valley, and then it seemed to pause, break into 4-5 smaller orbs, and then darted off again out of sight. I was not sure if it was a UFO or a meteor. It was incredible. Since there was nothing in the local paper about it - and I emailed them and they knew nothing about it - I was really wondering WHAT IT WAS ! Then finally someone found an article in the Los Angels paper saying a meteor had been sighted so I think that must have been what it was. But the pause, breaking into smaller balls, and then rushing off again seemed very very unusual ..... what do YOU think I saw ?

What direction does the moon orbit the earth ? Like the sun, it moves from east to west. Which way that moves compared to clockwise has to do with which way you are facing as you watch. If you are facing towards the Northpole then it would appear to be moving counterclockwise. But if you face the south pole it would appear to be clockwise. All a matter of orientation. Which way do you face when you watch the moon ?

Jupiter, the gas planet, is so big that all of the other planets in the solar system could fit inside in it. It is made of hydrogen and helium gases. It shines very brightly in the night sky for nine months of the year when it is closest to Earth. Jupiter has sixteen moons and one of them has active volcanoes.

Answer to Internet Challenge Dig #4 Information on planet Pluto.... It is the farthest planet from the sun, and has a wierd orbit. It also has a moon which is half its own size, making it seem like a double planet. Experts believe that Pluto is actually one of Neptune's moons who escaped somehow. What a wierd planet.

Joseph R asked about the Chumash and other Native American ideas about the Milky Way. The answers can be found at button and it is also very interesting to note that the departure point for Chumash souls, on their way to the Milky Way, was Point Conception - in Spanish this translates as the name for being 'conceived' as in coming to life on earth. It is a sacred piece of land to the Chumash and they have had to fight to protect it. Can you find it on a map ? It is the large promonotory north of Santa Barbara. Same area where nearby is now a commerical space launch .. interesting coincidence? Do all paths lead to the Milky Way ?

Question #8: Adopt a Planet – select on of the planets at this NASA site and tell us about it. Answer: Pieces of Mars have been found on Earth. Not big chunks, but rocks. On Mars it can be really really cold even on the warmest day it can still be very cold. The dirt on Mars which containes clay was found to be rich in iron, and it is that iron that gives Mars it's red color. These are some of the other things that Mars have: some of the tallest volcanoes, and craters which were formed by astroids. Mars has two moons called Phobos and Deimos. Sandra and Jonathan - my role at Camp Internet is as the Education Director - not just astronomy but many subjects. I always find that one of the most interesting aspect of any subject is not only the subject itself - but how people have perceived it over time. As far as astronomy, I recommend a good book called 'Coming of Age in the Milky Way'. It is a good read about the history of astronomy - mostly European but not only. How understadning the stars and the earth's relationship to the stars changed human cultures - some times causing quite a stir! ...... personally, I really enjoy pre-historic archaeoastronomy - like the Fajada Butte solar slabs and rock art you can read about at button
