Challenge 5 - the scientific evidence does not seem to support that the chumash were first on the island. There is much research that shows that Indians first migrated from Alaska and then down the coast. And since the island was not connected to the mainland during the time period of Arlington springs woman, then the Chumash must have first been on the mainland and then used boats to get to the island.

More recent testing had put a date on the bones of 13,000 years, and determined that the bones are those of a woman. It seems that one of the oldest native americans may have lived on the islands and that they may have migrated to the mainland as Hutash told the First people to do. I think the story might have a remote connection with the bones found on the island. The story may have originated based on verbal history of the Chumash. Though it seems unlikely that Hutash made the first people into dolphins, I won't discount the story because i am not chumash and therefore that is not my reality.

Some people became frightened because of the great height and fell into the ocean. Hutash felt sorry for them and changed them into dolphins, so, of course these dolphins ARE relatives of these Chumash. The discovery on the islands, of human remains older than any known on the mainland, indicate the possibility that perhaps the islands WERE inhabited first.

Later in 1989 Dr. John Johnson determined the bones actually belonged to a woman who lived 150 feet below our current sea level off the Santa Barbara coast. Therefore, I believe the Arlington Springs Woman was probably a member of the Chumash People from the Santa Cruz Island.

Orr during more than three decades of work as Curator of Anthropology and Paleontology at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History was his 1959 find of three ancient human bones found buried 30 feet deep in the side wall of Arlington Canyon on Santa Rosa Island. Orr immediately recognized the importance of his find and convened a committee of renowned archaeologists to verify the stratigraphic context of the bones. Charcoal from the same stratum that contained the bones was dated to 10,000 years before present, making the skeletal remains the oldest found in North American until that time. Orr called his discovery "Arlington Springs Man." In the years since Orr's discovery, doubt was cast on the validity of the old dates because the bones were found in an eroded stream channel and the possibility remained that they were younger than the charcoal. With foresight toward the future when improved radiocarbon-dating techniques would become available, Orr removed a block of earth that contained the bones, wrapped it in plaster, and placed it in Museum storage. In 1989, Dr. John Johnson, Curator of Anthropology at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History - a Camp Internet Trail Guide, and Don Morris, Channel Islands National Park archaeologist, initiated a project to re-evaluate the age of the Arlington Springs remains. Johnson and Chumash research assistant Gilbert Unzueta excavated a portion of femur from the block of earth and sent samples to several specialists in bone chemistry analysis and radiocarbon dating. The result of this research demonstrated that the bones appear to be older than Orr expected, dating to approximately 13,000 years ago. Measurements taken, however, indicate that Orr had mislabeled the individual. Arlington Springs "Man" was in fact a lady! During the end of the Pleistocene, when Arlington Springs Woman lived, the sea level was at least 150 feet lower than it is today and the Northern Channel Islands were joined as one island. This woman's presence on an island at this early date is significant, because it demonstrates that the earliest Paleo-Indians had watercraft necessary to cross the Santa Barbara Channel. The newly-established age of the Arlington Springs Woman lends credence to the coastal migration theory that ancient peoples first entered North America by boat down the Pacific Coast from Alaska. Modern testing supports Orr's notion that this ancient lady represents the oldest human yet discovered in North America.

The first Chumash people were created on Santa Cruz Island. They lived there for a long period of time until it was over populated. Hutash then encourage them to leave the island and go onto the main island where no one resided at the time. Hutash created a rainbow bridge that arch between the Santa Cruz Island and the mainland. The migration to the mainland was not an easy task. There were fears of falling into the sea below due to the swirling fog and water that made them dizzy. The Chumash consider the dolphins thier relative becuase when thier people fell into the sea, Hutash felt so guilty about the mishap that she turned them into dolphins, hence making the two relatives. I am not quite sure if this could actually happen. There are some fascinating facts. I am quick to say something so supernatural has to be unreal, but who knows.

nico-csusb: . . . . Wed, Oct 3, 7:46PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Their is some scientific evidence which suggests that the Chumash first did live on the Islands. The reason for this is the level of water around the Islands during the age of Arlington Springs Woman. Since the water would have been 150 lower than it is today then the islands would have been one and it then suggested that the Chumash would have needed watercraft inorder to be capable of crossing the Santa Barbara Channel. The belief that the Chumash had watercraft lends to the thought that the earliest North Americans traveled south from Alaska on boat. While this argument makes some sense I would have to side with the belief that they may have traveled by water but stopped earlier than the Islands. After many failed, or small, societies they continued south until reaching the Islands. After a stop there, some decided to continue on south . . . and so they continued to travel south.

Susan Karlgren-CSUSB: . . . . Wed, Oct 3, 7:46PM PST (-0800 GMT)

Hutash created a brilliant rainbow to help the People migrate. The rainbow arched as a bridge between Santa Cruz Island and the mainland. While crossing to the other side the People began to look down into the swirling fog and waters below. This became dangerous for them because it made them dizzy and they were frightened. In their dizzy state the People fell downward into the sea and began to drown.

Yes there was some physical evidence that suggests that the Chumash migrated to the mainland. Phil C. Orr found the physical evidence in 1959 and it was dated back 13,000 years by the experts in carbondating. We agree with their findings.

I've read other people's answer and I think that all the answers are correct. I believe that this group of people can read and use their critical thinking skills to a very high level (like the level of teachers...who would of thought).Or...they really know how to use the cut and paste buttons. Any comments about cut and paste?????

Yes there is scientific evidence is true. In 1989 they were able to retest some bones that were discovered in 1959. The bones were discoveredto be about 13,000 years old. At the time this lady lived the North Channel Island were connected. It also proved that they had the necessayr watercraft to cross the channel.

Tracy-CSUSB: . . . . Wed, Oct 3, 7:55PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Dolphins were considered their relatives because as the People fell into the water Chumash turned them into Dolphins to save their lives. Therefore, the People/Dolphins were considered relatives.

There is evidence that some did inhabit the Island 13,000 years ago. There is evidence that there may have been water craft used to cross to the mainland. The legend suggest a rainbow , but that all lends to interpretation. Long ago it may have been boats and later embellished a little more to say a rainbow. We have all played the game where you say a statement to a person in a circle and by time it comes around the statement has changed. There is obviously no evidence to support the rainbow but enough to support the fact people did exist.

#5 If the scientific research is correct, the water level would have been lower during the Chumash's existence. Therefore, the Chumash could have inhabited the Island Santa Rosa, due to the fact that the Channel Islands were one big island. Also, the Chumash would have been able to move from island to island and from island to mainland due to their ability to build watercraft. Even with these facts in mind, I would conclude that there was a civilzation of people that existed. However, was this civilization the Chumash People?

Tracy-CSUSB: . . . . Wed, Oct 3, 8:02PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Due to the age establishment of the Arlington Springs Woman it is believed that the coastal migration theory is true. The Orr's notion supports this theory as well. I feel that this is a great story and with the new strides in DNA today you just never know.

Inez Everett CSUSB: . . . . Wed, Oct 3, 8:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
This is a fascinating story. The discovery of the Arlington Springs Women by Orr is very interesting because it is the oldest human yet discovered in North America. Other discoveries may help to piece together and lend credence to the coastal migration theory.

What is WRONG with this picture? We believe that the painting shows a winter time of year. The mountains are covered with snow. The trees are brown, orange, and yellow, yet the grass is still green. The river still flows, when it should be frozen. The article states that people lived on the east and west side of the lake, but the picture shows people only living on the west side of the lake.

Leslie/Stephanie/Hoover1: . . . . Thu, Oct 4, 11:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
