After only a few minutes we noticed a lot of splashing towards the north. Investigation turned up about 25 Risso's with about 18 Dd's intermixed. Captain Dave said this was unusual and speculated that there may be some hybrids present. We watched for about 20 minutes and were intrigued by the almost synchronous way the Risso's cruised. They stayed side by side in a straight line. They would surfaced at almost the same time, then submerged at nearly the same time, all the while stretched out and maintaining their straight chorus line before us. In the meantime the dolphins did their usual cavorting in and around both the Risso's and the Condor. We then noised into painted cave and then headed back. Along the way we found a 1000 plus pod of Dd's to amuse the passengers with and then headed straight back to port. Regards, Mike ------- On the Waterfront: Cargo ship kills whale http://www.presstelegram.com/news/ci_10772522 Press-Telegram Long Beach, CA LONG BEACH: Critics say collisions are inevitable as long as there is no speed limit for vessels in area. By Kris Hanson, Staff Writer Article Launched: 10/20/2008 10:12:34 PM PDT A female whale's carcass is draped over a portion of the bow of a massive container ship in the port of Long Beach on Monday. The dead fin whale was later turned over to the city for disposal at sea. This was the first known whale collision of the year. (Scott Smeltzer/Press-Telegram) Biologists are investigating the death of a fin whale that appears to have been struck and killed by a freight ship near the ports. The 48-foot female was towed into the Port of Long Beach on the bow of a massive container ship late Saturday and remained there Monday as marine biologists examined the corpse. The whale's body was later released to city officials for disposal at sea, said Joe Cordero, a wildlife biologist with the National Marine Fisheries Service. It appears the ship struck the whale while traversing a busy shipping lane leading into the port. The ship's captain told investigators he wasn't aware of the incident until arriving in the harbor, Cordero said. It's the first known fatal ship strike of a whale in Southern California this year, following a tragic fall 2007 whale migration season during which at least three, and as many as five, endangered blue whales were killed by ships off the Southland coast. Those deaths, in September and October 2007, created an outcry among conservationists concerned that authorities were failing to adequately warn ship operators about the unusually large concentrations of blues in the area at the time. The Coast Guard did issue an advisory, but ruled against compelling ships to slow down. Brendan Cummings of the Center for Biological Diversity said the latest death isn't surprising given the federal government's refusal to set speed limits for ships travelingin the area. "If the ships were just made to slow down a bit, many of these strikes could be prevented, or even if they did occur, they wouldn't be fatal," Cummings said. In June, the center filed a lawsuit against the Coast Guard accusing the agency of violating the federal Endangered Species Act by failing to adequately protect whales from ship traffic in Southern California. Under federal law, the Coast Guard is required to work with the National Marine Fisheries Service to develop methods that preserve natural whale habitats and migration patterns. "Even a creature as gigantic as a blue whale doesn't stand a chance against a speeding container ship that's longer than a couple of football fields and weighs thousands of tons," said Andrea Treece, an attorney for the center. "We're lucky to share our coastal waters with these amazing creatures. We need to make sure that we're respecting their home and not mowing them down with our imported goods." Fin whales, an internationally endangered species, typically feed off San Clemente Island, but can be found throughout the U.S. West Coast. The massive creatures grow up to 90 feet in length and weigh as much as 150,000 pounds - making them the world's second-largest mammal behind the blue whale. Fin whales are also known as razorback or finback whales because of the distinctive v-shaped patterns on their backs. -------- A sad ending for 46-foot fin whale struck by ship http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/outposts/2008/10/a-sad-ending-fo.html Los Angeles Times 3:03 PM, October 22, 2008 Somewhere in choppy seas beyond San Francisco is the carcass of the 46-foot fin whale you see in these photos. The whale was struck by a freighter in the shipping lanes and brought unknowingly into Long Beach Harbor on Saturday. It remained pinned to the enormous freighter's bow well after the northbound vessel departed Monday. A shipping agent told Joe Cordaro, a biologist with the National Marine Fisheries Service, that the whale washed off the vessel Tuesday in the Bay Area. It is the first such incident since last September, when a 70-foot blue whale was brought into Long Beach Harbor in the same macabre position. Cordaro said there is an average of one known vessel-whale collision per year off our coast, but added that last year there were four in a 30-day period, all involving blue whales. The fin whale struck by the Chinese freighter was a female between 1 to 3 years of age. Cordaro said it was too large to be removed for examination and port authorities decided the best way to deal with it was to let the ship carry it back to sea. A sad way to migrate, for sure. -- Pete Thomas ------------------- -- Michael Murray Deputy Superintendent for Programs Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary 113 Harbor Way, Suite 150 Santa Barbara, CA 93109-2315 805/884-1464 (voice) 805/568-1582 (fax) michael.murray at noaa.gov http://channelislands.noaa.gov -- Clare Fritzsche Volunteer Administration Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary Channel Islands National Park Schedule for week of November 3: MON-WED - 8am-12pm & 2-6pm, Santa Barbara (805) 966-7107 x366 THU - 9:30-10:45am, Oxnard (805) 382-6149 x105 2-6pm, Santa Barbara (805) 966-7107 x366 FRI - Santa Cruz Island Cellular: (805) 729-0127 Santa Barbara FAX: (805) 568-1582 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The southern sea otter has been listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act since 1977. Sanders' presentation will provide updated information about the return of southern sea otters to portions of their historic range in southern California waters. He will also discuss the expansion of the sea otter population southward and its effect on people and marine life. Sea otters historically were found across the north Pacific, from the northern islands of Japan to Baja California. A lucrative fur trade began in the 18th century, reducing the California sea otter population from approximately 16,000 sea otters to as few as 50 individuals by 1911. Currently, approximately 2,700 sea otters live along the central coast of California. Sanders graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1983 with a degree in aquatic biology. In 1987, he was