From as early as the 16th century the Santa Barbara Channel has been well traveled, spanning the history of European presence in the New World to modern times. Because of prevailing currents and weather conditions combined with natural hazards, there are a significant number of shipwrecks.
Lynn - 8th grade ventura: . . . . Wed, Jan 17, 9:13AM PST (-0800 GMT)

The most recent shipwreck of some size would be the "Lady Christine" lost at San Miguel Island in 1997. There is a link from the Bridge shipwreck database that shows the salvage attempt.
: . . . . Wed, Jan 17, 9:15AM PST (-0800 GMT)
One of the most recent shipwrecks in the region (though not at the channel islands) was our own research vessel Ballena, which unfortunatly wrecked a couple of months ago off Point Arguello.

"Shipwreck Bob": . . . . Wed, Jan 17, 9:23AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The archaeological remains of our human past can be studied through shipwrecks. They capture a given moment in time. We learn about the little known life aboard ship, the tools and techniques of the crewman or passenger life styles and customs. Further, we reconstruct the early methods of ship construction from a time when plans and drawings did not exist.
Courtney Smith Tulsa El. l.: . . . . Wed, Jan 17, 9:23AM PST (-0800 GMT)

Laura Francis: . . . . Wed, Jan 17, 9:23AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Alen, I have done some photography around the islands. The CINMS used to run an annual photo workshop that we hope to start again this year. One of my favorite dives was off Admiral's Reef on Anacapa Island where I had a harbor seal following me around and nipping at my fins.

Alen, I take both photographs and videotape of shipwrecks underwater. This not only allows us to study the artifacts when we return to dry land, but also allows us to monitor changes to the site. With the ocean currents moving sand we make new discoveries and must document them.

Laura Francis: . . . . Wed, Jan 17, 9:26AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Timothy, I had some amazing dives in DeepWorker in the Tortugas in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It is really amazing being down deep by yourself. I was pretty busy with learning how to operate the video camera and trying not to run into anything. I saw a huge school of yellowmouth grouper down at 300 ft. I have also been lucky enough to dive down to 1200 ft in the Delta submersible in the Santa Cruz Canyon and to 9000 feet in the Alvin submersible in the eastern tropical pacific.

Good Morning Campers - and welcome to CINMS's Laura and Robert. I have had a chance just now to try out the database and suggest our students do the following exercise to get acquainted with this great new resource - and - maybe find some of the answers to their own questions............ STUDENTS - - - TRY THIS ....... Go to the Shipwrecks databse portal at this button ... then click on the choice for CHANNEL ISLANDS NMS SHIPWRECK DATABASE ..... once you are in the database, scroll through the alphabetical ships names until you find the Winfield Scott - a shipwreck we also feature on Camp Internet. Click on the ship's name ........... Once you have the record open for that shipwreck, scroll through the resources, see the pictures below, and click to open even more information......................................... NOW - WHO CAN use the new databse to ANSWER THESE QUESTION ???? - QUESTION #1 - When did the Sipwreck happen ? #2 - what was she carrying ? #3 - where did she wreck ? #4 why did she wreck ?

"Shipwreck Bob": . . . . Wed, Jan 17, 9:33AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Here is last of the larger documented shipwrecks we our looking for WATSON A WEST The four-masted schooner loaded on 800,000 board feet of lumber at Grays Harbor, a lumber port located in the southern region of Washington state. With 1500 tons of cargo fully loaded in her holds and secured to her deck, she left port on 10 February 1923 enroute for San Pedro Harbor Captain L. M. W. Sorenson of San Francisco was master aboard the WEST for her owner Pacific Freighters Company of San Francisco. On Friday, 23 February the schooner approached the Santa Barbara northern channel around 11:30 in the evening with wind from the west at 6 knots and a heavy sea running. Captain Sorenson later reported in the official "Record Of Casualties To Vessels," when the schooner approached the channel they encountered thick fog and the evening was dark. The men on watch having "less than a boat length" of visibility were on a collision course for the breakers off San Miguel Island. As the island loomed into sight the helm was quickly brought about with an attempt to set a new course to seaward. It was too late, the jagged rock reefs of this remote island had claimed yet another vessel joining the numerous shipwrecks off Point Bennett.

Paradise Home School - We use GIS for a lot of research and education programs at the sanctuary. I am glad you are studying GIS as part of Camp internet - it is a great tool to look at data spatially. We are starting to put some of our maps of the sanctuary on the web. Hopefully we will have those up soon so you can look at things like, bathymetry, topography, whale sightings, vessel sightings, sea surface temperature and otehr information.
"Shipwreck Bob": . . . . Wed, Jan 17, 9:37AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Rebecca/Natasha, One of the 4 vessels carrying cargoes for the railroad expansion was the G W PRESCOTT.
Carrying a cargo of railroad ties destined for San Pedro, G W Prescott stranded on the west end of San Miguel at 15 August 1879 at 2 AM. The precise location is not known. G W Prescott is the earliest and smallest lumber schooner to have wrecked in the Point Bennett area. The cargo is appropriate; this was a time when the Southern Pacific was actively building toward Los Angeles and San Pedro.

