Frequent Questions About Homeschooling

There are many questions about home schooling presented by parents, family, friends, and even strangers.

Is Home Schooling Legal? -

YES!

Please see Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) for more legal information. That web site provides for individual state laws and a list of support groups for your state.

Will HomeSchooling shelter my child so they can't function in the "real world?"

Studies show that home schoolers are more well rounded socially than their public school counterparts. Perhaps this is because home schooled students are given the freedom to develop their ideas, personality, and relationships in a secure, safe environment. This gives them the confidence needed to succeed in the "real world."

What About Socializiation?

Socialization begins at home, learning to grow and work together as a family. That is one value central to Homeschooling.

Some homeschool families do not totally feel they can work with the traditional approach to childhood socialization. A new model is being created by Homeschoolers. Demonstrating the ability of Homeschooled students to work easily within the larger society, often working with groups and taking leadership quickly.

A child's social exposure in public schools often becomes limited, with seperation by age groups happening from kindergarden on. In Homeschool children of many different ages generally study together, (just like the old one room schoolhouse).

The issue of peer pressure relating to important things like their values, dress, language, behavior, and sense of personal worth is very important to most Homeschool parents. The idea that their children will be randomly exposed to other children they may have no relationship with outside of school is a concern. To much is left to chance in the Public School model as far as the "who" and "what" we teach and expose our children to.

How do homeschooled students rate academically?

Homeschooled students consistently score higher on achievement tests than both public and private schooled students.

While this does not guarentee each child will test above average, it does show that home schooling works....and it works well.

For more information on home schooling statistics and research please see National Home Education Research Institute.

What about a high school diploma? -

We have a special area in your Homeschool web where you can download and printout forms. Including diplomas, High School transcripts, monthly course schedules, reading lists and much more. Goto: Forms and Printouts

Parents are the ones who issue a home school diploma.

It is very important for parents to keep a good transcript.

What about college? -

It is especially important for home schooled students to meet with college officials early in their high school years to determine the school's requirements concerning home schooled admissions, particularly if the student has their heart set on only one or two insitutions.

What About Sports? -

That is an important question. Every Homeschool family has to work out a schedule for P.E. (physical education). For families in our rural communities P.E. often involves taking care of animals. Horses, cows, sheep and the fences, feed and care associated with those kind of animals.

There are also individual sports students may take private lessons for or enjoy individually such as track, tennis, gymnastics, dance, swimming and many others.
