Each of you will be learning many new skill-sets this week. New tools like the GIS Internet Map Server and the GPS unit. New skills like posting images and text to create online Field Reports and Internet Digs. Perhaps most importantly you will be learning how to navigate the Camp Internet web. You will also be learning this week to use the Camp Chatroom as an important part of your classroom's Camp Internet experience. The chatroom provides an environment for students to learn and practice important technology and communication skills. One of the most important of the skills practiced in the chatroom is dialog. Dialog is essential to Camp Internet Expeditions. Learning to meet with "trail guides" (subject specialists who come from Universities, State and Federal agencies), ask those Trail Guides valuable questions during online chat sessions and then reply to the answers online and prepare a brief report for class is an important skill. It helps teach your students a way to use Internet Chatrooms as learning environments. One suggestion ** have students prepare 3 to 5 questions ahead of time by reviewing the Trail Guide and their agency before the day of the Chat. In your weekly Briefing you will always receive a link to the Trail Guide's web page and the web site for the Agency they represent. Be sure to visit button to get an idea of some past Trail Guides for Camp

Give some time this week to the Teacher's Web site. It gives each Camp Internet teacher an important "intranet" where schedules, software, workbooks and passport keys are always available. Goto button to review the Teacher's Web. It contains important resources for your GPS / GIS work this week including an excel template for recording GPS and other information for classroom GIS projects. The Excel form is at button
That template is designed to copy to your computer for classroom use. Also note in the Teacher's Web the Schedule for this weeks activities.

Hello Campers - This is Marcy, the Camp’s Education Development Director – thanks for joining us in this challenging 3-day training program – we know you will be learning a lot, and these live online postings are a chance to DO Camp, not just learn ‘about’ Camp, so have fun !
ASK ANY QUESTIONS you have about how Camp Internet will help you Turn Technology into Learning in your classroom ......
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 10:26AM PST (-0800 GMT)
This chat room exercise is a good first step in getting familiar with the LIVE and HUMAN interactive features that are unique to the Camp program. We use a simple online Q&A format to bring scientists and historians from universities and museums across the contract in contact with our students. This IS the classroom with out walls so let's try out how it works today............ After you read the information we will share below, POST A GREETING - lets us know who you are, what grade level and type of classroom you work with, and ask a question – we are here live with you.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 10:28AM PST (-0800 GMT)
FIELD TRIP BRIEFING ……. This week you will be given a special opportunity to 1. learn how technology can enhance your curriculum in the classroom, and also 2. how technology can bring the real world into your classroom and your classroom out into the real world...... On Wednesday you will be taking a great step-back-in-time FIELD TRIP to the historic
Adamson House, the Malibu Lagoon Museum, and will make a field exploration at the actual Malibu Lagoon to learn about the prehistoric Chumash life on this important archaeological site, and about the plants and animals that lived there then and that live there today. You will then come back to the lab and serve as our online expert TRAIL GUIDES by posting your own field reports !
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 10:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
We have selected these historic sites as your field trip destination for several reasons. The Adamson House is an important architectural and cultural landmark from the 20th century.
........ As a reminder of the California coastal region life style when ranching was still the predominant activity, the house and its family history recalls the Alta California lifeway that began with the Spanish arrival, continued into the Mexican Ranchos and, in this then-remote place, was able to continue on into the early 20th century.......
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 10:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
One of the most remarkable historical features at the house – inside and out – are the beautiful hand-painted tile works. Inside there is even one that imitates a Persian rug !
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 10:29AM PST (-0800 GMT)
The tile work was an important craft in California’s effort to develop a regional style in the early 1900s, and on Catalina Island we also study that famous tile and pottery industry started by the Wrigley family. In Malibu, the tile and pottery factory ( founded by the Adamson House owners) developed the most sophisticated glazes and designs, creating entire murals - one of the most famous of which is the beautiful Peacock Fountain located on the terrace at the Adamson House
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 10:30AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Down at the Lagoon, where you will spend the afternoon, you will be taking a step even further back in time to the period of Chumash habitation at the site.
Your tour guides will show you the plants, animals and terrain the Chumash used during their many generations living on this beautiful estuary and lagoon. Come back and tell us – WHAT did they eat? WHERE did they live ? HOW many houses were in the village ? WHAT was their trade relationship with other villages ? In the mountains or out on the islands ?

