Gull mating is still going on as the 96 fourth graders from Pasadena witnessed today (they were split into groups by Island Packer's naturalist). Dave Begun was also leading a hike and has a great insight into island knowledge that I could only hope to have but am determined to keep working on. I had a small group of six. Captain Dave headed offshore where Mns have been seen recently, but no luck. We then headed up the coast. After an hour and a half, our patience paid off: a Mn cow/calf pair was spotted breaching behind the boat. Calambokidis will unveil recent findings on the behavior of blue whales in the Santa Barbara Channel shipping lanes and strategies for avoiding ship strikes. His lecture will include stunning footage of blue whales obtained while filming a National Geographic special that aired in March. Blue whales, an endangered species with an estimated population of 2,000 animals, are found in higher concentrations off California than in any other location in the world. Additionally, in his presentation, Calambokidis will chart the abundance of humpback whales in the entire North Pacific Ocean using photo-identification data. He is a principal investigator for an international humpback whale research project known as SPLASH (Structure of Populations, Levels of Abundance and Status of Humpbacks) and works with over 400 scientists from 10 countries. Calambokidis, co-founder of Cascadia Research, served as the principal investigator of more than 50 research studies on marine mammals, marine birds, and pollution. He has co-authored over 60 papers in scientific journals and two books: the award-winning /A/ /Guide to Marine Mammals of Greater Puget Sound/ and /Blue Whales/. Calambokidis, is an adjunct faculty member of The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. The "From Shore to Sea" lecture series is jointly sponsored by Channel Islands National Park and Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary with generous support from Santa Barbara Maritime Museum. The purpose of the series is to further the understanding of current research on the Channel Islands and surrounding waters. The lectures occur at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, 113 Harbor Way in the Santa Barbara Harbor and Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at the Channel Islands National Park Robert J. Can someone take my morning shift at the Coast Guard Safe Boating Day. See the information below, it involves picking up the materials. Thanks, Joanna Greetings! Thank you for volunteering to do outreach at the 4th Annual Channel Islands Harbor Safe Boating Expo this Saturday, May 9th. We really appreciate it! Here is some information for you about the event. Schedule You have signed up for the following hours: 8:15am - 1pm - Joanna Guttman and Sally Narkevic 1pm - 5:30pm - Tom Flor and Warren Glaser Joanna, thank you so much for signing up to bring the materials to the event. Please call Shauna at 729-3275 to set up a time to pick up the materials in the CINMS Oxnard office; Thursday would be best. Likewise Tom, thank you for agreeing to bring the materials back on Monday; please call Shauna to arrange for a time do so. Parking The event will be located at 4201 South Victoria, at the parking lot of the Coast Guard station at Channel Islands Harbor. Parking will be available nearby, such as the lot near Channel Islands Sportfishing or the dirt lot across from the Coast Guard. Please ask a Coast Guard person (such as Henry Goldman), where our booth is located, which should be near the NOAA National Weather Service booth. Henry or other event staff will have a table for our booth. But once you unload the materials, Joanna, you will need to park your car in one of the lots. Sally, if you could please be parked and ready by 8:15am, you could then help Joanna unload her car. Here is a list of the materials: 2 chairs CINMS and CINP pull-up banners blue tablecloth with logos CINC outreach kit Protecting Your Channel Islands brochures CINP newspapers and brochures posters dolly You will not have a canopy so please bring sunscreen, sunhats and water! The event runs from 9am to 5pm, so please have everything set up by 9am. Probably the best thing you can hand out to visitors that day is the Protecting Your Channel Islands brochure and the park newspaper. For folks who take trips to the islands, the brochure gives the gps coordinates for the marine protected areas, including the newly expanded areas. Likewise, the park newspaper is good to give to island visitors as well; the pages in the back entitled "Limiting Your Impact" and "Boating and Kayaking" are important for them to read. If people can answer trivia questions about the islands (or learn something substantial about them), you are welcome to give out a poster. There will only be a limited amount, so please make sure you save half for the afternoon crew. There are rubber bands in the outreach kit. During the day, there will be USCG vessel rides and helicopter search and rescue demonstrations, and so you are welcome to take turns and experience these features while one of you stays at our booth. Tom and Warren: The event ends at 5pm, which is when you can begin to break down the booth. Tom, you should be able to drive your car over and load the materials once everything is packed up and folks have cleared the area. