Telemedicine ImplementationIf you are reading this, you are thinking about becoming part of the USDA/RAIN Telemedicine Project to use telecommunications and internet technology to provide access to health and wellness information across distance. You may be a patient, a physician, a health care administrator, a nurse, an information systems manager, a pharmaceutical or durable medical equipment representative, a representative from an online medical education business, or a business to business vendor for supplies.
As part of this project, we have developed a Doctor's Intranet to work with our health care providers to improve communication, work flow, and patient care. Among other things, this telemedicine intranet includes a calendar of local and webcasted events relating to healthcare and education for the professional, forumns for discussing issues pertinent to telehealth and rural telehealth, and a library of reliable patient education and physician education information and media. A chatroom has also been put in place for discussing problems with specialists, and there are also many links to other sites of interest to health care providers.
We do not believe in fostering CYBERCHONDRIA--the excessive and unwarranted fear of diseases listed on the web. We do think of telehealth as a diverse group of health related services including professional education, community health education, and administration of health services. It is the focus of our project to bring these services together and enhance them using cutting-edge technologies such as streaming media for the web, CD creation and distribution, and Geographic Information Systems.
We are looking for your help in screening useful web sites, as well as bringing to us any ideas and resources you may have to the table that could further our efforts. As a start, we highly recommend MedLinePlus for you and your patients. We expect you to have email and will ask permission to communicate with you but will not foster patient to doctor email communication until remuneration for time spent has been established. Read the documents below to find out more about telemedicine and what it can do for you. If you have any questions not answered within this site, send us email!