New this year is the Global-Garden Expedition. Goto button to explore the garden classroom. I encourage every classroom interested in gardening (outdoors or indoors) to make use of the garden web site this year. The Global-Garden project involves a lot of history and literature as well as science. Students are guided through a study of ancient agriculture as they learn what gardening is all about. When did we first learn to store seeds, how did we learn to rotate crops and how did the plow evolve? Sustainable Agriculture and how that relates to sustainable communities is a big part of the Global-Garden history unit. The science unit has a GIS component with the Camp Internet garden being the first of many school gardens which will go online this year as part of the Camp Internet school garden GIS project. The Camp garden GIS is located at
button - you will spend time this week learning to use that garden GIS map. The longitude and latitude information as well as the excel data sheet was created by 4th,5th and 6th graders. It provides an excellent example what GIS teaches in the classroom. In this case each of the students learned to design a basic database (or excel spreadsheet), identify what 'fields' of information about the garden they wanted to record and then organize the information for Camp Internet's GIS map maker to work with to create the web based GIS map. They also learned to map the garden, calculate the perimeter and more.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:09AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Campers - we are also arranging an optional DINNER at Duke's Malibu to tie in our SURF HISTORY section for a nice, relaxing Wednesday evening dinner. Camp's 5 staff will be there to join you (each teacher pays their own way, Camp will pay the gratuity). Check out their web site at this button - Duke was a world reknowned surfer from Hawaii, gold medal Olympic winner and spent time living on the Channel coast and surfing the waves. He also became a local legend by saving lives during a terrible storm, hauling shipwreck victims to shore on his board ... Duke's is close by your field trip site - a great place to wait out traffic and have a nice time getting to know one another right on an oceanfront beach.

Annie - you ask an important question - "are the students asking really thought-profoking questions?" - the answer is Yes. We have seen students make a real effort to ask good, productive questions in the chats and we've seen some great work by students in the creation of Student Digs. Goto the chat archives at button you will see some good examples -

In the past, how have families responded to this program? What has been the greatest tool for getting families involved? I am mostly concerned with those families that have not been exposed to computer technology and may have some anxieties about the internet.
Barbara: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:27AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Miguel--The excitement of the students the whole year; they did not know whether the trip would happen, and neither did I, but it was wonderful the way they responded to the idea of "islands" in general and stories about the islands, the true story behind the Island of the Blue Dolphins etc

Answers to many questions - Camp Internet has been working with classrooms since 1992 when we brought hte first 3rd graders in the world onto the Internet for a fascinating inter-cultural excahnge right at the time the USSR was disolving. the Russian kids were very worried about what "Americans" were really like. You can imagine they had heard as many stoires about us as we had about them ... but the Internet allowed the kids to find out they shared many things in common .. and was humbling for the California students when they learned how hard life is there for a Russian family - the cost of rent, the cost of bread - it was a real eye opener.

Might be a TRAIL GUIDE CHAT like this one ? Or ? while we do schedule themes each week - and special guests / events - REMEMBER - you are free to use any of our mateirals any time ! And the DIGS go into the archive off the main page that lets you use those hot links for in class Q&A anytime. Also, if you can not make it to the LIVE trailg guide chat - send class questions (3-6) in advnace and we iwll post them on your behalf. Then students can come back later and see the answers.

Ah yes, standards: when I set up my project at Teach the Teachers, I referenced about a zillion standards; so you can go look at the project and view a powerpoint presentation about the trip. Go to teachtheteachers.org and look at class projects; search for Channel islands. It is to create a field guide to the Channel Islands, which is a giant research project. The kids loved it and they really did some wonderful work last year when we did not have the internet and it was all book research . . . You may want to download my powerpoint project on your own computer and the documentation which is in microsoft word.

The process of actually creating a garden and building a database or excel sheet recording what the garden is made from and what grows in order to make a GIS map is another component.