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for representing the sanctuary and park so well! This is a great ratio of experts. Todd McGrath* has more than 300 days at sea studying pelagic avifauna, with more than 120 days at sea on each coast of the United States as well as visiting Australia, South Africa and Antarctica to view seabirds. He has served on the Board of Directors of Audubon California and is currently the senior leader of all Los Angeles Audubon, Buena Vista Audubon and San Diego Bird Festival pelagic trips. A resident of California since 1997, Todd lives in Marina del Rey with his wife Pamela and their two daughters Katelyn and Sarah. In 2005, Todd co-authored the authoritative paper "/*Pelagic Birding in the Southern California Bight*/" and is widely regarded as a leading expert on west and east coast seabirds. *David Pereksta* is a Supervisory Fish and Wildlife Biologist for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, where he works to conserve habitat for threatened and endangered species and migratory birds. Throughout his career with various Federal and State agencies, he has studied several imperiled bird species including snowy plovers, piping plovers, least terns, ospreys, northern goshawks, brown pelicans, and spotted owls. Recently, David has assisted Cornell University in their searches for the Ivory-billed Woodpecker in Arkansas during the 2006, 2007, and 2008 field seasons. An avid birder for nearly 30 years, he has birded throughout North America and the American tropics, including leading trips to Belize, Costa Rica, and Peru. David has been an active participant in southern California pelagic trips since 1994 and has been a regular leader for Los Angeles Audubon, The Searcher, and The Condor Express since 2000. * Dave Compton *is a native of Tennessee who lived a previous life in publishing before discovering birds in the early 1990s. From that point, he birded like mad around his adopted home in Santa Barbara, California, while making the gradual transition from professional editor to full-time biologist. He has served as Santa Barbara County's subregional editor for North American Birds since 2000, coordinated the Santa Barbara Audubon Society's Spring Seabird Migration Census in Goleta for four years, and served on the California Bird Records Committee in 2006-2008. *Wes Fritz* worked on many environmental protection projects by CA Fish & Game, BLM and other environmental groups, for federally-protected threatened and endangered species. He spent five years researching for the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties' Breeding Bird Surveys, and also worked on Important Bird Areas of California (IBAC). He has done bird surveys with China Lake NWC (CA), Edwards AFB (CA), Ft. Irwin NTC (CA) and a few other military installations. And worked with Vandenberg Air Force Base (CA) on conservation projects. During the 2006 ABA Conference in Ventura, CA, he was Field Trip Coordinator. Wes has led many fieldtrips for various Audubon groups, the Nature Conservancy, the American Birding Association, Western Field Ornithologists, and a few bird festivals. And ehe also co-leeds many deepwater pelagic trips for Los Angeles Audubon. * Jon Feenstra* is a native of Appalachian New Jersey and a life-long outdoors enthusiast. He moved to Los Angeles in 2000 to continue his education and holds a PhD in chemical physics from Caltech. However, since birds are his true passion, he works as a freelance environmental consultant and professional birding guide so he can spend every day outside. His is a co-author, along with Todd McGrath, of the foundational articles in Los Angeles Audubon's journal outlining the current knowledge of seabird distribution in the Southern California Bight. If there's a boat out looking for birds off Southern California, Jon is on it. _*Pelagic seabirds are amazing*_ -- you will search for them offshore near San Miguel Island and you never know what you will see. At 11:04 Captain found the 1st Humpback, (here we saw the energetic/beautiful Molas. He then took us to the 2nd single Mn's. We watched only 8 minutes, because out in the distance, the Captain spotted several spouts towards the western part of SCI. According to Ctn. Matt, there were 18 Mn's, among them a cow/calf pair (Mom was quite young a.c.t. Matt), as well as a juvenile. All actively feeding, thus we saw many, many flukes, even on shallow dives. We could hear their exhale, and a loud trumpet