Internet Access for Cuyama Valley
UPDATE 4/12/1999
The RAIN Rural Community Network continues to work on
acquiring local dial access to the Internet for the Cuyama
Valley, and although this has been a much more cumbersome
process than predicted, we have finally been successful
in receiving approval for subsidized access from the federal
government. We now will go through the process of getting
all of the remaining subsidy paperwork filed and approved.
In the interim, we are offering residents of the Valley
a means to access RAIN's award-winning online education
and health programs, and lower their Internet and long
distance phone costs in one package of services :
1. Subscribe to RAIN at our regularly reduced rates of
$18 month individual, $25 a month for a family with up
to four user accounts, or $25-$35 month for a business
with domain.com email and/or web site service.
2. Then subscribe to RAIN's long distance partner, EarthTel,
and lower your long distance costs to under six cents
a minute for calls anywhere in California ( interstate,
continental U.S. $.089 - same rates apply for 800# service
too ).
3. As a result, you can now have low cost Internet access
and phone service - Internet as low as $16.50 a month
if you pay one year in advance ($198) - and your phone
calls to RAIN - to 805-690-RAIN - will cost a low $.055
a minute.
A local Cuyama Valley resident, Juan Gonzalez, will be
coordinating outreach and training activities for RAIN's
Rural Community Project, and if you have questions on
how to join RAIN you can reach our headquarters at 1-800-889-2823,
or talk to Juan by email at dltjg@rain.org. We are working
on building a locally-designed web site for the Valley,
and welcome your input about resources you would like
to see online that benefit the health, education, and
economic opportunities for your community. And thanks
to continued USDA Rural Utility Service funding, be assured
we are performing Y2K system-wide upgrades. Local training
programs are also being coordinated at the health clinic
and community sites this year.
Internet sign-up : 1-800-889-2823 Tues-Fri 10-5, Sat 12-6