Students - great answers to the Winfield Scott questions - the Winfield Scott shipwreck is one of the few wercks in the CINMS that I have been lucky enough to dive on. It is really cool to see the debris field underwater and where the different parts of the wreck have ended up. It is in about 30 ft of water or so. I had a really neat experience seeing Giant Sea Bass just offshore from the winfield scott wreck in about 80 ft of water a couple of years ago. These fish get to be several hundred pounds.

What was the first ship that sunk in the San Miguel island and what year?
"Shipwreck Bob": . . . . Wed, Jan 17, 9:45AM PST (-0800 GMT)
"The San Pedro fishing boat Adriatic, a sixty foot purse seiner owned by Dick Perica, struck a log, the seams opened up, and she sank at 9 AM Sunday five miles off Santa Barbara Island. Perica and his crew of eight abandoned the craft in a skiff, rowing for perhaps an hour before they were picked up by the purse seiner Georgia and brought to San Pedro, arriving yesterday morning. Nets and twenty tons of sardines also went down with the ship, the loss being estimated by Perica at $20,000, most of which was covered by insurance" (LAT 30 Dec 1930).
The wreck report gives the location as "five miles southwest ...Santa Barbara Island.." and attributes the sinking to a defective pump which was unable to contain a leak, saying nothing about a log. Powered by a diesel engine, Adriatic was built in Los Angeles in 1920, originally named Carl F. Lehmers, and had been powered originally by a gas engine (MVUS 1930).

Michael mejia, many ships have sailed and never been heard from again. The is very common in the Olypmic Coast sanctuary where off Cape Flattery storms have caused ships to foundered or sink with out a trace. Sometimes vessels sink due to leaky hulls..... they should have never been put out to sea. At the Channel Islands vessels have sunk without a trace as well.

Josh and Jason, I did a quick web search on who invented scuba nad found the following information:
Diving was limited to one breath until the 16th century when upside-down barrels were used as primitive diving bells, and the first multi-breath dive was made. This was a tremendous
leap forward, but certainly an efficient solution.
In 1771, John Smeaton; a British engineer, invented the air pump. This allowed hoses to be connected to the barrels.
In 1772, Sieur Freminet, a French scientist, designed a "rebreathing" device that actually recycled the exhaled air inside of the barrel. He, of course, died from lack of oxygen after about
25 minutes. But it sparked an interest in the self-contained air concept.
In 1825, William James, an English inventor, designed a self-contained apparatus. It was a cylindrical iron "belt" that held 450 psi of air, which free flowed into a copper helmet. .
Wonderful idea, but his self-contained underwater dive only lasted 7 minutes at 11 feet.
In 1864 Benoit Rouquayrol, a French Engineer, and August Denayrouze, a French naval officer, developed a surface-supplied system that included an air reservoir and a demand
regulator. Unfortunately, the reservoir wasn't high pressure, and held only enough air for one breath. Humm …
In 1876 Henry Fleuss, an English sailor, invented a closed-circuit oxygen rebreather. Fleuss’ design was used to repair an iron door in a flooded chamber of his ship. His rebreather
demonstrated the usefulness of self-contained diving. After completing his task of repairing and saving the ship, he donned his new invention and descended to the bottom and died from
the toxic effects of pure oxygen below 30 feet.
In 1926 Yves Leprieur, a French naval officer, invented a system using a 2,000-psi steel tank which free-flowed into a full-face mask.
In 1937 Georges Comheines, a Frenchman, apparently invented a demand-flow system based on a modified fire fighting apparatus. Sadly he died during the testing of the unit, and his
design was soon forgotten.
In 1939, in response to the upcoming world war, Dr. Christian Lambertsen, an American professor, developed a self-contained underwater oxygen breathing apparatus . It was the
American military that named this the clandestine (or top secret) system SCUBA. It worked quite well for shallow depths, but at deeper depths, many of the divers died from oxygen
toxicity, and the project was dropped.
In 1942, Emile Gagnan, a French engineer, and Jacques Cousteau, a French naval officer, developed a simple demand regulator. This regulator was based on research Gagnan had done
to convert automobiles from gasoline to cooking oil. Their regulator, when combined with three cylinders, each holding 2,500 psi of air, was dubbed the "Aqua-lung". (And no, he didn't
know Jethro Tull!)
In 1951 E.R. Cross, and American diver, invented the first single-hose regulator. This design was based on an oxygen system used by aviators, and was quickly copied.

How far is the Titanic below sea level? And I heard somewhere that, 14 years before the wreck, a book was written called the Titaina, About a ship called the Titaina that was the biggest and grandest ship of it's time. But, on it's maden voyage, it hit an iceberg & sank. There was not enough life boats on board, and a lot of people perished. Was this book ever written? I think I gave the other three vessel names to this question; Name the four shipwrecks that carried cargoes for America’s railway expansion. Including the "G. W. Prescott", there was the "Louis", "Samoa", and "Emily Farnum"
During a remote sensing survey off Destruction Island in the Olympic Coast sanctuary last September, we believe we discovered the "Emily Farnum" location. This summer we will make dives to locate the site.