blow. One rolled over showing us one of his flippers. The whales were completely oblivious to our presence. Finally, we visited the mouth of painted cave, and were taken back to the harbor along the coast, as a final treat for the happy passengers. Weathering and the Fallout Plume of Heavy Oil from Strong Petroleum Seeps Near Coal Oil Point, CA from /Environmental Science & Technology/ (subscription required) Christopher Reddy Director Coastal Ocean Institute Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution I investigate what happens to oil spilled into the ocean---with an eye toward finding better ways to "engineer" cleanups. But the brass ring has always hung out of my reach. When oil hits the water, chemical changes start occurring fast. It's not like I can predict where or when an accidental spill is going to occur, so I usually can't get to spills fast enough. I literally and figuratively miss the boat. When the /M/V Cosco Busan/ struck the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in November 2007 and spilled 58,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil, for example, I had to mobilize singlehandedly to get plane tickets, transport scientific gear, outline a plan to take samples, and arrange for a boat. In the immediate aftermath of an oil spill, rapid response teams have their hands full with their primary mission of preventing more spillage and mitigating the damage. They aren't in the business of sampling and studying oil. It took me a week to get on the scene, and during those precious seven days, nature already had moved the oil and changed its chemical composition. What happened to the oil in those seven days? "Oil," you see, is actually a motley stew made up of thousands of different compounds---each with distinctive chemical structures that give them distinct properties. When oil spills into the ocean, some compounds evaporate, while others break down in sunlight, or dissolve in seawater, or get eaten by microbes, or sink and stick to sediments. By the time I arrived, I had missed half the action. I could not explain what happened and why with much certainty. * An oil spill every day * But I got a break in January 2005. I was aboard a 20-foot motorboat a mile offshore from the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) with my colleague, Dave Valentine, a UCSB marine geochemist. The water was calm and flat---dampened by a widespread, iridescent film of oil on the surface. Big oil patties floated about. The air smelled like diesel fuel. By any definition, it was a classic oil spill. But we were the only boat in the area---no Coast Guard, no oil booms, no throngs of cleanup crews in white Tyvak suits, no helicopters, no media, and no shipwreck. Why? Because this oil spill was entirely natural. The oil had seeped from reservoirs below the seafloor, leaked through cracks in the crust about 150 feet (45 meters) under water. Lighter than seawater, the escaped oil floated to the ocean surface. It was one of those days in your career that you never forget. Adrenaline raced through my body, and my brain was in overload, thinking about the research that could be done at this site. Nature was offering an ongoing experiment that was impossible (not to mention illegal) for me to perform. Off Santa Barbara, there's an oil spill every day, allowing us to take a close look at a process that previously eluded our grasp. I vividly remember standing on the boat and calling my lab manager, Bob Nelson, telling him to book a plane ticket and pack a long list of gear. We returned days later to start investigating the fate of oil in the coastal ocean, using this readily accessible natural laboratory. *Following an oily trail * I had learned about natural oil seeps in graduate school, and I knew that they account for about 50 percent of oil that ends up in the coastal environment. That's five times as much oil as is delivered by accidental spills. The Santa Barbara seeps, for example emit 5,280 to 6,600 gallons (nearly 20 to 25 tons) of oil per day, and natural seeps have been active for hundreds to thousands of years. Local Native Americans used the oil to waterproof their boats. But I just didn't appreciate how spectacular they were and what a powerful opportunity they provided to study oil spills. In our initial research, Dave and his scuba-diving team collected bubbles of oil that trail out in a line from a seafloor seep (we call these "stringers"). We compared this oil with samples extracted from a nearby offshore drill rig, which tapped into the same reservoir that leaked oil out of the seafloor seeps. We analyzed the specimens using a technique called "comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC?GC)." The instrument reveals distinct chemical "biomarkers" in the oil, which like genetic markers allow us to track the oil's source and lineage. It also lets us identify and differentiate the thousands of compounds