WELCOME TO THE CAMP INTERNET Channel Island Secret Treasure Hunt ..... Ahoy me Mateys, we have a story to tell that is a little known mystery about the Channel Islands …… On the remote side of a Channel Island, before the California Gold Rush, it is rumored a Spanish treasure was buried by an English Pirate, possibly the fearless young Thomas Cavendish. It is known that Cavendish captured a Spanish galleon and its treasures off the coast of Baja California, and he may have then sailed north and landed at a southern Channel Island where part of the treasure and loot was buried ……..

6. Are you willing to now try to find the ‘treasure’ ? If so, then follow this fun fictional treasure hunt and learn Channel Island geography along the way. First, view this map of the Channel Island where the missing treasure was buried. DRAW your own version of the island on a piece of paper. Once you have drawn your own version, use this online clickable Camping Map to look for a site that matches the information below ( no need to print this as you need to use it online to click on to look at pictures) button

Your Treasure Hunt Guide: . . . . Tue, Feb 26, 7:43AM PST (-0800 GMT)
7. Study the WESTERN Pacific side of the island, which is where the pirates would most likely have landed to remain unseen from the mainland shore. Look for a bay that is actually a pair of small coves separated by a small headland. It is now a popular camping place. At one of these beaches there is a prehistoric rock art painting on a weathered cliff … and it has one of the few coastal dune ecosystems still intact on the island. Just inland from one of the coves is a small palm tree grove now, but it would not have been there when the pirates landed. Look for a bay on the WEST side of the island, with palm trees, that is actually two coves divided by a headland of rock.

Your Treasure Hunt Guide: . . . . Tue, Feb 26, 7:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
8. Once you have discovered our pirates landing place, you next need to select a spot nearby that you think the pirates would have chosen to bury their treasure – qualities to look for are : Not too far from the shore as they would have had to carry its heavy contents / Far away enough from the shore that the tides would not have disturbed it / A site with soft, easy to dig soil, not rocky / A place which they would be able to recognize later with clear landmarks.

Your Treasure Hunt Guide: . . . . Tue, Feb 26, 7:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
9. Now MARK the spot with an ‘x’ , put your name, your teacher’s name and your school’s name on it in a corner, and fax your Treasure Map to Camp Internet (fax is 805-899-8698). Or you can scan it and email it, or write us and tell us where you think the treasure would have best been buried (camp@campitnernet.net). At the close of the DIG we will announce here in the Dig room which students or classrooms guessed the right location of the treasure on our treasure hunt!

#1-Chief Turai, gave Prentiss a treasure map. Prentiss, a poor man himself, went to the coast and built a makeshift boat and sailed across to Catalina, but rough waters caused him to lose much of his supplies and the map. But he remembered enough of the map to begin searching for the treasure once he landed. He searched for the treasure for 30 years but never found it. In that time, he built himself a cabin over looking the beautiful Emerald Bay, and lived a quiet life on the isolated island.