ISLAND VISITS - boats are allowed to bring guests to San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa and Catalina. San Nicolas and San Clemente are used by the military and have restricted access. We have helped coordiante trips out to ANACAPA, CATALINA and SANTA CRUZ. As far as fund raising, boat trip is about $30 per student, and Ancapa includes the naturalist and guides. Catalina trip can add a museum tour in the old avalon Ballroom building, and a naturalist at Descanso beach for a few dollars more per student. Camp deos not operate these field trips ourselves - but - we do facilitate.

Marcy,
What is the trick to putting a picture into a chat?
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:41AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Ranger 1 and TEACHERS - do NOT use the REFRESH button in your upper browser bar - ONLY click on CHAT button to send, or to refresh if you don't want ot post but want ot see most recent postings. that should solve it.
Tom Garcia@Hughes: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:42AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Will students be able to interact in realtime to conduct their GIS?
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:43AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Jean and Laurey - we will do the picture add lesson on Thursday after they get familiar. Once they go do today's DIG they will see what it looks like from the user side, and then we will instruct them on the creator side Thursday.
Timothy - Camp: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Chris / Superior St. - yes - electronic field trips take place during the year - using graphics in a chatroom format and with a lot of video. We take as much video of our Trail Guides as possible and also record a lot of our Field Trips so you will find materials to work with most camp units in the video library. Goto to both the video web sites. The main one for Camp use is at button
there is another, more comprehensive video library which we have developed located at button - that library contains comunity, health, school and environmental videos
MrGodinez@ParkAve: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:44AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Can students paste pictures to the chatroom?
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:45AM PST (-0800 GMT)
ELECTRONIC FIELD TRIPS - yes ,we have them in video and photo/virtual formats for students to see these locations by remote. ALSO - students themselves come back from thier field trips and post reports to shre what they learned in their activity with other students. Might be to a local garden or park - or might be an overnight trip. Either way, all students have a chance to learn from each other's field trips.

