Who We Are:
Tri-County GATE Council
An affiliate of the California Association for the Gifted
The Tri-County GATE Council (TCGC) includes educators and parents in the Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo county area. The group meets monthly from September through May, usually on the second Friday of the month from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM. Most meetings are held at the Ventura Unified School District Education Service Center,255 W Stanley Ave, Ventura, CA. Meetings are open to the public and anyone with an interest in the education of gifted and talented students is welcome. There is no charge to attend meetings, however, school districts that send representatives to the meetings are requested to pay an annual participation fee to help cover administrative expenses. The fee is based on district size.
In addition to regular business and reports from project committees, each meeting has a presentation or study session on a particular topic. The group subscribes to a number of educational journals and maintains a lending library of resource materials.
The TCGC sponsors a several events during the year. These events include day-long workshops for educators presented by regionally and nationally recognized experts in the field of gifted education. These professionals frequently make presentations for parents in the evening following the teacher workshop. For over ten years, TCGC has sponsored a two-day Leadership Conference for 7th and 8th grade students at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. This conference provides an opportunity for 130 students from the area to learn about and practice leadership skills that can be applied in their home schools. Each year mini-grants are awarded to teachers for innovative projects or activities with their students. Mini-grants to students for individual projects are also awarded.
As an affiliate of the California Association for the Gifted (CAG), TCGC provides information to members on developments at the state and national level that affect gifted and talented students and GATE programs. Several TCGC officers and members are current or former members of the Board of Directors for CAG.
