- Issues Discussed -

1) Most prominent health problems in Guadalupe include asthma, allergies, diabetes, hypertension and field-related injuries. Guadalupe Healthy Start is currently conducting a needs assessment for the city which will provide a clearer picture of community health needs.

2) Information on common illnesses, nutrition and children's dentistry needed for the community - focus must be on teaching parents how to take care of their kids. Currently, the Guadalupe pharmacy is the main health information site.

3) Information on immunization requirements for schools needed - currently only 72% of Guadalupe children are immunized or have waiver slips.

4) Local Obstetrician care information needed for Guadalupe - there is currently no provider of OB care in Guadalupe.

5) Schools in Guadalupe include Mary Buren and Kermit McKenzie Junior High, all high school students get bussed to Santa Maria.

6) Adult education programs needed - last assessment showed 60% of Guadalupe adults don't have a high school diploma. Currently, Mary Buren School offers ESL classes for adults, and the GETA lab hosts career development classes through Alan Hancock college.

7) Career-oriented computer training needed - GETA wants to start an entrepreneurship and A+ computer certification program

8) Daycare for the community needed - the local Boys and Girls Club gets used a lot, and there is a reading-challenged afterschool program at Mary Buren School, but no other day care.

9) GETA Career Center is the main computer access point for the city of Guadalupe - aside from local schools, the Boys and Girls Club has computers but no internet access, and the Guadalupe Library has two computers with internet access but has very limited hours.

10) DSL internet access is unavailable in many areas of the community - much of the community as well as the city government center cannot get DSL. Guadalupe Schools are also looking for a way to get fiber-optic connectivity for their school sites.

11) Guadalupe Chamber of Commerce is opening a new visitors center, which will make a good outreach point for community events.

Meeting adjourned.