Students are not allowed to post pictures in the chat room, but will be shown how to post a picture per posting when they do guided FIELD REPORTS. In your lesson on Thursday, you will learn how to find and size pictures in an aceptable format - can't have them be TOO BIG or it clogs up everyone's bandwidth. In all cases, any image MUST be approved by the teacher in advance. RESPONSIBLE USE of the Internet is required and encouraged at all times.
Willie Bradford/Liggett: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:47AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello, Willie, here. I am at Liggett Elem./5th grade. I am ready to get started in class as soon as we are connected to internet.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:48AM PST (-0800 GMT)
TEACHERS - you also need to check out the INTERNET DIG off the main Camp portal before lunch. That is a reearch and posting exercise POPULAR with the kids. you will see how it is different than the TRAIL GUIDE CHATS in format and intent ....
Timothy - Camp: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:48AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Tom Garcia / Hughes - we will work on some realtime editing of the Internet Map Server in the spring. On the gis cd-rom you will receive this week is a special GIS viewer and software that will allow stuents to work on building maps real time in the classroom. I encourage Camp teachers to take their students through the first part of the program, which establishes a basic understanding of mapping, the use of an Internet Map Server (which is a web browser for gis maps/databases) and to begin a class project to publish on the Internet Map Server. The GIS projects you will go over this week are either a school garden gis, a school or community resource gis or a special gis such as the Oak Tree gis map students in Santa Barbara have begun. Hope that answers your question.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:50AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Willie - while you wait for your connection, Cmap will provide you with CD ROMs to help the kids participate. The content is avilabl - and the videos. If you can get even one computer online - even by a phone line - they can also participate in the DIGS and CHATS.
Etta at Liggett: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:50AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Getting into the chat is easy. Having something interesting to say is the challenge.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:53AM PST (-0800 GMT)
TEACHERS - I just checked the DIG - only a few posting so far and not many ON-SUBJECT ..... you need to focus the rest of your time before lunch on answering at least THREE DIG quesitons to help you get familiar with that format. It is the MOST popular with the students so jump in !! You will find it on the first link off the Camp portal, or click on this button - see you there !
Timothy - Camp: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:53AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Annie - we have some great videos about the Channel Islands for classroom use. Goto: button
The videos on the Pirate Bouchard are exceptional. We had one of our trail guides make the videos with us so we would have a record of his studies.
The video called "A Treasure in the Sea" is an excellent class introduction. The Anacapa Island videos are a great record of a Camp Internet teacher Field Trip.
Diana at Napa St.: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:53AM PST (-0800 GMT)
What areas of study can we look forward to in the future?
Zenaida from Wilmington: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:54AM PST (-0800 GMT)
I'm a beginning intermediate computer technology user, but I think that Camp Internet could prove very exciting, effective, and productive for the teaching-learning situation. But please give a list of steps to follow to make "Your picture URL" serve its purpose.
Timothy - Camp: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:56AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Etta at Liggett - your comment is very important. (getting into the chat is easy, having someing interesting to say is...). That is why we really encourage review with your students prior to a chat. Say you were chatting with the trail guide who recites the Pirate stories. If your students saw him online via the video before the chat they would most likely come up with some good questions. With every chatsession we will point you either to Camp video's or to the web sites where that Trail Guides information is at. A half hour with the students a day or two before the chat and then asking the class to agree on 5 main questions can really help focus.
Timothy - Camp: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Zenaida from Wilmington - the 'picture url' allows you to post a picture which has a web address - litteraly button with no quotation marks.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 11:58AM PST (-0800 GMT)
NORMA - re: Family response - one of the most rewarding facets of Camp Internet has been the parent involvement component. Family nights in the classroom bring parents into a the classroom - and many have never been in a room with a computer before. You will be touched to see their pride as they watch their students use the Camp program - show them their work - show them how to do a DIG - brave parents jump right in and participate, others watch in awe of their child's mastery of this new tool ........ In the SMITHSONIAN INNOVATION AWARD proposal, the writer documented the impact the program was having on the parents - many of whom are still struggling with their own English ( and Spanish ) literacy skills and who were amazed to see how adept the young students are. CAMP builds FAMILY PRIDE !
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 12:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
TEACHERS - be sure to visit the INTERNET DIG and post answers to three questions before this week's session is over. You will use ONLINE RESEARCHING skills, information DIGESTING, and writing of a concise ANSWER / SYNPOSIS with each posting. STUDENTS LOVE THIS so let's make sure our tachers understand the DIGs - they are different than the CHATS.
Carl, Camp Trainer: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 12:04AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Tim and Marcy,
We have had an interesting chat (and also had experience with the Dig). Thank you. We are going to lunch now and we'll come back later to view the final posts of the chat!

