We appreciate the postings that folks post messages to the RAIN listserv with regard to recent trips, or when a relevant article comes through that might shed some light on what we do. We have had a few requests to remind everyone to refrain from chatty postings--you are always welcome to respond directly to the sender if you would like to send a personal response--please do not send it to the whole list unless it is informational. Many thanks! As a reminder, here are the guidelines from your training manual for the listserv: LIST RULES 1. No posting of chain or personal emails. 2. No profanity. 3. Keep information relevant to ocean, CINC, sanctuary, and Park activities. 4. Use the list when trying to find a substitute for a boat trip or outreach event, unless you want to contact individuals by personal email or phone. Responses should be posted to the list so that everyone will know that a spot has been taken. Also, please cc: the calendar coordinator (clare.fritzsche at noaa.gov ). 5. Your post should be directed to all members of the list. Please do not make posts towards specific individuals (use personal email for that). 6. File size guideline is 60kb. Emails that are too large will be rejected. Try not to post files that are too large, or that contain many images. Please post links to large Web articles, with a brief description of the article in the text. 7. When replying to an email be sure to select REPLY ALL if you would like everyone to see your response. Otherwise, reply directly to the sender. 8. Do not cc: a long list of email recipients. If you are emailing something to the list that you are emailing to personal contacts, please send out a separate email or your post may not go through. Thanks again! The /tomol/ connected Chumash communities and continues to be significant to their culture. In September 2001, the Chumash resumed their /tomol/ crossings by paddling to the island of /Limuw/ (Santa Cruz Island) from Channel Island Harbor. Salazar has participated in seven crossings as part of an annual celebration of their culture. He will share how these journeys are an affirmation of Chumash tradition, which contemporary Chumash regard as a gift to their ancestors and children. Salazar is a Chumash storyteller, a traditional Chumash paddler, a practitioner of Chumash spiritual ceremonies, and his village's fast runner. He has dedicated most of his life to learning about Native American cultures and sharing that knowledge with the young and old, including over 100 presentations in California schools. His family survived the mission period and is one of a small number of families that can trace both Chumash and Tataviam ancestry. Like many people with California Indian ancestry, his family's story is one of pride in their Native American heritage. He is also one of many Native Americans that consider themselves a person of the Earth. As a person of the Earth he considers himself no better than hawk, bear, lizard, trees, or rocks. Salazar was taught by many elders that to be humble and respectful are the two most important traits to have, so with humility he remarks that he is "a storyteller, paddler, spiritual person and, for an old guy, pretty fast." Blue whales are an endangered species that frequent the Santa Barbara Channel during the summer months to feed on krill, their primary food source. Blue whales in the Eastern Pacific are the only known recovering blue whale population in the world with a size estimated at nearly 2000 animals, which is about 10% of the world population. Although the population has grown since protection began in 1966, additional conservation efforts are needed to ensure the population's continued recovery is not impeded by sources of human caused mortality such as ship strikes and entanglement in fishing gear. To all, as you may have heard, we have a new "Friends" group to support our Park. The new Channel Islands Park Foundation (CIPF) has their IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit status and NPS cooperative agreement in place, and they are ready to start recruiting members, raising money and showcasing the park.. The start-up board of directors has been staffed thus far by a small but dedicated group of volunteers who now need help taking this brand-new organization to the next level. CIPF has planned a beach clean-up event, which is timed to coincide with Coastal Clean-up Day on September 20th. The event is planned as a "dry run" to help us gauge the logistics and planning required to make this an annual Foundation event. Friends and family of board members, park staff and volunteers are invited to participate in the marine debris-gathering day-trip at Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island. I encourage you all to "Get Dirty and Make a Difference" on September 20th. Please contact the Foundation treasurer Peter Haggerty at p_haggerty at sbcglobal.netgrowmony@juno.com if you are able to come. Please RSVP to Leeza Charleboix. Hope you can make it! Shauna Join us for a very special Island Fox training class. Saturday, October 4, 2008. 