Pumpkins
While most varieties of pumpkins require more space than the average
gardener can afford, they can tolerate more shade than most other squash,
which makes them a good choice for unused spots in garden areas.
-Planting: Seeds should be planted five seeds per hill, with hills spaced
6 feet apart after all danger of frost has passed. Manure or compost can
be added to the hills to encourage growth.
-Growing: A thick layer of mulch should be spread before the pumpkins
begin to vine to deter weeds, since it is nearly impossible to hoe weeds
after the vines have spread. The plants should be kept well watered, with
a side-dressing of manure added every 2-3 weeks.
-Harvesting: Fully mature pumpkins should be cut from the vine before the
first frost.