Marcy,
Thanks a bunch for the quick responses to the Island tours and the question about the refresh button!
Timothy - Camp: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 12:13AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Everyone - you did a great job. Important areas we began to discuss were the Teacher's Web - where you have daily access to an interactive calendar, Briefing archives, GIS and video software along with teacher guides and, of course, to the Passports and Passport Keys for each unit. The Teacher's Web is at button -- We also reviewed the video library located at button - there is good materials there for Channelhistory, BackCountry, Southwest and Global-Garden studies. And we add new videos of Trail-Guides and Field Trips all the time.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 1:04PM PST (-0800 GMT)
AREAS OF STUDY - right now Camp is running 5 tracks - indivdiual tracks are Channel Islands, Backcountry, Southwest and Garden - the shared track is the GIS/GPS, and garden will also be shared for those interested. We were asked about future areas of study - more literature, science and historical information in all existing tracks is on the immediate horizon. Long term? We plan to do an American History track that covers the work of our visionary leaders, first colonists forwards and native - both political and social .. and there has been a long standing interest in doing a Mars unit incl remote robotics. Also, the ocean unit will be expanding to cover other regions beyond the immediate channel - Monterey Bay is next to be added.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 1:09PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Rosie asked WHERE DO WE GO FOR HELP? - good question. If you can email us, send all requests for any kind of help to camp@campinternet.net. We then answer or forward the request to the right person. Someone is in that account virtually 7 days a week to catch questions. If you need help by phone, our headquarters number is 1-800-889-2823. In addition, there are many palces on the web where you will see "Send us a Question". Fax is 805-889-8698. And important - you will be meeting us or learning with our resources in the TEACHERS CHAT ROOM that is a private discussion and learning center where you can interact live teacher to teacher.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Tue, Aug 21, 1:14PM PST (-0800 GMT)
FIELD TRIP QUESTIONS - teachers who register for the CSU Stipend of $1,000 can apply that funding to the year end field trip costs. Others also find funding in their outdoor ed program, PTA, school or district discretionary funds, and still others raise the money by contacting local companies, doing email response drives, or by having parents carpool to save money. It all depends on your school's procedures what will work best. We can also facilitate a low cost day trip that is an oceanography cruise our of Oxanrd harbor for an affordable $10 a student. We will suggest which vendor is the best match to your interest in a budget, and help you plan the trip. we also can coordiante several no-cost trips ( bus fare only) in the region - Indian Canyons or Joshua Tree National Park for example. Other locations - like Aquarium of the Pacific or Huntington Gardens host unusal overnights - some that are for families. Lots of options !
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Aug 23, 11:02AM PST (-0800 GMT)
MORE NEWS on FIELD TRIPS - the LAUSD Outdoor Ed Program may be able to offer your class a low cost or free field trip option. The link to their Clear Creek program button describes a variety of programs : schools pre-selected can do a 5 day session in Angeles Forest; other schools can request a one day, full day, learning adventure........ They also offer marine education on a rotational basis in July and August at the Point Fermin facility in San Pedro.......... They invite you to call and find out what your school is able to apply for, and noted each request from a school needs to be on letterhead with principal approval. Costs are for meals, and those on free lunch have no fees. We suggest every backcountry class conside the one day session at Clear Creek, and will let you know if we have any approved Channel Islands schools able to do Point Fermin.

Timothy - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Aug 23, 1:53PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Dot - with the 4th graders I've been working with on the Garden GIS what we've done is have them take part in reading the latitute/longitude on the yellow GPS unint when we go to different parts of the garden and then they help the older kids decide what to put onto the list of information about the garden (how many zucinni are there, how many blossoms did you count this morning, etc). If you present the information slowly and with a focus on a simple project like a garden map or a school playyard map it can build some great math, reading and project skills. I'll keep everyone updated as the kids continue with the Garden gis up here.

Timothy - Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Aug 23, 1:56PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Deb Symons - to use the GPS units with a large group, like 30 students, create teams. Make 5 teams of 6 kids each. One team member handles the GPS, one takes notes on coordinates, one team member tages or marks the area measured, one team member types the information into the computer form). Various ways to split the teams up. Then having everyone take turns being the GPS unit manager works really well. And you end up with a tremendous group/team project experience for the students.

************************************************************button -- the Camp Internet Video and Audio library - remember that with young students, when reading is an issue, the audio components with the Camp library can be used to great value -
************************************************************button - this is the special GIS clearinghouse for teachers - a quick place to access GIS maps, study units, software and support materials
************************************************************And , of course, the very important Camp Internet Search engine at button -
When I wanted to check on the question today about Shipwreck database I went to the search engine and searched on shipwrecks and found the Camp Shipwreck web site. That one tool - located on the lefthand side of all Camp study units, can open a lot of resources within the very large library of materials which Camp Internet is home to.

Oscar informed us of the special way of life of the Chumash. Their invention and use of the plank canoe, their complex village and religious life, and their extraordinary craftsmanship are what make the Chumash so unique.
The Chumash knew many uses for the natural materials in their environment. Materials for fishing included various hooks made from bone or carved from abalone shell, gorges made from sharpened bone or wood, fishing spears with detachable fore shafts, and nets made from plant fiber cordage.
Like most California Indians, the Chumash were hunters and gatherers, dependent for their food on the natural plants and animals native to the region. They had a technology – the tools and techniques – for collecting, processing and storing these foods effectively.
Their homes, beds and baskets were made from locally gathered plants. Their grinding tools, knives, arrowheads and cooking pots ere made of stone. They used animal hides and bones for clothing, tools and musical instruments. No resource was wasted for these creative and clever people.
