- Meeting Agenda -
1. Status of local projects and initiatives
· An online community calendar for Oak View has been in place and
part of the Oak View website since last July. Jane Middleton is currently
the secretary for this calendar system, and is the person to contact if
you want to add information about an event or meeting.
· Free computer training is now available for the community on
certain evenings - community residents interested in training should
contact Jane Middleton at (805) 649-4418. A regularly scheduled
training day/time is not available yet, but as soon as it can be
identified it will be posted on the Oak View website and on fliers to be
posted in the community.
· The Oak View Community Clinic will shortly be receiving a video
telephone, which will allow the clinic to communicate with other clinics
and doctors involved in RAIN's health and wellness activities. This video
telephone can also be used by the clinic to have local residents consult
remotely with doctors from other areas that may specialize more in
treating their ailment.
· SOS Project - The Ventura School Board has made the decision to
place the property on the surplus list, and now organizations which have
an interest in the property are being looked at. The county of Ventura
may be thinking of buying it for their library system and working with
other county organizations to build a community resource. The school
board must notify the agencies now, and then it will go out to others if
there is no interest. We are not really sure what comes next, but Leigh
Melander is staying in contact with both the County and interface. She
will soon be meeting with RAIN Directors to discuss the next steps. The
next SOS Committee meeting is on Wednesday November 8th at 7pm, at the Oak
View Community Center.
2. Jane Middleton will be taking over as Oak View's community and council
coordinator. As part of this new position, Jane is responsible for
scheduling future meetings and contacting council members about community
projects. She will also be representing Oak View's interests in project
activities, and making recommendations for the allocation of project
resources. A local computer-using youth (Nisheet Jain) will also begin
assisting Jane with community coordination and Youth Technology Corp
activities.
3. Review current council activities:
· Outreach for an Oak View Technology Master Family - The chosen
family will be setup with a good computer, free access to the internet,
and computer training in exchange for assisting with technology training
on a neighborhood level. Who would be possible candidates for this
position? Jane Middleton suggested previous meeting attendee Christy
Crequt would be an ideal candidate since she could incorporate her animal
rescue skills and facilities into an after school program for Oak
View. The council will ask around the community to see who else would be
interested in applying for the program.
· RAIN's Santa Barbara Youth Technology Corp has been working on
refurbishing computers from Santa Barbara County Surplus. These computers
will be distributed in DLT project communities, including Oak View. RAIN
needs the council to prepare an initial list of 4 locations where these
computers could go, and what good uses they could be put to. Who is
willing to outreach locally and put this list together? Jane will work
with the council and local residents to put together an initial list of
locations.
· Formation of the Oak View Youth Technology Corp to assist with
gathering local information and adding content to the Oak View website,
gathering data for a community GIS map, refurbishing computers for local
families, etc. A local community resident, Nisheet Jain will be starting
youth activities in Oak View, and will be working with local youth
organizations including the Ojai Valley Youth Foundation to pull youth
into the program.
· RAIN has one computer ready to be setup as a workstation for
members of the Oak View Civic Council, but have been unable to get an
agreement as to where to put this computer and who will be responsible for
it. Is there a member of the Oak View Civic Council at this meeting that
can give us more information about when this computer can be setup? Civic
Council member Leanna Kennedy explained that the Oak View Civic Council is
waiting for the Police Activities League to vacate the community center
before accepting the computer, and this should happen by January 1st of
2001.
4. New issues relating to health, education, and technology in the Oak
View community.
· The Oak View Library Friends Foundation is re-grouping and will
start meeting regularly at the Oak View Library.
· Plans are being put in place to install bus shelters in Oak
View. These shelters would make good places to post information about
RAIN's activities in Oak View, including community network sign-up
specials, fliers about council and youth meetings, and special community
wellness and education events.
5. Jane Middleton will be scheduling a meeting for early December to get
some things coordinated before the holiday season.
