DIG CHALLENGE #8 – The next owners of 10% of Santa Cruz Island were the Gherinis who were descendents of the Caire family. The Gherinis continued to run the sheep operations but wanted to develop the island into a resort, as had been done on Catalina. The mainland court battle over development of the island ended in the Gherinis being forced to sell their part of the island to create what type of national preserve ?

DIG CHALLENGE #9 – One other owner’s family was to play a significant role in the future of Santa Cruz Island – Edwin Stanton. He bought the 90% share of the island from the other Caires for $750,000. His goal was to protect, not develop, his part of the island and he tried to interest the National Park service in the island back in the late 1930s. They were not then interested. His son, Carey, eventually decided to sell his part of the island to the Nature Conservancy and with the funds earned from the sale, he created an agency called the Santa Cruz Island Foundation to help preserve the natural habitat and human history o the island for future generations.
