Thank you for subscribing to the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Public E-Mail List!
The Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary is administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and was designated in 1980. The Sanctuary encompasses 1,252 nautical miles surrounding the Islands of San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa and Santa Barbara. The Sanctuary includes both open ocean and nearshore habitats that provide refuge to 27 species of marine mammals, over 60 species of seabirds, the state’s most valuable fish and invertebrate species and giant kelp forests. In addition to the abundance of natural resources, historical and cultural resources include over 200 documented shipwrecks and numerous Chumash Native American sites and artifacts.
We look forward to sending you news and information about Sanctuary events. We’ll keep you updated on progress with our Management Plan revision process, public meetings of our Sanctuary Advisory Council and its Working Groups, and other special Sanctuary events. For more information, please also refer to our web site at www.cinms.nos.noaa.gov or contact our Santa Barbara office at (805) 966-7107.