9:30am?12:30pm: Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Fleischmann Auditorium. Afternoon: Santa Barbara Zoo (time to be announced). Learn about Island Fox natural history, research and conservation efforts by many organizations and meet an Island Fox! RSVP by email to seacrew at sbnature2.org and Leeza Charleboix will send you a confirmation email of your reservation. Please note that it is suggested that you RSVP as soon as possible to ensure a spot at the training class. ********************************************************************** The Island Fox is found only on six of the eight California Channel Islands. On the islands of Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Catalina, the Island Fox is listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. You will learn about the Island Fox, why it is endangered, what is being done to save this charismatic tiny carnivore, and how you can help. This is your chance to increase your knowledge about the ecosystems on the Channel Islands and how they have been upset by the low populations of Island Foxes. You can educate others about the need to save the Island Fox and its habitat. Your help with the education about this endangered canine will be invaluable to the work underway to save this unique species from extinction. Not only will you learn about the Island Fox, but you will also meet one. You will be introduced to Finnigan, an Island Fox from Santa Rosa Island, at the Santa Barbara Zoo where we will learn more about the species and the care they need. We hope to see you on October 4th for a fun learning experience and a chance to meet fellow volunteers from many organizations. *** Presenters *** Paul Collins Curator of Vertebrate Zoology Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Keri Dearborn Vice President of Education Friends of the Island Fox Leeza Charleboix Volunteer and Interpretation Manager Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Ty Warner Sea Center Pat Meyer President Friends of the Island Fox Maria Petueli Education Coordinator Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Ty Warner Sea Center Friends of the Island Fox Volunteers Santa Barbara Zoo Staff *** Participating Organizations *** Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History - www.sbnature2.org Ty Warner Sea Center - www.sbnature.org/seacenter Friends of the Island Fox - islandfox.org Santa Barbara Zoo - www.santabarbarazoo.org Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary - channelislands.noaa.gov Channel Islands National Park - www.nps.gov/chis Other local organizations ********************************************************************** Leeza Charleboix Volunteer and Interpretation Manager Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Ty Warner Sea Center 211 Stearns Wharf Santa Barbara, CA 93101 (805) 962-2526 ext. 104 seacrew at sbnature2.org -- Shauna Bingham Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary 3600 S. Captain Dave did a great job finding the blues--we spent an hour and a half between the islands with two pairs of blues as well as two individuals. Fabulous sightings, including some racing behavior and one exciting tail fluke. A passenger got a beautifully clear photo of one whale's ventral pleats. We rounded things off with an enjoyable visit to Painted Cave just as the sun was coming out, and on our way home we were greeted by a large pod of Dc's, with adorable football-sized calves in tow. The passengers--several from Ireland, Scotland, England, and Santa Barbara--were very appreciative of our information. One man from Ireland made a point of telling all three volunteers that we had made his trip and he wouldn't have understood anything he was seeing without our help! This company is located in Goleta. Please contact the person listed below if you are interested! Shauna ** *JOB POSTING* * * * * *ANALYST * *GREENERIDGE SCIENCES, INC.* *_Brief job description_*_ _ Greeneridge Sciences, Inc. places acoustic recorders on floor of the Beaufort Sea, Alaska to record the calls made by bowhead whales during their fall migration. Once the data is downloaded from these recorders, Greeneridge hires a temporary staff to perform "manual data analysis." Analysts look at screens of spectrograms and determine which sounds are probably from bowhead whales, then process those sounds to determine the location of the sound source, if possible. This season's work will probably span November and December 2008 with some overshoot into January 2009. Greeneridge plans to hire up to 15 Analysts. *_Hours_*_ _ The hours are very flexible, and at the discretion of each Analyst. The work must be done at the Greeneridge lab, off of Hollister Avenue, near Fairview, in Goleta. During the analysis effort, the lab will be open from early morning until late in the evening, including weekends. Analysts are free to set their own schedules during open office hours, and will probably be asked to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. Attendance at a weekly meeting at a certain set time will also be required. *_Pay_*_ _ Greeneridge hires Analyst Trainees/Analysts temporarily. The pay is hourly -- rates are still being determined but should fall within the $15.00/hour range. Analysts are paid once every two weeks, according to the number of hours worked. Potential Analysts are required to attend one unpaid orientation session to evaluate their interest in the job. *_Requirements_*_ _ Greeneridge is contacting the *Channel Islands Naturalist Corps Volunteer Program* because of the interdisciplinary nature of your environmental background and passion for protecting the marine environment. This work is on the cutting edge of current research in underwater acoustics and marine mammals so would be appropriate for CINC volunteers interested in either topic, or their interaction. The project also deals with issues relating to mitigation of impacts of work on Alaska's North Slope and in the Beaufort Sea, so is of interest from an environmental management perspective. Greeneridge would prefer to hire individuals who are able to work independently, have a strong work ethic, and have an interest in the topic. __ *_Organization Information_*____ Greeneridge Sciences, Inc. - website is www.greeneridge.com .