that oil is composed of. To our surprise, we discovered for the first time that on the oil's journey up to the seafloor, approximately 1,000 compounds in the oil were devoured by microbes living in the rocks beneath the sea floor. Some ate the oil and created intermediate byproducts. These were subsequently eaten by other microbes that likely converted the oil into natural gas. We also compared the compounds in oil seeping out of the seafloor with those in oil at the sea surface. We discovered that about 10 percent of the remaining compounds in the oil evaporated within seconds or minutes after it had floated to the surface. That was something we had never been quick enough on the scene to measure before in accidental spills. With UCSB graduate student George Wardlaw as lead author and three other co-authors, we reported our findings in the October 2008 issue of /Environmental Science & Technology/. Then it was on to the next steps---tracking how much oil at the surface sank back into the mud atop the seafloor. * The fallout from the seeps * In the summer of 2007, we brought in a boat quite a bit bigger than the little motorboat we used in 2005---Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's (WHOI) 274-foot-long research vessel /Atlantis/, the mother ship for the research submarine /Alvin/. The two usually work in the deep ocean, but this time /Alvin/ dove to only a fraction of its 4,500-meter depth capacity, allegedly setting a record for its shallowest science dive ever. We used /Alvin/ to observe spectacular shows of oil and gas seeping and bubbling up from cracks at the ocean bottom. And one evening after /Alvin/ surfaced for the night, I, Dave, and Chris Farwell, a UCSB undergraduate student at the time (and my cabin mate aboard /Atlantis/) began collecting samples of sediments starting 2.2 nautical miles (4 kilometers) downstream of the oil seeps. We sampled 16 locations with various water depths over a 35-square-mile (90-square-kilometer) grid, with an additional comparison sample obtained from within the seep field itself. I tip my hat to Capt. A.D. Colburn, the /Atlantis /crew, and shipboard technician Dave Sims for making this sampling effort so seamless in shallow coastal waters in which they don't typically work. We finished as the sun was rising and the /Alvin/ group was preparing the submarine for another dive. After the cruise, under Dave's (and occasionally my) direction, Chris began a thorough study on these samples. He came to Woods Hole for a week, staying with me and my wife Bryce and working in my lab. (To earn his keep, I made him scrape wallpaper in our house.) Chris found plenty of oil in the samples to keep him busy. Once again, biomarkers revealed by GC?GC showed that the oil in the sediments matched the oil floating on the sea surface, the oil leaking out of the seeps, and the oil extracted from the subseafloor reservoir. We could say with confidence that the oil we found in the sediments came from the oil reservoir and not from an accidental spill or runoff from land. In collaboration with Libe Washburn, a physical oceanographer at UCSB, Dave and Chris estimated that oil on the surface stayed in the water from about 10 hours to five days before settling back into the sediments. Chris's study revealed that the oil content was highest in sediments closest to the seeps and gradually diminished over distance as it was dispersed by currents---much the way smoke trails away in the wind. At WHOI, Bob Nelson and Emily Peacock found that the composition of the oil in the sediments had changed significantly from what we had found floating in the ocean surface; only a few, very large chemical compounds remained in the sediments. Our findings were published in the May 2009 issue of /Environmental Science & Technology. / *Munching microbes* Nature had done an amazing job on the oil, but nature appears to have a limit on its capacity to break down oil. Why this happens is one of my keen research interests. We think the compounds in the sediments have remained because their bulky structures make them hard to evaporate, insoluble in water, and more difficult for microbes to digest. Microbes are astonishing and voracious little critters. They can eat almost anything, but our research at the Santa Barbara oil seeps shows they do it systematically: They select compounds whose size and shape are the easiest for them to degrade. So they will chow down on a simple, straight-chained alkane, but will avoid a hopane with twice as many carbon and hydrogen atoms bonded in rings that offer difficult access for enzymes. If they were at a buffet, they would devour the pudding, soup, and rice first and eschew the chewy corned beef and stale crusty bread. Another result of our study is that for the first time, we can quantify the amount of oil residue that ends up in seafloor sediments after a "natural" oil spill. To compare the amount the oil in