Why do families choose to home school?
Many of the families I have worked with began their Homeschool for
very unique, personal reasons. One of the special things about Homeschooling is
that link to a traditional American Value which places the personal, spiritual
values of the family first.
Here are some of the reasons I most often hear about from Homeschoolers, parents
and kids alike.
Academics
Some families are not content with the status quo of public school institutions
where advanced students can become bored and those having trouble keeping
up may be labeled. Home school families can put together an academic plan
that addresses the specific needs of their child. Perhaps this accounts for
the higher achievement test scores among hsers.
Social
Some families do not accept the traditional approach to socialization. T
hey believe the horizontal approach public and even private education adopts is
harmful. A child's social exposure becomes limited to children their own age.
They become peer-dependent for their values, dress, language, behavior, and
sense of personal worth. This can have a negative affect on a child's self concept. Home schooled children have a much broader form of socialization. Their vertical experience gives them skills they need in real life ranging from babies to adults.
Relationship
Some parents choose to homeschool in order to mentor their children throughout
their childhood.
They want to be the ones to guide and teach their children.
This is not possible when their children are gone 6-9 hours out of each day and
must spend even more time in the evening concentrating on homework.
Home schooling gives the freedom to take family vacations and field trips when
convenient. It allows the whole family to experience learning activities.
These families believe home schooling allows them to have a closer relationship
with their children.
Spiritual -
Many families feel there has to be a clean,
safe and moral environment for their children to learn in.
They see todays public schools as troubled by violence,
loss of spiritual or moral framework and are concerned that their
children not be placed in situations where they must deal with
strangers, often with issues involving drugs and sex, while they are
trying to go to school.
Part of the Spiritual focus really comes down to wanting our children
to be able to grow and learn as Children and not be thrust into an
adults world that defines the daily life at a public school.
