Camp Internet Tours The Endeavour replica ship
Friday, 5/6/99
On May 7th 1999, Camp Internet toured the replica of the
Endeavour ship. The original Endeavour was built in 1765, and set sail in
1768 under the command of Lieutenant James Cook of the Royal Navy. The
ship's voyage played a role of major importance in the fields of Pacific
discovery, navigation, and natural science, including the discovery of
over 2,600 new species of plants by the ship's scientists.
Every effort was made to see that this replica ship of the Endeavour
looked as close as possible to the historic 18th century Endeavour ship.
The main difference between the original and the replica are the metal
fittings, the use of older hardwood, and the use of man-made materials for
masts, running rigging and sails. Even with these modern additions, the
replica was built successfully so as to look and feel just like an 18th
century collier ship, a bulk carrier ship that is sturdy and safe, even in
rough weather.
