Find the Lone Woman – Can You SCOOP the Sacramento Reporter ? We challenge you to follow the directions below and prepare a short news report about this historic event – and if you need – to use the DIG questions to help you research the story.

Camp Guide: . . . . Tue, Sep 25, 8:38AM PST (-0800 GMT)
This amazing story is most amazing because it is based on a TRUE story. Many people have written accounts of the Lone Woman’s experiences over the year, it has been the basis for an award-winning book, and it became a popular movie. When a written story is true, it is called non-fiction. When it is an invented story, it is called fiction. When it is an invented story based on loose historical events, it is called historical fiction. It has been over 150 years ago this year since the first rescue party went out to search for the Lone Woman of San Nicolas to rescue her from her 18 year isolation on the most remote Channel Island. But all they saw as a ghostly apparition beckoning to them. It was in 1853 that she was finally found and rescued.

“The wild woman who was found on the island of San Nicolas about 70 miles from the coast, west of Santa Barbara, is now at the latter place and is looked upon as a curiosity. It is stated she has been some 18 to 20 years alone on the island. She existed on shell fish and the fat of the seal, and dressed in the skins and feathers of wild ducks, which she sewed together with sinews of the seal. She cannot speak any known language, is good-looking and about middle age. She seems to be contented in her new home among the good people of Santa Barbara. “

Each Camp student has a variety of resources at their disposal to learn about this legendary woman. You can combine resources – film, book, online historical accounts – to write their own 100-or-more-word news article that would have been a description of her ordeal and rescue. Publication date would be October 12th, 1853 and they can ‘scoop’ the above Sacramento writer. In July of 1835, a woman named Maria Juana lived on an island with 25 other indians. When people came to take the 25 people away on a ship Maria Juana forgot her baby on the island so she jumped off the ship to find him. When she got to the island she looked around for her baby but she couldn't find him. Maria Juan was left on the island for 18 years. Ships would go looking for her, but they couldn't find her because she would hide from them. Maria lived off of food like fish and other animals too. On the island Maria tamed puppies because the puppies mother died. Maria made her own low roofless enclosures using woven brush. When Captain George Nidiver went to the island he found a basket of rushes hanging in a tree. He also found footprints of slender bare feet along the island. George Nidiver saw something moving in the trees and it was Maria Juana, who was hiding behind the trees. She greeted the men with food and she went back to Santa Barbara with them.

Special Bulletin, major discovery The Lone Women called Karana was discovered! She lived on an island named San Nicolas .She lived there alone for 18 years because when the Spanish people went for her, she stayed because her little brother was still on the island. She survived on the island because she lived on sharks, seal's blubber, roots, shell- fish and the birds, whose skin she secured for clothing. Her little brother were killed by the wolves. In the 1850's a guy named Father Gonzalez ,offered $200 to Thomas Jefferies to locate and find a child and bring her to Santa Barbara alive. Then 15 years passed and Jefferies went back to the island and found no human beings. In July 1853,the Otter Men made a third trip to San Nicolas. They anchored from north to eastside and they didn't find anything, so they established a camp on shore. Then Captain Nidiver and a fisherman named Charlie Brown went several miles through the beach at night. hen he stopped and examined something on the ground. Then he saw a print of a naked foot. The next day they found a basket with bone needle ,thread ,shellfish hooks and ornaments. He proposed to put it back, but Brown said, “No!" Then they saw Karana .That's how the story was told.

In July of 1835,Indians were brought from the Island of San Nicholas. They were brought to Santa Barbara. They brought the Indians to Santa Barbara because people from the north, who were hunters, killed some Indians. Around 25 Indians were brought to Santa Barbara. One of the Indians in the boat was a lady named Juana Maria. When they were about to go, Juana Maria realized that her baby was not on the boat. When they were a long way from shore, Juana Maria jumped into the sea hoping to find her baby. When she got to the island she was exhausted. She was so tired that she could not stand from the sand but thinking of her baby gave her energy to look for him. She did not find her baby. She knew she was on the island alone, and she had to find her own food. People said the she would not survive living on the island alone. The years past until a boat arrived and a person named George Nidiver, who was the captain of the crew, found her and took her home. Nobody could believe she was still alive after 18 years alone on the island. Juana Maria died at about the age of 43.

July of 1835 a ship set sail for San Nicolas Island to bring the Indians back to San Barbara .A baby was left behind and the mother went back for him, but it was not there. The ship didn't go back for 15 years. Thomas Jefferies was affered two hundred dollars to go to the island to find her, or to see if she was still alive. George Nidiver went back the first time, but he didn't have any luck either. When George Nidiver went the second time he found fresh footprints, so he knew there was someone living there. He found hand made items. When they found her she was dressed in a tunic shaped garment. She was scared, but she went back to Santa Barbara with George Nidiver.

In July 1835 a ship that sat sail from California was sailing to San Nicholas. The ship was going to rescue the few Indians that were left because people from the north which were hunters, killed Indians. They killed the Indians for otter and seal pelts. About 20 Indians were brought in the ship. One Indian named Juana Maria saw that her baby wasn't on the ship. Juana Maria jumped of the ship to see if the baby was left on the island. Her baby wasn't there. The captain promised he would come back the next they, but the ship was called for business. Other boats would take to long they thought she would not be alive by then. 15 years lapsed until someone named Thomas Jefferies went to the island but he found no trace of human life. Thomas Jefferies was motivated by otter and seal pelts. They stayed there for six weeks. They saw a figure of a human running up and down the plateau. George Nidiver heard about the strange figure they saw. He set sail to the island to search for the woman. They found no trace of her. George Nidiver never gave up. One night he found a fresh footprint. The next morning they found her. She was dressed in a tunic shaped garment made out of bird's plumage. She made food for them. Juana Maria had lived alone 18 years. She died around age 43.