the Santa Barbara sediments with a figure people might understand, it's equivalent to 8 to 80 times the oil spilled in the /Exxon Valdez/ accident. But our study by no means is a direct comparison on the overall fate and impacts of the /Exxon Valdez/ spill and the Santa Barbara seeps. That estimate is as close as we could get, since we don't know how thick the layer of sediments is. But before this research, for all we knew, it could have been the equivalent of 0.0001 or 10,000 /Exxon Valdez/ spills. Many people in the Santa Barbara region still believe that oil found in the ocean and on nearby beaches comes from oil rigs, but our research points the finger at the natural oil seep. At the same time, this natural oil seep is teaching us many extraordinary lessons about how oil responds in our ecosystem. And that offers better strategies for people to respond to the oil they spill accidentally into our ecosystems. / This research was funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Minerals Management Service, the California Toxic Substance Research and Training Program, the Department of Energy, the WHOI Coastal Ocean Institute, and the Seaver Institute./ -- Shauna Bingham Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator NOAA Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary 3600 S. Message-ID: All, First the facts: No marine mammal sightings 4 hikes, 5 foxes I was fortunate to spend Friday and Saturday on ESCI. The weather was PERFECT - overcast in the morning burning off by 11ish each day. The temps were ideal for hiking as well - mid-60's with a slight breeze to keep you from getting too hot. The fog burned off in time for the morning hike visitors to enjoy wonderful views from Cavern Point. Island foxes are becoming more abundant. We saw foxes on all 4 of my hikes! Fortunately, I was able to work with them throughout the weekend to improve their timing (haha). Here's what I mean. On the two hikes on Friday, they appeared in the campground in the middle of my talk on "Return of the Natives". On Saturday morning's hike, we had just begun walking up the canyon towards stop 3 (the fox stop) when one came down out of the canyon to everyone's delight. Finally, for my Saturday afternoon hike, we worked it out and they got it perfect. I was standing by the diatomaceous earth with the visitors looking at me while I was talking about why the foxes were smaller and how they got to the islands when behind me, a fox began wandering down the canyon. I took the opportunity to pause and ask everyone to turn around and look at the star of the talk. Everyone shouted with glee as the cameras came out and lots of flash memory bits were used. If you're leading a hike in the near future, hopefully they won't have forgotten what we worked out this weekend and provide you with the same perfect timing! They are here feeding so it stands to reason they do it where ever they have the opportunity to create a bait ball. Have not seen Blues do it, so am curious as to the knowledge base on this latter, as well and Mr. Z. The day started out somewhat foggy, with calm seas. We, Kate Eschelbach, Don Gillies (photo ID) and myself, headed out across the channel in search of whales. I spotted a huge splash off on the horizon...and we were off! Two more breaches off in the distance were seen by those who were at the bow and were especially eager to find whales. As with all wildlife viewing, your chances of seeing things increases proportionally with the amount of time actually spent looking. Like when a whale breaches, it may only happen once, and I for one hate the thought of missing something so exciting. But this whale did breach two more times and it was fun to get a few eyes pointing in the right direction. As we approached, we found lots of humpbacks. There was a mom and calf, plus other pairs around, and more spouts off in the distance. We got lots of good looks at eight different humpbacks, plus more off in the distance. Towards the end of our time here one humpback approached the boat closely a few times and gave everyone a big thrill. So we all got to bask in the glow of a humpback whale snot facial. He must have responded to the singing of "Happy Birthday", and came over to join the festivities. The birthday boy was a teacher from a S.B. school, and he had a bunch of students along. They take a whale field trip every year. At one point we took a very short side trip to see a group of common dolphin. After leaving our humpbacks, we headed towards the west end of Santa Cruz Island. More spouts were spotted! And they were taller and straighter than the bushy humpback blow. Then the silvery gleam of a big back reflected in the sun that was now out, and it was confirmed that we had blue whales to see! At first there were two blues, then a third, and then a fourth added to this group. They came quite close the boat a number of times, and sometimes spent a lot of surface