hired by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to help implement the southern otter recovery and translocation program. After nearly two decades of working with sea otter issues, Sanders joined the Minerals Management Service in 2003, as the Pacific Region's marine mammal and seabird biologist. The "From Shore to Sea" lecture series is jointly sponsored by Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary with generous support from Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. The purpose of the series is to further the understanding of research on the Channel Islands and surrounding waters. The lectures occur at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, 113 Harbor Way in the Santa Barbara Harbor and Wednesday, November 12, 2008, at the Channel Islands National Park Robert J. There was a bit of distraction in the classroom shared with the UCSB Marine Science Institute touch tank; however our "Welcome to the Channel Islands," and Howard's friendly "Step right up" attitude lured curious minds. Next door was the Turtle Dreams exhibit staffed by a very dedicated SB woman who takes in abandoned pets or injured reptiles, etc. The star of the night was a very large steward iguana named Zoe, plus a boa, tortoise, pond turtles, and others. [Image]Getty Images An endangered blue whale spouts near Long Beach, Calif. The court, in its first decision of the term, voted 5-4 that the Navy needs to conduct realistic training exercises to respond to potential threats by enemy submarines. Environmental groups persuaded lower federal courts in California to impose restrictions on sonar use in submarine-hunting exercises to protect whales and other marine mammals. The Bush administration argued that there is little evidence of harm to marine life in more than 40 years of exercises off the California coast. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, which was joined by Justices Samuel Alito, Anthony Kennedy, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. The court did not deal with the merits of the claims put forward by the environmental groups. It said, rather, that federal courts abused their discretion by ordering the Navy to limit sonar use in some cases and to turn it off altogether in others. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please feel free to also invite anyone you think might be interested in attending. UCSB's Coal Oil Point Reserve Monthly Lecture Thursday November 20th 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm Topic: California?s Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative Presenter: Michael Sheehy, Santa Barbara Channelkeeper On Thursday, November 20th, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm Santa Barbara Channelkeeper is providing an informational presentation on California's initiative to establish a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Southern California. MPAs are underwater wilderness areas that limit the extraction of marine species and aim to protect and conserve marine life and habitats. Proposals for the designation of these areas in Southern California will be developed over the next year and will be greatly influenced by public input and participation. Directions and Parking: The presentation will take place at the Cliff House, located at Coal Oil Point Reserve in Goleta. You can find directions to Coal Oil Point Reserve at coaloilpoint.ucnrs.org. Limited parking is only available in the inner parking lot (through the gate) and anyone who parks in the outer parking lot may receive a parking ticket. Carpooling, biking, or walking from Isla Vista with friends and flashlights is encouraged. If you plan on parking in the inner parking lot, please arrive more than 30 minutes early so you will have time to check if there is a spot available or drive to the end of Isla Vista and walk with a friend and flashlight. Please join Michael Sheehy, Channelkeeper?s Marine Conservation Coordinator, to learn more about California?s Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) and how you can get involved. For more information about this event, please email michael at sbck.org or call 563-3377. For more information on the MLPA Initiative and MPAs, please visit www.dfg.ca.gov/mlpa or www.caloceans.org. Santa Barbara Channelkeeper is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of the Santa Barbara Channel and its watersheds. As Channelkeeper?s Marine Conservation Coordinator, Michael Sheehy communicates with and educates the public on marine conservation efforts and issues as they pertain to the Santa Barbara Channel, including engaging the public in the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative process in California?s south coast region. Michael has extensive regional knowledge of the Santa Barbara Channel?s near-shore marine communities and scientific expertise in marine ecology- having worked for more than eight years as a research ecologist with the Marine Science Institute and as a project manager with the research consortium, Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans, at UCSB. Michael has also consulted for non-profit and businesses interests, including advising on such topics as the state of global marine resource management. Reservations are requested. Please send Leeza Charleboix an email to reserve a spot at this lecture. If you miss this lecture, the lecture will be offered again as the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Ty Warner Sea Center Monthly Volunteer Training Lecture Thursday December 11th at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Fleischmann Auditorium 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm. Reservations are also requested for this lecture. Please send Leeza Charleboix an email to reserve a spot at the lecture and note the date of the lecture. This sighting and a wonderful pod of Common Dolphins was a real treat for the 20 passengers who came to join us for whale watching in MID NOVEMBER. This was my first Fin Whale sighting in all the years I have been privileged to be on the Channel helping visitors understand the magic of this special place we live. We saw the East Anacapa pair of Peregrine Falcons near the light house. On the way over we saw a baleen whale - maybe Humpback. On the way home a large pod of Common Dolphins was close to platform Gina. They did some jumps next to the Vanguard. Beautiful day, energetic students but plenty more Ice Plant to get. Apologies for my late report. Last Saturday on the Condor, along with Shirley Johnson, the Condor crew, friends of the crew, plus 5 paying customers, we saw a different Cetacean for each of the paying customers. We saw a stinky Minke, which came up right at the bow of the boat...a great Minke sighting. We saw a blue whale for a bit. We then found a fin whale and stayed with it a while. We found a big group of common dolphins. And lastly we found two different groups of Risson's dolphins. The first group, not surprisingly were near a large flotilla of squid boats waiting for dark. It was another glorious day out on the water!
