(CIRGIS) Meeting

March 13, 2001

CIRGIS general meeting

Meeting called to order by Lynn Kada.
Lynn noted that Ben was absent due to illness.

Each person attending the meeting gave a general introduction.

A representative of the Conception Coast Project was present and it was announced they have joined CIRGIS and signed the MOU.

Lynn noted that CIRGIS has signed an MOA with the Central Coast Joint Data Committee. Ben represented CIRGIS for the signing.

Paul Van Zuyle discussed Ventura College GIS classes comming up soon.

Steve Palladino noted the College will also be holding GPS courses this fall.

Interest by the group was expressed for holding classes during the week. They are currently scheduled for Saturdays.

Ventura College will be hosting a two day ESRI training session.

Mary Cook updated the group on current Airphoto USA projects. After the meeting the group adjourned to the college lab to view new high resolution digital images.

It was announced that Kern County has a GIS position open.

Paul Van Zuyle gave an update on Ventura County Board of Supervisors support of GIS. The County is currently preparing to hire a GIS coordinator.

Paul also noted that Ventura County has not established a Data Policy. The Board of Supervisors will decide the Policy.
It was recommended that letters to Ventura County Supervisors will help as they prepare to set a Data Polity.

Paul has been hired by Ventura County as interm GIS Coordinator while they prepare to hire.

Lynn noted that Anacapagis.org is still operating. Still meets every two weeks.

Lynn pointed out that Anacapagis.org had given many people the opportunity to work directly with IMS or other GIS resources.

Lynn gave update on CALGIS. Paul noted that the State is opening up grants for GIS data development.

The Governor is proposing a State GIS Council. The issue of balance between local agencies and state projects was discussed.

One question about the proposed State GIS Council was discussed. Should Education lead agencies be part of this Council?

It was recommended by the group that Ben invite a State representative to speak to CIRGIS on upcomming funding and projects.

Some discussion on the issue of developing true database management integrated into GIS was held.

Representative from California State Fish & Game spoke. Descriped new tool being tested. Working with binoculars and laser finders linked to a computer to create shape files as you pin point locations while looking through the binoculars. Value for work with location of toxic spills, landslides, etc.

Timothy Tyndall gave an update on the NSGS grant. It was signed by Timothy and sent over to Ben in the morning for final preparation and mailing.

Meeting was adjourned and the group went to the lab to view the Airphoto USA images.
Next meeting will be May 8 - Ventura College.