__ *_Contact Information_*_ (How should I apply?) _ Contact Alice Green -- (805) 895-9907 (cell) or alice.green at cox.net _ _ *_Deadline_*_ _ First orientation will likely be mid-October 2008. -- Shauna Bingham Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary 3600 S. It is a situation which I believe impairs our efforts to interpret and spread an appreciation of the Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary. It is a situation, which quite frankly, makes no sense at all to me. I am talking about the parking around the Island Packers building in Ventura Harbor. All the parking spaces near the water are marked for a three hour limit. This seems like over half the parking. There are no stores or restaurants around the Island Packer building. I ask you, what can anyone do in under three hours at this harbor location? Boat owners don't come & go in under three hours. Island Packers doesn't have one trip that is under three hours. So when I got to Island Packers 1/2 hour before the trip left, I along with the other passengers, had to drive past dozens & dozens of empty parking spaces, a quarter of a mile down to find a parking space with no time limits. And guess where I ended up parking? In front of the stores and restaurants down the road. I took up a parking space which could have better served the patrons of that part of the harbor for three hours or less, while most of the spaces in between remained empty. This seems like a goofy situation which serves neither the resident retail establishments of Ventura Harbor, nor Island Packers, nor the National Park or Marine Sanctuary. If you would like to make comment on it, call the Ventura Harbor Port District at 805//642-8538. Shirley Johnson ************** Psssst...Have you heard the news? If the kit gets low on items, please ask a crew member to get the box or a handful of whatever you need (in plenty of time before the passengers board). When you place the brochures in the kit, it works well to stack/stand them up on the one side as usual. There are plenty of regular marine mammal sightings sheets in the binder. I realize the binder rings are about to give out, but hopefully they will hang for awhile longer. If it becomes unbearable, let me know. Many thanks for keeping the kit so tidy. It has been looking quite spiffy these days. Aloha, Debra **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? Yours truly covered an area from our meeting hall to the East Beach Pavilion bath house. Besides finding the expected trash and debris, I was shocked to find a mile long area of East Beach hiding minute plastic pellets in its sand all along the damp area just above the receding surf line. The pellets were the size of large granules of sand, sometimes clumped together, but most often mixed with the sand and bits of shells, always laying lightly on top. Did anyone else notice these types of plastic pellets invading the shores you cleaned up? It was obviously a very labor intensive act to pick them up, and they would not count for much in the weighing in at the end. However, as a frequent swimmer and jogger at East Beach for decades, this realization that an "invasive" type of sand is showing up on a familiar beach is discomforting. The swells were high but seemed to subside as we got closer to Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa. We came across a couple of Blues who delighted the 29 passengers on board. I could see more whales in the distance, in particularly 2 that seemed to be blowing often. Captain Dave saw them too and decided to investigate, we were all glad he did. It turned out to be a cow/calf pair of Humpbacks! I could have sworn I recognized the cow, as she had this distinctive white stripe down her dorsal, but the last time a few months ago she did not have a calf with her. They stayed right near the boat during their dives. All of a sudden 2 Blues appeared at the bow at a very quick pace, we were surrounded by both Blues and Humpbacks! It seemed as though both pairs were hurrying to meet up when they were around the boat. We then found another pair of Blues that seemed to be resting, then all of a sudden picked up their pace and decided to cross the bow at a pretty good clip, one of them even brought its' head out of the water as it crossed us. After the amazing viewing of the whales we began to head to Santa Cruz Island, but not before checking out a mega pod of Long Beak Commons. There were so many calves and a bunch of acrobatic ones in the bunch! Another amazing day of whale watching! ~ Carol -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I checked out