MAY 13, 2003 - The day started out at 4:00am. The noise of the engine woke me. I didn’t care, I wanted to get up early anyway. My friend Matt and I got dressed and went into the galley. Others were out other already, talking. Matt and I looked at the brochures about Santa Rosa. Nothing happened for 2 hours until it got lighter. The water at sunrise is spectacular. The trip to the island was just as breathtaking as the island itself. The fog hid the island till we were close enough to see the trees. Some of the trees that we saw were only native to that island and somewhere near San Diego.

We moored off the island to eat breakfast and learn about the GPS. Since I was handed the digital camera, that’s what I learned about. I let Matt learn the GPS. While I looked through the manual for the camera, Matt had a lesson about the GPS Once we were on the island, Matt showed me how to use it in less than 5 minutes! It was childishly simple, a monkey could have learned about it. But I’m glad a monkey didn’t get to because when I got to use it, it was something that I cannot put into words. It was a feeling of endless curiosity and gratefulness to everyone that made it possible to get here at 30 N Long and 120 W Lat (of course the GPS told me that!)

As we walked on the trail being bombarded with facts, Matt and I went to a function on the GPS unit that showed a picture of a humanoid walking and leaving a trail. That humanoid was us and the trail was the trail we took! We walked three miles through the beautiful landscape that varied from a small creek to a Chumash seashell dump. We stopped occasionally to listen to the fact-filled volunteer naturalists. When we got to the end of the trail, we were to go our separate ways. Matt and I relaxed a little then followed our incredible GPS Matt and I left on the second trip to the boat in a zodiac. I was sorry to leave the island, but happy to use the GPS on the boat. On the way back, we toured the coastline of Santa Cruz and we drove part way into Painted Cave. This cave was really large and breathtaking. After that we saw some whales near Santa Cruz. It was pretty cool, but we didn’t get very close. Soon we headed home. An hour or so later, we saw a mega pod of common dolphins. There were so many, that the naturalist said that for every one on the surface, there were at least 6 to 7 below! After that we headed home.

I will never forget a trip like this one, and I thank everyone that made it possible.
