Peppers
Peppers need even temperatures and warm nights for good growth. They are
warm-weather vegetables that require about 2 ½ months to develop, and will
thrive in any well-drained soil.
-Planting: Pepper seeds should be started indoors 4-6 weeks before the
last expected frost. Transplants can also be bought and planted after the
soil has warmed thoroughly. Plants should be spaced 18-25 inches apart, in
rows 20-35 inches apart. Cutworm collars made of hard paper should be
installed at this time. Seedlings should be protected from direct sunlight
and watered well with warm water after planting.
-Growing: Pepper plants need to be kept well watered through the summer,
and free of any weeds. A straw mulch will help deter weeds and keep soil
moist.
-Harvesting: Peppers may be picked during any stage of growth, and used
fresh or dried.