snopes.com, which is usually quite good at providing true/false analyses of a wide variety of stuff, including photographs of animals; but I could not find any evidence that they have looked at this one. On the other hand, some weird stuff happens. I was on the Condor a couple years ago and we had a particularly playful Humpback. He/she would wave its flukes back and forth under water for us. Gave us a big burp of bubbles from far below us, etc., etc. The coolest of all was this: it was deep enough that we could not see the whale, but it apparently blew an air ring--a perfect torus (doughnut shaped) bubble that was 2 or 3 ft across when it hit the surface. (It was not a bunch of small bubbles arranged in a ring.) The cross-sectional diameter of the air in the ring was about 6 inches. (Exact dimensions may be off--it was a while back.) Very cool. Out near the gap, we first found one smaller blue that we had passed and turned around to go back for. After some nice views, we moved ahead towards other spouts in the distance. We came upon our second blue whale, which was lighter in color and larger in size. We got even closer views this time. After viewing this second whale a bit, the first whale came charging up to this second whale in hot pursuit. The first whale was probably a male, the second one a female. When the first whale got near the second whale the head mostly came out of the water, giving us a better than typical view of the usual feeding or traveling blue whale. Probably, or possibly, these two whales mated as they swirled and rolled around at the surface. Nothing graphic to report though. :( After this, we found two blues together, and then a fifth and final whale, solo. The final whale gave us a pretty good jolt of excitement, as it surfaced about 10-15 yards from the bow of the boat. Quite spectacular to see this big beauty surface so close to the boat. All in all everyone got lots and lots of great views of blue whales today, and two encounters with groups of commons, which never, ever cease to delight. On the way home I observed a lot of bottlenose dolphin all along the coast from Carp. to Ventura. When nearing Ventura I did notice a very distinct "current flow" paralleling the shore, in fairly close which seemed to be the "freeway" the dolphins were following. I haven't seen many bottlenose near the shore for a while, and then today the whole coast seemed to be lined with them, plus this distinct current. Worth noting, I thought. Happy sightings! Visibility was often less than a mile, but ? the way across we encountered a large pod of common dolphins doing their thing. Twenty minutes later, we almost ran into 2 orcas (one was the male with the floppy dorsal fin) possibly just finishing a meal below the surface. Two more females were soon spotted, and we stayed with them for about 45 minutes as they dove repeatedly and milled around the boat. We weren?t so lucky in being able to spot any blues with the bad visibility, so we headed over to the west end of SCI and made our way past the cliffs to Painted Cave before heading back to harbor. Not a very scenic trip due to the fog, but the passengers were pretty happy about the orcas. Bart Francis -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It seems that this is the best I have heard so far. I also have looked into several sources. I guess that it's a very hard thing to study in the wild and who would want to disturb some one in that condition any way. A little respect may be a good thing. (This is just me) I don't think I would like a bunch of researchers in on my child's birth. (But again that's me). I am not done with this yet, I shall keep looking. I also wanted to pass on a story that Matt shared with me. About a gray whale giving birth down south. I guess that a researcher saw this??? Any way this mother Gray was in labor and seemed to be having a hard time. The calf ended up being breached head first. They saw her do a head stand holding her breath for 40 minutes. Matt said that the calf survived. That's all I know about it??? Thanks every one. Since it was your question, you might want to pass this info on to the rest of the CINC corps. Valerie Olson Begin forwarded message:From: Jason Wood Date: September 26, 2008 9:47:30 AM PDTTo: Valerie Olson Subject: Re: Whale Labor Hi Valerie, That is an interesting question, and a hard one to answer when it comes to wild whales. The best information out there is probably from whales held in captivity. As far as I know, no one has tried to study this question in wild killer whales. A quick google search for 'labor length in killer whales birth' comes up with times in the region of 2 to 4 hours of labor. My guess is that, as with most species, there is going to be a fair deal of variability, with complicated births taking much longer. Hope that helps, Jason At 12:07 PM 9/23/2008, you wrote: Hi Jason, I am a member of the Whale Museum, but live in Santa Barbara. The question is, 'How long does it take a whale to deliver a calf,i.e., how long is the labor?' I have checked several books and not found anything yet. I thoughtyou might have some insight into this question. Specifically, do youhave any idea where we could find information on time involved forthe delivery? (I thought that there might be more data for Orcasince they are so heavily studied.)