time. They hung together quite closely. This was a great blue whale observation, including at least two blue whale tail flukes were seen. We then went towards another group, which turned out to be three blues. Oh, there were at least another pair of humpbacks pretty close by. Dall's porpoises accompanied our blue whales. They darted around in front of the blue whales, and would come by the bow of the boat when the blues were on a sound. We all got to see a Mola Mola at the surface, just hanging out. It was not a very big one. On the way back we passed what I was pretty sure were two Minkes separately, but we did not stop. It was a glorious day of whale watching! As a member of the Marine Mammal Stranding network, the Museum's vertebrate zoology staff and the other members of the necropsy team perform the same necropsy for every animal and allows the data to tell us what happened to the animals. At this point, this is what we know. * The four dolphins were all males (2 adults and 2 subadults). * Upon the team's arrival on Santa Rosa Island, all the dolphins were already deceased and did show some visible bruising, likely due to rolling in the surf. * The necropsies did not indicate a clear cause of death. Therefore, tissues and fluids from each dolphin were collected and sent to various laboratories for further analysis. The results of these tests are expected in a few months. The recovery team was taken by boat to Santa Rosa Island by Island Packers on Friday, May 22. The team necropsied one of the dolphins on the beach and carried the other three dolphins to the Island Packers boat. NOTE: These animals each weighed at least 200 pounds (or more). * Michelle Berman, Associate Curator of Vertebrate Zoology at the SB Museum of Natural History and Program Coordinator of the Marine Mammal Stranding Network * Dr. Krista Fahy, Associate Curator of Vertebrate Zoology at the SB Museum of Natural History * Laura Wilson, Curatorial Assistant at the SB Museum of Natural History * Sarah Wilkin, NOAA's National Marine fisheries Service The necropsy team met at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History on Saturday, May 23 and completed the remaining three necropsies. One of the Bm ended their presence with the biggest tail fluke ever leaving the?30 passengers totally awed. Capt Matt, Dennis and Jacques did their usual and Gary Delanoeye did a great job on the pics. The Bm activity and 2 Mn were all together at the west end of SCI. Very smooth water and 100% overcast sky. Have a great weekend! ?? ?EUGENE RADDING -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... For the Birds.. 12 Pigeon Guillemots 4 black Oystercatchers Tons of sooty shearwaters Gulls..Pelicans...Cormorants It was a cool and overcast morning and the sea gave us a smooth ride. Right away Captain Matt spotted 2 adult humpbacks with a calf. One of the adults was Rope..the humpback with the big rope scar behind its head. Along the with the three humpbacks was a group of common dolphins milling around nearby. One Minke also decided to join us briefly and then disappeared. The three humpbacks were very comfortable around us and showed off their tail flukes for us many times. After awhile with these whales, we left the area and headed towards the Islands. A short time later we came across another pair of humpbacks that we watched for awhile. We then headed towards Santa Cruz again. In between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa, we saw another pair of humpbacks and watched them for a little while before time grew short and we headed to the painted cave. On the way to painted cave, we saw more humpbacks in the distance but had no time to visit them. The cruise along the side of Santa Cruise towards the painted cave was marvelous as always...this is where we saw many birds and sea lions of course. The crowd of 54 passengers was very pleased at the end of the day. It was a wonderful trip with fellow naturalist Carole Rosales and Kevin Bailey on Photo ID. Galipeau Jr. announced today the availability of the Prisoners Harbor Coastal Wetland Restoration Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for public comment. The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing to restore a portion of the coastal wetland and associated stream channel at Prisoners Harbor on Santa Cruz Island. Prisoners Harbor, once the largest coastal wetland on the Channel Islands, was important for water retention and habitat for wildlife and native plants. Coastal wetlands in California are increasingly rare?over 90% have been eliminated. Methods to restore ecosystem function to this coastal floodplain wetland and the steam corridor are analyzed in the Draft EIS. The project extends over nearly 60 acres of land owned by the NPS and The Nature Conservancy. Restoration action is needed because prior modifications to the site degraded the ecology of the wetlands and stream corridor...
