The capricious habitat that lies between high and low tide lines is called the intertidal zone. Marked by dramatic fluctuations in moisture, temperature andsunlight, life in the intertidal zone is fraught with challenges that its residents combat in a variety of ingenious ways.

Tides are caused by the gravitational attraction of the moon and the sun combined with the centrifugal force generated by the spinning of the Earth in concert with the moon. These competing tugs cause the Earth' s oceans to bulge at opposite sides, creating variations in the level of seawater.
